BJJ Blue Belt Asks “Is 30 Too Old for a 1st MMA Fight?”

- čas přidán 8. 02. 2024
- Today's video concerns a BJJ Blue Belt who's interested in having an MMA fight at the age of 30 years old.
He has no delusions of being a UFC champion, he just wants to test himself in the ring and see what he and his skills are made of.
So he sends in the question asking about my thoughts on him getting into his very first MMA fight at an older age (for fighting anyway) and any tips associated with it.
So I share some ideas from the students in my gym who have done this very thing and I share an idea on how to figure out if MMA fighting is going to be right for him.
Enjoy the video and thanks for watching.

If you’d ever like to train with the team and I. Check out my gym Derby City MMA in Louisville,KY. - Sport
I’m a 30 year old blue belt who started training 3.5 years ago and just had my first 2 fights in a 7 week span, won both of them. I don’t plan on going pro or making a career out of it, but I’m living proof that it’s never too late to start and come out swinging! I’ve never felt better. Lifting, mat time, nutrition, hydration, sleep, etc if those are all on point you should be confident stepping into that cage. 💪🏼
30 is young
Congrats, and that’s awesome.
Also, “it’s never too late” when you started in your 20’s is pretty funny. You’re young af
@@danielz8925 relative to people who start later in life like 50’s + for sure! But “older” in the sense that it’s way harder to get into MMA competition on a high level not starting earlier in life. Like most UFC people have been training for a decade plus or even started when they were kids
I was 43 and my opponent was 25 when I had my one and only very amateur MMA match. I lost on points, I moved like a deer in the headlights, but we won fight of the night. It was an unbelievable experience. 30 is prime, not old. Do IT!!! You will be matched up, as opposed to being lead to slaughter.
Midlife crisis? 30 is too young for a mid-life crisis! I'm almost 54 and just started BJJ 6 months ago. Never played a contact sport, never wrestled, never had any combat sports training. That's a midlife crisis. I'm still at it. The strength and fitness gains have been pretty amazing. I'll never be a competitive BJJ practitioner, but I'm having a blast.
Congrats on startig BJJ! It's never too late! Health benefits, it's fun, good for the body and mind! Keep it up bro! ❤🙌👊
congrats on the baby!
Great answer brother! At 60, the pandemic had started and there were no BJJ tourneys to get into, but I found out there was a Streetbeefs Branch (Streetbeefs Scrapyard) in WA. I got a lot of the same. Even though I Kickboxed in the 80, had been coaching boxing for nearly 30 years at that point, was a purple belt in BJJ, had mostly gold medals even though I was always bumped down in age and sometimes up in weight class, and had been training in an MMA gym for several years. My opponent out weighed me by nearly 20lbs, was 6'3" and 20 years old. I won in the 1st round and it was posted on CZcams (Anomaly vs Rabbit).
Oh, and congratulations on the baby!
Anomaly I thought of you when I saw this video, I never thought you would comment on it lmao. Whenever I doubt myself because of age I think back to that Streetbeefs match, God bless you sir
@@DavidPerez-mr3cs Thanks so much for your kind words. All the best!
Congrats on the baby! My wife and I are expecting our little one in March, been trying to get as much time on the mats as possible before then!
"I'm ready for an MMA fight bro" - The most master's age blue belt thing ever said
Im about to be 35. I've been training consistently since i was 30. Just had my first muay thai fight and won every round. Got my next one in about 6 weeks. Gonna have my first mma fight 2 months after that. Gonna try to compete as frequently as possible moving forward. Gonna have a few amateur fights and plan on going pro before I turn 36. Win or lose, I'm gonna keep training, keep getting better, keep fighting, and keep trying. To me, it doesn't really matter if i win or lose. To me, it just matters that i try. I would rather try and fail than live with myself knowing that i could have, but i never did. Bernard hopkins won a boxing world title when he was 46. He also fought into his 50s. George forman won a world title when he was 45 and 10 months. Glover Teixeira won the ufc light heavyweight championship at 42. What one man can do, another can do! What one man can do, another can do! What one man can do, another can do!
Wooooooo!! Congrats on the little one Chewy that's so awesome!
Congratulations!
Congrats Chewy! 🙌
Congrats to you Chewy and Mrs. Chewy! And thank you for the props
I'm 39 and have won two amateur titles in the last two years. I'm also not delusional, not planning to go pro much less believe I'm going to fight at a higher level. But you can do it. It's worth doing for the experience.
That said, I had a striking background before I started Jiu Jitsu.
Go for it man , I'm originally from IN and I'm also 30 and wanna fight , I haven't started training , but hopefully soon will both have are fight , good luck man !
Wow! The props to the parents shoutout hit me more than I thought it would. Never realised I needed to hear that, it’s just always been what I’ve known. Cheers chewy!!
Indeed! iv got a 3 and 2 year old, still manage to get about 3-4 sessions a week simply cause my job lets me take extended lunch breaks and I work from home. otherwise i could train about 1 evening a week.
Nice one bro. Keep up the good work.
Congratulations dude!
Hey Chewy, congrats to you and Jess! I've been doing this BJJ thing for 3.5 yrs while working full time and having 3 kids. It makes the mat time that much more enjoyable :-)
Great Video, Keep it up!
Congratulations on the baby Chewy. I think that being 30 years old and wanting to fight is ok. Just as long as you have some good training in striking. When I took part in MMA classes having Muay Thai and BJJ coming together was so much fun. I'm 45 years young and wish I could do what you want to do when I was 30. Good luck!
Congratulations!!!!
congratulations coach
Great advice, Coach!
As a 30-year-old, focus on good sports nutrition, proper hydration, and high-quality sleep.
Appropriate, reasonable training load, followed by appropriate recovery.
In general, keep your expectations reasonable at 30 years old.
Good luck!
Nikolas
Congrats on your new wookie. And definitely props to all the parents. It ain’t easy
congrats on new baby dawg!
I had my first fight when I was 33. Maintaining discipline with all aspects of training and recovering can be hard, but it’s so worth it.
Hi chewy,
Our gym professor is away a lot when training and I feel like I don’t Always learn new submissions because I end up in the same scenarios a lot because of a lack of rolling partners. I still feel like I am improving in the areas I get stuck in. My question mainly is can you continue to improve when just doing open mat?
I've been in BJJ for 13 years and during 9 of those years I was training in the MMA route, so multiple classes a day in Thai, Boxing, and BJJ (young and dumb with all the energy). Joined just cause I wanted to learn to defend myself. Got decent and quite a few people even asked me if i wanted to fight, that urge was beaten out of me cause quite a few times because the MMA community is all about networking. Ammies and Pros getting ready for fights would come in the gym cause they would know my coaches and would get some training sessions in with them. I would get matched up with these fighters to spar to give them a look and i would be close to there size. These were the times I had self realization via dealing with the pain they would inflict on me while still taking my best shots. Out of the ring, GREAT GUYS, but they ARE just a different breed of mentality. So spar some with regular fighters and see how you like it, plus talk to them to get a perspective cause they are real people too who deal with day to day balancing. A 8-10 week fight camp can be rough when balancing it with family and finances.
32 and looking to make my MMA debut in November or December. My reason for doing it is honestly for fun. I enjoy the sport, i love my team, and i want that experience. I'm not looking to try and obtain a local championship, i just wanna glove up.
Congratulations on your child! It's a big adjustment and finding mat time afterward requires a lot of scheduling (for me, probably a little easier for you haha)
Probably easier for me since it's my job and I've got an an awesome wife at home.
yo NICK! isn't there a difference between knowing how to execute strikes vs defending and dealing with someone striking you? Isn't defending yourself from strikes also fundamental jiu jitsu? Manage the distance, manage the damage.
do you think you need to learn and train how to strike in order to be successful in a MMA fight?
THANKS BRUTHA :)
Good question. I’ll save for a video.
First time hearing about the baby, congrats! Trying to keep training with a newborn is not easy.
im 32 and yeah i feel its too old to be good at the art and maximize your potential. i dont do bjj or martial arts but i like watch videos like these covering them. im too much of a soyboy nerd thats afraid to get hurt but i love to study martial arts as it feeds my nerdy brain. props to you guys that can actually do this.
I was literally thinking to myself how to tell the people in my life I decided after almost a year of training, I want to dedicate my life to martial arts instead of pursuing growing my career in my current job, I want to stay in the same schedule I have but focus instead in becoming a black belt or mma fighter and one day have my own dojo, when I saw this video. If this ever happens i swear I’ll have your picture in a wall someday
Congrats for the new kid
the time is now my friend
Its rough man but im 35 hitting up 3 to 5 classes a week with 2 kids that both train in separate classes 3 days a week...i feel like im there more than the coaches lol
Ahhh the age issue... I've always hated this limitation, I myself still can't get over it.😅
I had my first mma fight at 33. Won by tko in 28seconds. Got my bkue belt not long after and was up against a younger fighter. It can be done. Go hard.
I’m 39, training mma for 6 years and looking for my first amateur fight too.
I had my first and only smoker at 17. I beat the guy up pretty bad, relying on my submissions and my kicks most of the fight. I was lucky the other guy was also a newbie and way more nervous than I was so when he threw the first jab and the fight was on I quickly started dictating the pace. Took him down end over round 1, he was already gassed out. Start of round 2 I took him down again, armbar, he scrambled, got a grip around his neck and choked him out. As soon as the adrenaline wore off, and I saw the guy laying on the floor with a little bit of blood coming from his mouth I was like "I don't think this is for me."
I was 37 years old my first mma fight. Fought for a couple of years. Went 4-0 in mma 2-2 in boxing & 1-1 in kickboxing. If you have to know, go for it I say
Congrats chewy on parenthood 🎉
So what is the oldest to go professional?
Randy Couture started at 33.
So what I'm hearing is, As a 52yr old Blue Belt that has never done striking, I should definitely get in a cage. Chewy promised I won't get hurt. Rodger Dodger, gunna tell the MRS tonight.
Pat militech just fought at 57 and was winning fight till he gassed out , it's possible
As a fellow 52 year old blue belt I say rip it up 😂😂
😂Dammit Peterson . . .
Why not get a miata and do amateur fighting? 😮
Congratulations with your new born baby
Well if you can complete a 12 week fight camp without wanting to quit then hell yeah! I lasted 6 ish weeks of conditioning before i realize that lifes not for me
Why not? People should live their lives
the best is the guy that goes “ I feel bro I have a dog”
My purple belt wife had 3 last year. She's 36. She won 2 of them.
“My wife and I brought home an infant recently…”
Well, have you thought about taking it back?
Miata and bjj 😊
If he’s been training 3 years he might do surpassingly well. Jump in and try it.
30 is midlife crisis. I thought we were regressing with age. Now 30 is the new 40?
dad gang!
Age is just a number
A number that represents real physiological changes in the body as it grows older.
Fuck no I wanna fight before 35 just one time not gonna be a world champion
'Promo sm'
fk the shedule be the dad.
Of course! Being a dad is the most important part. But we still have to maintain a schedule to make sure we can provide for our family.
@@Chewjitsu sorry my response was blunt and unhelpful. It was more ment to be, people will understand, delegate as much as you can, type thing.
@@DefconUnicorn I appreciate the clarification. Also to be fair, some people need a blunt response like that.
I had an mma fight at 46 with a guy twenty years younger than me, after 6 months of grappling and striking experience. God damn it was fun.
Oh and I won to boot 😂😂
People don't really lose much of their athletic ability until their 60s (assuming they stay active). Especially strength. The reason top athletes quit from 30-40 is chronic injuries from years of doing it. Like the 40s 50s (maybe even a few rare early 60s) former world champion wrestlers that stayed active could give the current guys a tough match. They just wouldn't be able to handle the grind of pro level training or navigating a whole tournament without getting hurt, aggravating old injuries. If you let yourself go thought, you could be a mess by your mid 40s even.
