    Since changing to eating mostly meat and fruit, my training has been great and I've felt great overall, got leaner and consistently getting stronger. And the best part is it's like having desert with every meal and my only real craving is for more fruit but it's incredibly easy to autoregulate consumption because it's actually filling. After a certain point of reading research on phytonutrients, my opionion is that there's really no good excuse to not eat fruit.

    Without calorie surplus fructose is converted into glucose in liver (and to lactate in splanchnic organs during exercise) and is immediately used as energy source or stored as liver glycogen. It is also very difficult to overeat and unlikely to cause chronic overeating behaviors when consumed from natural sources. All I see is benefits, not threats.

    • @Seanonyoutube
      @Seanonyoutube Před 2 lety

      Not sure I fully agree. I noticed with myself that after eating a whole mango, I get a major dip in energy which is accompanied with a feeling like I need to “rescue” my energy levels by eating more. This does not happen with smaller amounts or lower sugar fruit like berries.

    • @michwoz
      @michwoz Před 2 lety +1

      @@Seanonyoutube Maybe this is how your body responds to certain fruits. Mango ratio of sucrose/glucose to fructose is 2.8:1. For blackberries it's close to 1:1.2. Blackberries have more fructose... Another thing, blackberries have a lot more fiber (5x more). Of course, the total quantity of calories and glycemic load matter too.

    • @Seanonyoutube
      @Seanonyoutube Před 2 lety

      @@michwoz with the actual amounts I was describing above (a whole mango at once vs a small handful of berries) I was in practice getting about 30g of fructose from the mango vs about 5g from the berries. There is a temporary drop in ATP after eating >5g of fructose due to the way in which fructose is metabolized, and it’s a dose dependent effect. You can learn about it on Peter Attia’s recent interview with Rick Johnson (titled “how fructose drives metabolic disease) where they go over the mechanism in depth.

    I’ll give him a couple of points:
    - The apples I buy at the store are huge, about 2 USDA servings (250+ grams vs. 138g). That’s why you weigh stuff. But also in his childhood reminiscence he’s picturing what we call “lunchbox” apples, which you can still buy.
    - Fruit juice isn’t nearly as healthy as whole fruit.
    - Chain store smoothies are often loaded with added sugar.
    The simple-but-not-always-easy solution to all of these: don’t just eat mindlessly. Read labels and make conscious choices.

    Layne you need to hammer this point away more often. People say fructose can only be stored in liver glycogen, and you mentioned that while this is true nevertheless liver glycogen can be released to be used in muscle and/or for muscle glycogen. But I think it is even more than that: fructose can be *directly* converted to glucose, in fact most of it is, and indeed, when the liver is full, all remaining excess fructose is converted to glucose and sent to muscle.

      You're correct. There are MULTIPLE pathways by which fructose can eventually yield muscle glycogen. It can be converted to muscle glycogen via: glucose, alanine, aspartate, lactic acid, and a few other non-essential amino acids.

    There's so much bullshit out there. It's a relief to see someone, who actually knows what he's talking about, calling it out.

    Hey Doc, would you consider honey "okay"? Should I be worried about a higher fructose content? lol

    You should do some type of video with Greg Doucette. You seem to agree on almost everything when it comes to dieting.

    I grew up on a farm and he is right about the size. But most fruits and veggies are altered.

    Sadly, while a great surgeon, Gundry is a nutrition quack. Whole fruit is mostly water in a solid cellular fiber rich matrix. Sugar is a small fraction of fruit vs the fullness you get per bite. And per calorie, most fruit has high fiber. Even low fiber fruit, like grapes, are still mostly water (300 cal per pound of food) and high in vascular friendly, blood pressure lowering potassium. Don’t pay attention to Gundry. Pay attention to Layne.
