- 10 years on from the original look around Old Swan (linked below) I've seen it change before my eyes when going to visit my family every week who have lived in Old Swan for over 50 years now.
My VERY AMATEUR film covers how Old Swan looks today, I interviewed Richie from Fruitique Boutique, looked at how the pubs are getting on, the former Curzon cinema, Old Swan's ridiculous railing set up and of course how Tesco (in my opinion) killed Old Swan and its high street.

a great analysis of Old Swan.
As an architecture student at the University of Liverpool, I'm impressed by how well you connect with the community and explain the history and current trends in the neighbourhood.
Thank you! Much appriciated. Glad that it's been mainly well recieved first short film
I lived in Old Swan for 14 years. I am a southerner who loved the place and people. Tesco was very convenient but like everyone else I was vaulting the bloody barriers to get to Aldi and the library.
well documented article young man, i agree with the goodness sucked out of a community by large corporate retail.
Thank you glad you enjoyed it
Just came across your excellent report. I was brought up in Old Swan in the 1950’s and 60’. Sad to see the how detrimental the changes have been. Tesco being the biggest mistake. Even in my later years living in Old Swan congestion was becoming a problem. To put a supermarket in place of the flats that were demolished was just incomprehensible. I hope I’m not looking back through rose tinted glasses, but I don’t think so. Those were the days, the Regent and the Curzon cinemas, the fishmongers, Redmonds cooked meats, the cobblers, the pet shop, the bike shop. All you needed could be found locally. So sad when progress makes people unhappy.
Great vid. I just live round the corner and saw it all happen. Didnt realise that Tesco had done such a 'job' on the other shops with the barriers. Poor play Tesco.
Yeah unbelievable. There's a big backstory to the whole thing
Old Swan is not named after the old pub .
The Old Swan area & pub takes its name from the Swan's on the coat of arms of the important Medieval & well to do land owners the"Norris family" who owned the land , they also owned "Norris Green" , hence today's name . The family owned & lived in Speke Hall .
Really liked this video, moved away from Liverpool a few years ago and can't recognise much of old swan. Keep up the good work
Pablo Honey It's a great shame some of the losses to the Swan and what it has become. Glad you enjoyed
I used to live in Old Swan in the early 90's, it was a nice place to live at the time.
Pip It's still half decent now like
Good little look back at Old swan, I grew up in Woodhall road, but never go the Swan as parking is a nightmare, I have a feeling you will go far as you are young and ambitious to do clips like this well done👍
Thanks a lot we'll have to see! It's a shame the parking is stopping you getting down to the Swan, I know what you mean though, the top of the likes of Woodhall road and Pemberton are gridlocked with parked cars sometimes
lived in alderoad 84_85 n 89_90 many happy memories including nights out getting engaged in the masons in 1988 .going to st oswalds youth club in 84 .still visit old swan sometimes .
Stuart Innes Where are you living now
Stuart?
Excellent video, work well done
used to live in Pemberton road in the early ups then againearly 90s.
unfortunately can't recognize it anymore
I know it's such a shame isn't it
Interesting topic lad. . .Well produced and edited video. Good soundtrack aswell! Good Job x
Haha thanks. Never thought I'd be making a film about Old Swan like
Good documentary 👏 👌
I didn't even notice that they had knocked down that cinema lol. I hate driving round there too cos it's so busy. Fairly cheap housing though - I've considered living there once I can get a mortgage.
Yeah all gone now the whole site where it was is the home n bargain. Still quite a nice area yeah
Still live there as of now and it's a calm place, fairly busy but over all if I could move, I would.
Particularly enjoyed the interview with local shop owner, still there today. Ya even get a free sweet if ya a good enough customer ;) great little look at the swan. That big ugly building has been my place of work for the past four years and it's a madhouse! Any jobs? XD
Very good work. Well done. :)
Thanks a lot, I think your original video had something to do with that
Great, really interesting
I miss 2016
like the different type of documentary style video mate, good to see some diversity
I've been working on it since September. More for people who are from Liverpool but glad you enjoyed it! They won't be uploaded very often though
miss it :(
1:18 I've used that block to get over the railings. The is still one there now.
Still there
A good video but I do question the emphasis that you've put on the demolition of The Curzon. I started a petition locally to try to get this building preserved as an Art-Deco icon but I was astounded at the apathy that this petition indicated. Local folk just didn't seem to care! To them it was just an eyesore and I think most of them are now glad it's gone. The builders did say that they were going to try and retain some of the Art-Deco lines of the original but really, their effort has fallen way short of the mark. We now have a windowless brick blockhouse with as much appeal as an erotic sculpture in a convent!
I know I got the same sort of reception but the building and the shops in the building and the hustle and bustle down that end of the swan where childhood memories so I did want to include it. Some probably didn't see it for what it was but I think as well its down to residents not speaking up at the time. Some people are probably sad about what has replaced it and are missing the old cinema. When the flats where knocked down many residents didn't car but now the Tesco is here people are speaking up.
I live in old swan!
Taiga Roseen that’s great!

Here we are in 2019 and it’s only getting worse
Yung Punk I know what you mean like but it’s nice to see since the film that a micro pub has opened up, and the dessert bar seems to be popular.
Too many fast food places and beggars on every corner, otherwise a nice community and shopping area. I enjoy the charity shops actually.
I live there
WACKAVICE C Great!
