So many missed. 1. The massacre at the 1972 Munich Olympics. 2. USA Gymastics abuse of athletes. 3. The Georgian luger who died during a practice run at the 2010 Vancouver games. Just to name a few...
Yeah, I'd put those in instead of the backflip skater. I mean I hadn't even heard of it. The massacre happened live on TV and was clearly worsened by being on TV; the gymnastics abuse has hurt a lot of athletes and will stain the sport for years (my opinion); anyone who dies at the Olympics should overshadow doping and relocating people. Those are things that come with the Olympics and should be quashed; every year there are rumours of doping and every year a city goes so nuts at the prestige of hosting that they consistently brush their problems under the rug.
You missed the Beijing 2022 Olympics doping scandal of a literal child and also the friction that happened during the women's single skating winner announcement.

My grandpa’s best friend competed in the 1936 Olympics. His name was Johnny Kelly and he was a famous marathon runner; there is a statue situated on the street that him and my Pa grew up on in Arlington, Massachusetts. Johnny won gold during the games, and he got to shake hands with Hitler himself. A few short years later my Grandpa’s name was called by the US Navy and he was sent overseas to fight the Nazis.
Johnny Kelley ended 18th in the Olympic Marathon 1936 - no other athlete from the US finished the race (1948 he finished at place 21). I cannot find him among the Olympic Champions
World champion and 17 other world class gymnasts fell / got injured on the vault. Then the Australian gymnast (the games are in Sydney Australia) noticed the vault was set two inches lower than it should have been. The gymnasts were offered a retry but most didn't take it, as they had either already caved to the increased stress of a totally failed vault and had poor performances on the other events, or because they had been injured. It basically removed half of the gymnasts from competition, including the then best in the world.
I remember surya bonaly's backflip and i agree with it being banned because it is to hard and dangerous for the young ladies to do it because you could hurt your ankles so much that you could kill your career in skating.
You can't make this stuff up. Fun fact: I read somewhere that when Margot Robbie first read the script for "I Tonya" she commented that it was great and was impressed by the plot twists and general writing of the story. She asked the scriptwriter how he/she came up with such a brilliant idea. Being from Australia and likely quite young, Margot had no clue that this was a real scandal that actually happened.
