Is This Character A Joke?? | Anti-Lad Is A Bit Awkward

  • DC Comic's Legion of Superheroes were a team hailing from the future with a large cast of characters including Superboy and Supergirl. However the team was also known for rejecting applicants, sometimes they would form their own team for them, like the Legion of Substitute Heroes. Sometimes rejected Legion hopefuls would become super villains, and sometimes you would have strange cases like the tale of Anti-Lad. Coming from the Bronze Age and the early transfer period between artists Dave Cockrum and Mike Grell would come a tale with a character who I may need to censor. Was his design on purpose, and what was his story? Learn all about Anti-Lad here on Casually Comics!

    Maybe the idea's that Anti-Lad's meddling caused Superboy to fail the intiation tests for real, but then Anti-Lad convinced the Legion they needed to have Superboy join anyway, so they made up all that stuff about purposely sabotaging the tests as a hazing ritual ... but once they've done that, now EVERY new inductee has to be brutally hazed, and thus a horrific ritual was born.

    Carey Bates isn't the most fondly remembered Legion writer for multiple reason, his bad grasp of canon by far not the worst reason (hi Tyroc).
    Later Legion stories actually establish that Supergirl and Brainy did in fact join before Superboy - the Legion was too nervous to directly go to their idol and had to have practice run first. In later reprints of Adventure #247, some background characters are even recolored to look like actual Legionnaires, including Brainy. The chronology during the original backup era is convoluted, and not just because it involves time travel (hi Silver Age DC editors)

      Canon is exhausting.

    • @emsleywyatt3400
      @emsleywyatt3400 Před rokem +5

      Yeah. I've even speculated that Superboy and Star Boy each had already met the other when they met for the "first" time, due to time travel. (Star Boy introduces himself to Superboy as a new Legionnaire while visiting the 20th century, but when Star Boy joined, Superboy was already there). Big joke on each other.

      There was no retcon, however, that could save Tuska's flashback panel in Superboy 173, depicting Matter-Eater Lad, Light Lass and Mon-El all present at Superboy's swearing-in. All three definitively joined after the Boy of Steel -- with Ayla coming on board as Lightning Lass.

    Yes, I remember Anti-Lad and his interestingly-shaped head. What concerns me about him and other super-future characters (the Green Lantern series sometimes visited the 57th century or something crazy like that) is where did those futures come from (or go) with all the rebooting the DC universe has endured? I don't even know anymore how many distinct versions of the Legion there's been now, at least four (and counting?).

    • @Solitaire001
      @Solitaire001 Před rokem +1

      At last count there are seven. They are:
      - Version 1 (V1): The original. This version ended shortly after the Five-Year Gap.
      - Version 2 (V2): This version succeeded V1. Similar to V1 but reflected the changes due to "Crisis on Infinite Earths" (COIE). Came to an end with "Zero Hour".
      Version 3: This featured split-timelime teenaged duplicates of the Legion members. Were known as Legionnares. In conjunction with "Zero Hour" this version fused with V2 and were deleted from History.
      Version 4 (V4): Introduced after "Zero Hour". This was a new version of the LSH that started from scratch.
      Version 5: This was another version of the LSH that superceded V5. Known as the Threeboot, it turned out that this was the LSH from Earth-Prime, the same Earth as Superboy-Prime.
      Version 6: This was a version of the LSH similar to V1 but COIE never happened. Due to this, the characters are much older.
      Version 7: This version came out of "Doomsday Clock" and is a complete reboot of the LSH. As far as I know this is the current version.

    Mike Grell is my FAVORITE Legion and Comic book artist! My deep respect to the late great Dave Cockrum, but it was Mike Grell art that got me into comics and the legion (my first issue was #203) And he's a better writer than artist (Warlord, StarSlayer, Jon Sable and Green arrow: long Bow Hunter) and this was a great issue for us bronze age babies! Long Live ANTI -LAD! Seriously, I was always hoping as a kid that they woudl bring him back.

  • @stile8686
    @stile8686 Před rokem +8

    I liked both Cockrum and Grell. Cockrum deserves the credit for his artistic revamp of the Legion but Grell was a more than competent artist to follow. The one thing that often stood out to me about Grell's art though was his penchant for the "spread-thighs" heroic stance. As he became further removed from Cockrum (Grell was inking Cockrum before he left) these spread-leg stances appear more often. I can't understand why this is a thing in the 30th Century. They look actively painful. Maybe you could do a show on them?

    I don't think the "inaccuracies" mattered back then. Look at those original Legion costumes (Cosmic Boy in a helmet, Saturn Girl in yellow, etc.) I'd say they were "retconning" the old ("dated") elements, albeit temporarily. As for the girl with the "big S," look at the panel you chose and the insignia on her cape. Pretty darn big!
    Cockrum would be my favorite Legion artist, with Grell a close second. Cockrum had a tough time getting good inkers compatible with his style, while Grell had better luck (except for the many times he was inked by Colletta).

    I like Cockrum better, partly because his changes in design were so sharp and dynamic. Of course, he was only the Legion artist for a brief time so you get the feeling that you missed his true greatness.

    I was amused how the Legion would use technicalities to get around their admission bylaws. Each member was required to have a UNIQUE super-power…so what about having Superboy, Supergirl AND Mon-El on the team? Well, Kal-El and Kara Zor-El lived in the 20th Century, so were technically part-time, RESERVE members.
    And Ultra Boy’s powers (seemingly identical to Mon-el’s -but limited to only ONE power at a time)? Well, Ultra Boy’s X-Ray vision (excuse me, “Ultra-Vision”) could see through ANYTHING--including lead.
    The later Legionnaire “Blok”? Just another invulnerable, super-strength character…EXCEPT for his virtually never-used ability to absorb (and then discharge) energy attacks used against him.
    And Timber Wolf? Super-strength, reflexes, etc…but not nearly at Mon-El’s level. Still, Timber Wolf (originally “Lone Wolf”) was admitted into the team because…well…er…
    He was just REALLY COOL, okay?

    You should do the story of Grimsbor the Chainsman, a legion foe from Superboy 221, and his partner Charma. Classic Mike Grell art on that one too. Ah, Charma! Wonderful gal, Charma, was. She had the power to charm any man but had the big weakness that any woman would hate her and try to kill her.
    Once captured, she was sent to an all women's prison where, surprise surprise, she was killed be either the female guards or prisoners.
    Great Mike Grell art though.

    The final test being how someone handles rejection feels like how Batman would determine who should join the Justice League. AND I totally buy he could convince the others, even Superman, to allow that as the final test. However, Superman and probably Black Canary (at least the Young Justice version) would probably push for, "Well, if they fail to join the JLA, but otherwise qualify, surely they should be recommended to join the Teen Titans or something for a couple years until they're ready to try again?" And I would love to see that be a recurring thing in DC comics going forward. Despite all reboots and everything, always have Batman give THAT final test, and then them either passing, by responding like Superman would, or be recommended for a "junior team" like Teen Titans.

    Dave Cockrum was okay, but I was never a big fan of his artwork. Mike Grell, though, I really liked. Even in his early days of questionable proportions and rubber limbs. And everybody's holding in their stomachs! The real shame was that Grell rarely inked his own pencils, but when he did, it was that much better. I really liked the early issues of Warlord because you can see Grell's artwork improve every issue, plus he had a lot of story to tell in those early issues. I must admit I never cared much for Grell on Batman, but then, I'm pretty picky when it comes to Batman art.
    As for Cosmic Boy's newer costume, yeah, I noticed how similar it was to his previous costume, but I really think they should have just changed the pink to a different color instead of exposed skin. But 30th century moral standards or what ever. Cos was probably popular at parties.

    I think Anti-Lad should have been named Phallic Lad. I like both Mike Grell and Dave Cockrum's art on Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes. Did you know that when Dave Cockrum left Superboy and the Legion of Superheroes he took two characters over to Marvel Comics All-New, All-Different Uncanny X-Men? Originally, supposed to be Legionnaires was Nightcrawler and Storm. That would have changed comic book history.
