"Here's a hard truth for your Monday lunch break"
Okay look I just came out to have a good time - on my Monday lunch break - and I feel called out yet truly seen.
-B
Hi Blue!!
Not who I was expecting to see here. cool to see, though.
I expect a 15 minute video on how Florence is depicted in modern video games by the end of the week, Blue!
Hope you had a good lunch regardless, man
Holy crap, I was watching OSP just before this video lol
I still can't believe the IGN person who made that gameplay trailer was looking out for us, Redfall forced us to apologize to IGN, TO IGN!
Wait what?
Nah fuck ign
@@veela the IGN review had the same look as the infamous Cuphead review, looking like the reviewer had no idea how to play an FPS. Turns out the controls for Redfall are terrible and the reviewer was just doing the best they could in a shifty game. The SkillUp review talks about it a little bit if you want more details
@@Zaxophone32 thank you. I'll look up said review.
Dumb question, but do you have the source/original video?
I love how you refer to Yahtzee as "the big guy"
He's what everybody's here for, they know that. We can enjoy their other content, but he drew in most of the initial crowd.
"Apologies without action are hollow."
Best line. I totally agree.
Frost ran out of gameplay footage after 3 minutes and couldn't be bothered to go back for more, that's about how my time in Redfall went as well.
I have become such a huge fan of Cold Take.
I’ve been in the game industry for 15 years and have been a part of a LOT of game development. I really appreciated both the grace you gave the actual devs and the reasoning behind it. You’re absolutely right; it happens that devs are given terrible ingredients and told they have to crunch and stress to make it work. Kind of like an Iron Chef whose secret ingredient is a tennis ball.
Then when the game is poorly received, gamers go after the devs that followed marching orders instead of the executives and project leads that told them to just put a little soy sauce on the tennis ball.
Your videos are great. ❤
Honestly every industry that can make people angry loves to trick people into lashing out at the workers, when that's pretty much never productive. Even if it's customer service and a specific worker genuinely acts like an asshole, nine times out of ten the reason is that they're either forced to by bad policy, untrained due to preventable turnover, or just stressed because their job sucks.
I’m borrowing that “tennis ball” analogy. Brilliant.
So should I thank executives for good games too? It's not like every Zenimax game has been a Redfall.
@@diegov1743 Executives have, and sometimes execute, the power to make a game worse, but they don't have the power to make a game better. Beyond choosing a decent idea to devote resources to, the best thing they can do is get out of the way and let the devs do their job.
@@stevenneiman1554 Yeah, that's why Kickstarter has earned such a high reputation as a way to get games done, because artists are very good at managing budget, scope and deadlines.
"Apologies without action are hollow" just summed up the AAA game industry right there
I could listen to this man talk for hours
I was thinking he should narrate hard boiled noir detective books.
@@peterscott2662YES, I absolutely agree.
@@peterscott2662 have him do ALL of Dashiell Hammett's books as well as Raymond Chandler (the 2 guys who invented Noir) and also the "The Shadow" novels. 😻🤩😻🤩
This is my first Cold Take and the hardened gum-shoe noir thing is absolutely amazing and makes the whole video essay resonate so much harder.
This rocks!
Recommend all of the other Cold Takes, all are wonderful pieces that force you to think (sometimes by their writing alone, honestly)
Even his ads are fun to watch. He got such a smooth voice and ernstness that its hard to not listen and watch what he makea.
After 12 or so hours of boring gameplay and excruciating performance issues and doing every quest on the map, when I finally killed the big boss in Redfall, I was relieved that this chore was over.
And then game switched to a new zone with a larger map. At that moment I felt like the joy was sucked out of my body by a figure I can't see.
10/10 - Redfall makes you FEEL like a Vampire Victim
You should put this review on metacritic,t's just perfect.
wait what? there is a bigger map? And i was happy with the amount it had at the start, if it stayed there it wouldnt be great game, but it would get into a good game that didnt overstay its welcome
The second map has a better hub, but who wants more after that slog of a first map? I had a few moments of fun here and there (the build up before the boss looks even like an Arkane game believe it or not!) but after the boss I was SOOO done
@@JulesNekro Oh I finished the game during launch week. The main quest for last two main bosses takes you to nice places but it's still so bland overall. Getting 3 skulls each for last 2 area bosses is just padding + the End boss was painfully disappointing.
I would love it for Arkane to take the fall, I've always hated their reboot of "Prey".
"unseasoned malware" is my new favourite way to describe the buggy mess that is the triple A games industry.
The call-out to the "big guy" was funny, but don't sell yourself short. At this point, I'm more excited to see a Cold Take than a ZP in my subscriptions. (And I really like ZP.)
Agreed. I go to Yahtzee for comedy, I come to Frost for thoughtful introspection. And to 3MRs for actual game reviews.
@@TheLordDracula Don't forget about EP! Also great stuff
My main thing about ZP is he's funny when ripping on bad games, but when he actually likes a game, that makes me take notice. Like maybe it's not by genre or something, but it's at least worth consideration. It's what got me to buy Mario + Rabbids: Sparks of Hope for example.
@@EmperorSeth my rule of thumb is that if the stuff hes making fun of in ZP doesnt make me think the game is bad then i'll probably like it but i always rent first anyways. Works everytime.
@@EmperorSeth Yahtzee makes funny over the top videos so I know if he doesn’t go too hard on something and it still sounds like I’ll like it by the end then I’ll probably like it, and if he actually praises something then it’s definitely worth checking out
I love the point toward action that worked in the past for a competitor company (to Microsoft). Just by showing your employees the executive's pay is secondary to the employees and the product seemingly motivated them. Need more of that in MS probably
A lot of that has to do with Japan-mass layoffs are a rarity for both legal and cultural reasons. When the 2008 recession hit, I was working for a company that was recently acquired from a Japanese company. The new CEO, who was from Japan, told us layoffs were an absolute last resort. True to his word, exec salaries were cut, hiring freezes were put into place, nobody got a raise (not even the standard 2-3% merit increase) for 2 years… hell, they stopped buying milk and plasticware in the break room. But in a company of over 1,000 employees nationwide, only 4 people were laid off. When the economy recovered, so did our perks. I had so many friends get laid off at other companies during that time, but mine made the effort to keep as many people as possible. As a result, turnover there was very low-nobody wanted to leave because we felt the company had our backs. That’s too rare a thing in business.
@@erakfishfishfish very much agree on this. i think it honestly goes all the way back to confucian values and buddhism, where the group and the on the ground folks are given a special value. i think the west sometimes gets carried away and forgets this.

Mr Iwata was the kind of CEO these Euro-American companies need 😒
He was the kind of CEO every company needs in regards to job security and accountability, at least.
And most Japan companies. Let's not pretend like Japan doesn't regularly abuse its employees.
You say that like Nintendo stayed fine after he left.
@@Hawkatanathey did, but for both good and bad reasons. I mean you're talking about a company that's been around for over 130 years, they'll be ok. 😅
@@Abel-Alvarez Notice how that's very clearly not what I meant by "fine".
Man this is the most grounded take I have heard on the Redfall drama. It's good to hear someone acknowledge that this is not necessarily a Microsoft exclusive problem, it is a AAA problem. It is plaguing the entire AAA industry. Redfall was only the latest in a long line of AAA flops, another nail in the coffin of public perception towards the industrial titans of game development.
I can not express enough the joy I have when a new cold take is uploaded.
Always on point. Keep it cold.
I dont understand why it is legal to lie about a game when you advertise it. I would like it if someone could explain that.
Cos they can put that “ *not final product ”crap at the bottom of the screen to clear away that liability
I just want to know why it's not as illegal to lie to customers as it is to lie to shareholders.
As someone who has only ever played mobile games (kill me) I am very interested to know this too! 😊
@@elalaela2694 always look for an astrisk or tiny print in the corner of the gameplay. Thats the disclaimer that says they are lying and makes it legal to lie.

Kinda makes me think of a quote from AngryJoe, think it was about Madden. "Every year they say they took a step in the right direction. They've taken dozens of steps in the 'right' direction, and still we're getting NOWHERE."
I still love your buttery voice but I also wanted to point out that I love your intelligent analytical takes and dry delivery. More plz
I've been listening to zero punctuation for years, and I can confidently say that frost has the smooooothest voice in reviews currently. Plus I love his view on things. Does Marty have his own series anywhere? As I find him immensely entertaining as well.
Seriously, frosts voice makes these entire videos sound like a video game intro. His voice is incredible
I'm so glad this series took off, I finally have another Escapist series worth checking for consistently besides ZP
This goes hand in hand with Yahtz' "The Pursuit of Realistic Graphics is Killing AAA." There's too much money spent on looking good, and it leaves too much room for technical fault. But that's because Johnny AAA is all about the money, he's got big bills to pay hiring all those artists and whatnot, and the only way to fish in that many people is sheer glamour. Otherwise, they gotta work for their following. So who's to blame for Redfall? The same thing responsible for most human tragedy since the dawn of time: greed itself. And I can see why Frost's list is all encompassing, we've all a little of that going on.
This is the first ep of this I've ever seen after coming to the channel for ZP and holy hell do I love this guy's video style and content!
Can't get enough of these. Well done.
Great episode as usual!
I need more of this in my life
I've waited too long to say so, so I'll say so now. Cold Take is brilliant. It's chilled-out but incisive, funny without being overbearing, interesting without being dense and comes from a place that I just don't consider. This episode's thrust, for instance, is to find worthwhile lessons in the kind of typical modern triple-A shite I ordinarily write off out of hand, despite the overall nothingness of the game as a whole. I wouldn't have ever considered that.
The Escapist actually feels like a proper crew these days, a real ensemble with multiple great contributors, rather than the "Yahtzee plus some filler" that it was ten years ago. So, top quality work. I love it. Unsurprisingly, Mr Ruiz's voice is a big plus. Keep it up!
This was brilliant, and it can definitely be applied to a lot of different media (movies, tv, etc.) and the content created.
Blame isn't what's needed, it's recognition and working to improve.
Your voice is SO perfect for Noir! we need you to do ALL of Dashiell Hammett's books as well as Raymond Chandler (the 2 guys who invented Noir) and also the "The Shadow" novels. 😻🤩😻🤩
Perfectly articulated response outlining one of the biggest concerns/issues I have with the AAA industry. You can't keep promising better, as there is always variance and a finite amount a project can achieve within given scope, then backing out with a limp apology and no real change.
One of the best decisions I made was to click on that 'Cold Take' recommended video that popped up on my feed a few months ago. I was thrown into a world of excellent criticism delivered by the coolest voice this side of the Rio Grande. Hats off, good sir -- and great video. :) (also Redfall was just the straw that broke the camel's back since Xbox hasn't had unquestionable, unanimously agreed upon WIN in some time... and people are getting tired of it ). >_
THE INTRO EASTER EGGS, WHERE ARE THEY?!?
This comment needs to be at the top so we can all find out!

I think an interesting point to be made about the comparison with Nintendo negotiating the difficult times of the Wii by cutting down the salaries of the higher-ups is exactly why the people mentioned in no. 5 and no. 6 are most definitely to blame for the state of Redfall. The corpos are to blame. Profit margins and line-must-always-go-up is to be blamed.
I love cold takes narrator. Feels like three dog meets spoken word and a glass of whiskey.
Well said.
It’s the classic Four Stage strategy.
Stage 1: Nothing is going to happen.
Stage 2: Something may be going to happen, but we should nothing about it.
Stage 3: Maybe we *should* do something about it, but there’s nothing we *can* do.
Stage 4: Maybe there was something we could’ve done, but it’s too late now.
All credit goes to Yes, Prime Minister for this unfortunately timely joke.
Don't pre-order games, no matter how good they may look. And don't focus your attention exclusively on the games with the biggest marketing budgets while other, truly creative and high quality games don't get the attention and praise they deserve.
Two simple rules that will keep you save from getting a lot of headaches ( and you most likely will make the gaming world more customer friendly in the long run ).
They'll not keep you safe, but they will reduce the 'danger' of wasting your time and money. Plus, the more that people do this and make it common practice, the more that companies will stop relying on such tactics to make their money. One thing I always want before I buy is a gameplay video. I don't care if it's from the devs (though I'd imagine they'd have the 'optimal' specs to make it play as good as they can), or if it's from some youtuber(s) on various platforms. If I can see that it plays well and that I'm not going to be feel drained by it, then I might consider actually buying the game.
I pre ordered Elden Ring and Cyberpunk. No regrets.
Fight me.
@@LuisSoto-fw3if No point in fighting you. You get the industry you deserve.
I genuinely don’t understand it. The fact that even the least polished titles make fat bank before/on release day because people HAVE to play it immediately has plagued the industry for years, but people keep doing it. Why? Literally what is the point of preordering a game? If you preorder, you get it online anyway,so there’s not even a chance of it being sold out when you get to the store.
@@LuisSoto-fw3if You pre ordered Cyberpunk? That's silly.
No hard feeling about Elden Ring, tho. From Soft has the decency to treat people like customers and not like consumers or beta testers.
While the blame for Redfall is probably the fault of many, I'll point my ire at Zenimax, who mismanaged their studios at every turn to chase trends, instituted unmeetable deadlines, and squeezed their fans for any penny they could. Yes, Zenimax hasn't really existed since 2021, but that means they were the ones overseeing Redfall for four out of its six year development cycle.
Zenimax does exist. Xbox pretty much left it alone after acquiring it. If you see Redfall as the latest Zenimax turd in a series including Fallout 76, Wolfenstein Youngblood, I think you can see why that was a foreseeable mistake.
I can we talk about the crappy launches that Dishonored 2 and Prey 2017 had? Those games needed more time.
Why not blame Arkane then ?
I would love it for Arkane to take the fall, I've always hated their reboot of "Prey".
@@w415800 Prey was fantastic. As were the Dishonored games. Arkane's problem is they think they have to prove that they can do something new and different. When really what people want is just for them to make more games like Dishonored and Prey.

Here for all these. And the voice.
Profound. Damn frost, I need to see more of you
Microsoft CEO only said what he said to placate people. He has no intention of fixing things until they get him into actual trouble.
My first Cold Take vid, been following escapist for years and I have got to say 10/10 voice, ended the video with a puddle in my chair 10/10 would buy a new chair again
Games like Redfall should be remembered as an embarrassing failure on all fronts of being a video game, and Deathloop should be remembered as being outrageously average for an industry declared "masterpiece", and we should all remember that Arkane, as a studio, has always been jerked around by publishers, and their projects get ruined because of them, Prey being the biggest sin of corporate intervention relating to the success of a video game.
I'm not that interested in blaming anyone, but more fascinated with what went wrong. I loved Prey, which I heard this particular team made. I'd like to see a behind the scenes of the development because it strikes me as weird how the game is bad, not just shocking that it's bad.
If I had to guess? Multiplayer. This team had zero experience with Multiplayer development, and underestimated the technical challenges that would entail.
@@alexlyster3459 That makes a ton of sense. Immersive sims don't mix with multiplayer, and if that's your strength, an open world multiplayer shooter is gonna be a challenge.
@@alexlyster3459 honestly the eso and fallout 76 devs should have made this game. Then have someone polish the gameplay and story since multiplayer was more important than story and gameplay for this kind of game
I know Yahtzee mentioned that devs FROM Prey had asked him why everyone seemed to forget it despite not having anything negative to say. I wonder if they were trying something new to make it more memorable, and fell on their face because they were out of their area of expertise.
I was really hype for this cause it was the Prey guys, but yeah. Multiplayer looter shooter with the interesting powers distributed across multiple characters kinda nullifies alotta that good Arkane juice. Ugh. I just hope they don’t end up taking the fall for this and get another chance to make something else more in their wheelhouse.
That is some quality commentary. Been playing games since windows 98 era and I've stopped hoping for or pre ordering any AAA games for a few years. Smaller indie titles are paving the way now.
Apologies without change are hollow, yeah. "Don't be sorry; be better."
First video I've ever done this on:
Support comment to feed the algorithm. Loved the vid.
The suits at Bethesda are most likely to blame directly, but ultimately this falls on Phil Spencer. Microsoft decided to purchase Zenimax after Youngblood and Fallout 76. Those were massive duds, and Microsoft should have done a better job of monitoring what was coming down the Bethesda pipeline. This game just wasn’t coming together and should have been rebooted into something else years ago.
Or better, simply canned. It's ok to toss a project. These companies are absolutely massive and can take the hit.
@@Beakerbite oh for sure, but some times assets and ideas can be retooled into something else. Recent controversies aside, Project Titan started as an MMO and turned it Overwatch, a pretty competent hero shooter.
Why blame the people supposed to "monitor" instead of the ones LITTERALY making the game : Arkane. Why is everyone doing their best to take the blame off Arkane ? THEY MADE THE GAME. They are the first responsible.
@@vee1766 I feel like you’ve never had a job before. You go in, you do your assigned task the best you can, and you go home. The development team was given direction from above and followed it. They very likely saw the pieces weren’t coming together, and probably even spoke up, but if management doesn’t take their foot off the gas there’s nothing they can do.
@@vee1766as frost said,a developer most likely wont spend years and years working on an absolute dumpster fire when it’s obvious. Like with many films,it’s more often than not studio meddling that ruins a vision
Calling Redfall "average" is criminal tbh...
Some people are generous.
Its definitionally correct, thousands of games are released daily, the overwhelming majority of which being so dysfunctional you literally never hear about them. The game is bad, its also average
@@xXEGPXx Yea but there's also thousands of games released that ARE functional and serviceable. WAAAAY more than this game. This is FOR SURE below average even considering the vast amount of crap out there.
@@PirateZ1 So there are thousands of games released that are worse than this and thousands of games released that are better than this. That is what you just agreed to.
Sounds like this game falls in the middle and is average.
-average- more like bland
Well to be fair if you didn't see Redfall being a flop from the awful trailers, the lack of 60 fps mode on console, the beefy pc min requirements and the poor gameplay showcases then your partly to blame for buying it. Always look for the red flags before you buy a game.
As the old saying goes, a sucker is born every minute. For every person that wises up and stops falling for the hype and the promises that it’ll be better this time, there will always be at least one new person to replace them and continue enabling the cycle.
Just noticed the guy talking here is the one I used to watch for all my smite adc tips and now i'm intrigued
Really well-written and performed. Arkane has a lot of great people and serious talent. There were a bunch of weird falling dominos that led to this, and they're still going to go on to make great games.
Your pace of speaking and tone of voice reminds me of Nick Valentine - I love it xD
Woah steve buscemi out here catching strays
The sad part too is that Xbox and Arkane were up front about this game being in development before the acquisition, which does put a little more attention on the devs, and Zenimax is getting out as the invisible third party that is also the most likely catalyst. Did Arkane try to do something new for them and miss the mark? Possibly. Did Xbox just wave its hand and assume everything was fine? Evidently. But nobody is calling out Zenimax here, because the "console wars" that dont exist anymore necessitate that this be Xbox's fault for the narrative
It's an interesting take you have on consumers. I agree it doesn't absolve misleading marketing and the hype train that leaves the station with every new game. I do think however, that anyone who pre-orders a game 2023 is just leaving themselves open to being hurt. I stopped pre-ordering games around 4 years ago because I realized you just couldn't trust early reviews except from a few sources. It's not great, but the best way to tell if a game is good is to go on Metacritic 2-3 months after launch to see where the user score sits. That to me is the most unbiased metric.
I honestly think the real answer is to WAIT to buy any game and see how it shakes out. Remember when we could rent a video game? Well, you can't anymore. Remember demos? Increasingly rare. The last I played was the FFVII: Remake demo, which was awesome and so was the final game. I also played the Outriders demo, liked it, and then bought the game. (Come to think of it, both of those are SQENIX games). If you cannot actually play the game for yourself and see for yourself, then how do you know what you're getting? You don't, so you trust reviews and marketing, but ultimately it's your money at risk, so better to just wait.
From the first trailer Redfall looked bland as hell. And from comments I’ve read, most people recognized that. If it wasn’t made by Archane nobody would be surprised that it turned out so bad. The game was riding on developer expectation the whole way.
Why are people pretending to be surprised, Arkane already made a shitty game, it's called Deathloop.
@@vee1766 allot of people liked that game. I mean, I didn’t, but it wasn’t universally panned like RedFall

Love me some Cold Take
I wish that there weren't so many points of failure for big games like Redfall, but I love how you point out all of the points that create the storm of terrible gaming trends in the modern world of gaming.
Personally, I'm partial to the effect that Corporate Greed has had on AAA games and how they come out incomplete with stuff getting pushed as day 1 patches or DLC.
I'm also not a fan of pre-ordering games unless I know the quality will be there, either because of Alpha/Beta testing or, in FFXIV's case, it's on top of existing, maintained content. With how games can change so much from release to release, I don't want to put my faith in something like a Pokémon game where I enjoyed X/Y, but couldn't like Sword/Shield. At least with Diablo IV, I get to test out whether or not it'd be worth my time to play and that led me to pre-order.
Personally, I blame Escapist movie critic, Darren Mooney, for Redfall.
He's history's greatest monster!
This is amazingly poignant commentary and I appreciate it.
Steve Buscemi isnt ugly! He's just kinda funny lookin'...
Dontcha know!
'but I'll let the big guy tell you ask about that'
Now I'm looking forward for an upcoming Zero Punctuation 😆
This man could read me the dictionary and I would be completely engrossed and unable to focus on anything else.
Honestly, Redfall is such an interesting story. I want to know what went wrong with this game the same way I liked hearing about ET, Two Worlds, Too Human and that kind of stuff ..... Bad games like that always have interesting stories.
It's actually a relief that this game flopped. I was hype about it since the first few trailers released, but I don't actually have enough time to play another multiplayer looter shooter.
My level of "Deal" with a game's jank and quality is inversely proportionate to it's price tag. I am infinitely more calm with a £15 game than I am with a £60 game. It is Wallet's Law in action.
Preorders will never not be the number 1 cause. Why put up a functionning product when you've already cashed in before release and you have to appease the shareholders with more money than last quarter, which decides the release date more than the state of the game ?
And I don't think it's Johnny casual who buys 2.5 games a year that will preorder the most...
I like this guy's voice
Is the intro a reference to John Carpenter's The Thing?
Great video! I heard big promises from MS since the great 360 times. And it were mostly empty ones. I had a little hope with Phil Spencer but he is more that friendly car seller than someone who tries to fullfill the promises. He said he hates to disappoint the community but already after Halo I think he should really get used to it.
What are the intro easter eggs?
God bless Iwata's soul
I need a drink now that the guitar riff intro is missing.
I heard about Redfall but never had any expectations. Had to find out what it was expected to be while checking out what's wrong with it. I guess because I'm a PlayStation owner not XBOX.
From what i understand 'Redfall' was a project that was grandfathered into Microsoft Game Studios when they acquired Arkane studios, as it was already far enough along in development to be made a condition of the buyout by Arkane. After the acquisition a bunch of internal dev drama happened, devs were fired, new devs were brought on, and the game was eventually pushed out by Microsoft in the current state due to the fact that it was on its way to becoming a money pit, an they just didnt wana deal with it anymore.
The timeline doesn't add up, the dev exodus and probable hire happened some short time before the acquisition went fully through, and far as reporting on this has shown, all MS mandated was that it would be exclusive but didn't peer into what the company was doing to the lament of at least one dev where they wanted Xbox to scrap the game
You almost sound like Ian McShane in Deadwood!
Very well said, as always
Ahhh, good ol' Johnny Triple-A... When will we learn?
The cunning secret strategy I use is that I just don’t buy brand new games. I’m a genius, I know ;-p
"4/10 milk it for a few compilations on social media before moving on kinda game" is probably the most depressing way to describe a game, holy crap!
Was there a conclusion in this video? It felt like it just stopped.
eh, the trailers for this game already showed me everything I needed to see from it
Yes but why no one cites the facts that nowadays Arkane has had a 95% turnover rate from the Arkane that gave us Dishonored 1? And 75-50% from D2 and Prey? Why no ever discusses how these companies are left as just names? Shells of their former selfs.
