Lovely work on the Bachman, turning a toy into a model locomotive, half scratch built. Really great job on the paint, electrics, lighting effects and the operation was the best I've ever seen from a Bachman American. The ankle walkway was an excellent touch and I don't recall ever seeing that on a General replica or model locomotive. Even the one in Kennesaw Museum has the Wm.Mason Disney movie look and trim with one steam dome (unless it was reworked recently) In the 70s synd 90s I used to do this with Mantua General kits and Rivorassi Inyos and Genoas to build the stock at the B&O Martinsburg shop photo in 1860. Replacing pilots, pilot wheels, new exhaust, real wood loads, cab details where possible with that drivebar, and brass elements. I have moved to Fort Mountain near Dalton, Ringold Gap. I have considered building a W&A layout here... And doing the modern 2019 TVRR Steam Excursion line in a diorama shelf layout below it... Same run past Rock Spring, GA as a 150 year before/after I'll bookmark this video. Thanks for sharing.
The really small locomotives are the real challenge! Great video!! Adding enough weight to get reliable electrical contact is so important - it's one thing to make 'em look great, but if they ALSO run great then you know it's a really well done loco! I'm going to have to watch this video a few more times!

This is the best overhaul how-to video I've ever seen. We viewers don't always think about how much advance thought and planning needs to happen before the camera gets turned on. Sometimes too, the presenter seems as though they're just rambling along without having outlined their talking points before recording starts. Not this time. This was immensely well planned beforehand, and for that many thanks. That's in addition to how much sensible and logical information we're given. The upshot is that next time I'm looking at my old, original-as-manufactured General loco, I won't be terrified to think about working on it, or any of my other old 4-4-0s. Bravo you!!

Wow, finally a video showing how to take apart these Bachmann 4-4-0’s rather than screwing up the model by experimenting in the blind. This video shows how to customize these models with add-on parts and how to paint them in pieces. You would think Bachmann would provide a link to this video. I wish there others making these 1860 early 4-4-0’s but Bachmann is now the only option.

I have done some 4-4-0 the way Southern railway had in , 1880. Southern did not retired the 4-4-0 until 1920. I helped move the Texas 4-4-0 tender at NCTM before they worked on the locomotive. The information was found by NCTM about the General and the Texas titles and true facts found

The American 4-4-0 is my favorite locomotive type, and so I love that Bachmann made these guys. I grew up in Nevada, so the Virginia and Truckee has always been my favorite rail line. I picked up a AT&SF engine and repainted her into V&T #11, the Reno. This video helped me out with how to go about doing more rebuilds down the road. Someday I want an 1880's-1890's V&T layout. We really need some 2-6-0 moguls from the same period, too.

Ken, I've been looking for those tender trucks that you have on the General. Are yours made of metal ? I have a plastic pair for a Bowker that I want to replace with something like what you have. This is a fantastic tutorial. Please tell me the name that is used to refer to these trucks.
Only problem I have with using the Bachman American for modifications is that the drivers are too small and not close enough together, If George makes a model of Yonah I hope he finds a way to move the front driver back till it almost touches the rear, otherwise these models are great!
The real Texas still has her link and pin. I personally touch them on locomotive. I am from the South Carolina and have seen both of the real 4-4-0 from the great locomotive chase. Plus our state museum has two railroad layouts behind the Best Friend of Charleston.
I’ve yet to see the Texas. But, it’s on the list! These locos are fantastic and it’s amazing they were preserved and restored. Would love to see the General run again!
I haven’t looked, but I know there are detail parts in HO and N. But at some point, some of these may be too small, but spend some time looking. Start with the brass parts MFGs, such as Precision Scale and Cal Scale, then look at 3D printing. Good luck! Thanks for watching!

I did spend many hours sitting at the workbench trial and error, figuring it out, etc. I worked on this for about 4 months. (Spending hours here and there.). Not necessarily. It honestly ended up shorter because I had cut the side ankle rails already and didn’t have another piece of angle brass.. 🙄. But, it worked out as it put the weight a tad back.. thanks for watching!

Texas does not have red wheels, NCTM only found black paint all the way to the metal of the wheels.
