Modern society preaches "hustle", but husting needs a lot of energy and stamina. Not everyone has the same high level of energy. This leads most of us to burn-out, depression, and loneliness. I for one always was a shy, quiet kid. I loved my time alone with books and movies. Being in the CS forced me to run faster than my ability and left me thinking I was a handicap in comparison to other extroverted, fast-paced students. Now I have come back to myself. I put my feet on the ground again and going with MY flow! Not society's.

As someone who severely burnt out to the point long term, life changing disability - it’s not worth it. I used to work 5am-11pm, travelling all over the country. And now? @@jjong0711 I couldn't agree more. I have also been neglecting my own health in this very context so it hits quite hard. Always working extra hours to get ahead on a project, always taking extra care to help someone else in the team out but as a result taking on way too much. Stressing about deadlines and thinking about work 24/7 due to the amount of tasks and projects outstanding. Worried about taking leave/taking time back as don't want to be behind with work. This is certainly no way to live but I feel like its the norm in big companies and it really has to change. My health has also declined significantly in the last months and I am pretty sure work pressures played a key part in that. Our company has recently made it clear that meetings should not be booked in people's calendars over the lunch hour as the shocking reality has been that most people just don't even get a chance to have a proper break in the day. I fully agree that it's people's responsibility to prioritise their health and wellbeing but the businesses need to stop pushing employees so hard as there is always another urgent project/task/meeting. I think managers overall have a big role to play here.

I tried to emulate that culture, but in the end, I feel so stressed and have had more anxiety than I could ever have. Reflecting on these events, I have come to realize that I don't need to hustle and bustle or "do more now" just to make an impact in the world. Yes, we should work towards a goal. Yes, we should value our time. Yes, we should use our skills to make the world a better place. But that doesn't mean we can't take it in pace. That doesn't mean we can't walk and slowly leave our mark. Just because we aren't doing "great" things or "many" things at the moment, does not mean we won't. Every person's journey is different. Some people make impacts in later stages in life, some do it when they're young. That is to say, we should value our own journey and not be pressured to "go with the flow". My wife and I were just asking each other this evening what a perfect day would look like. I wrote down everything we said on my whiteboard and it was surprising how pretty much all of it was really doable. Like every day doable. Good food, good coffee, laughter, the woods, hiking, being near water, time with family, good music, etc. We realized there's no reason to not try and hit as many of those targets as possible every single day, even if we just get a single one in. This video really resonated with that for me - pursuing the quality in life.

The inner work i was going through. I feel like my education was useless, in a way. but at the same time, i feel more full of life than when i exited high school, more content with myself. so i don't really know what i wanted to tell you with that. i can advise you to go travel and see the world once covid is less of a problem. get out there into the mess, get crushed and destroyed and build yourself up from the ruins. this is what i intend to do, too. and this is what has transformed me and made the colors much more vibrant.
(edit: i don't think it doesn't matter as much what you study exactly as long as it feels in line with what you value and are interested in. the important thing is to just jump into life and get messy and never forget what you want, but at the same time be open to life's surprises. you never know. the best things come unexpected. and if you don't know yet what you want, you'll find out once you jumped. just start somewhere that feels vaguely correct. or do sth else entirely before you pick a course)

Like others have commented, hustling will lead to burnout and depression eventually. I don't think it's a matter of "if", it's a matter of "when." Those same kids that are staying up all night ot study for a test are only going to crash and burn in a few years time and they'll have to learn how to take a more balanced approach to life.
As for bad consequences if you don't hustle, maybe a smaller bank account if you consider that "bad." Then again, you might burnout if you hustle too hard and have to quit working for a while, so your bank account may not even be larger. Either way, money isn't everything. Quality of life and the quality of the relationships you form matters infinitely more in the long-term.

Thanks Mayuko for making this video, I needed it... I've been hustling since I got out of highschool, working 2 part-time jobs and being a caregiver for my grandmother with mild - severe dementia. I've come from a very poor background in a third world country, so poor that I have a 100% scholarship just based on my socioeconomic status. I've also taken my fair share of bad choices in life and for years husting became my only coping mechanism to deal with my situation, now I'm in my last year of IT engineering and earning 5x what I earned before with my 2 part-time jobs in a part-time Internship.
And while I acknowledge that if I had given just a little less effort in my life I would not be in big tech today, I also fully know that I missed most of my 20's hustling to validate my worth through work and academics. Maybe it was what I needed to do at the time to get to where I wanted, but now I realized all that I missed out on and everything that I pushed aside to make room for what I thought necessary.
Maybe my hustle won't end just yet, but I'll reassess my priorities and focus on happiness and wellbeing without feeling like a failure.

I'm trying to set up a couple things with my income and online brands in the mean time that'll allow me to simply maintain and scale for the rest of my college years. At least that's what's on the whiteboard. College ain't really a means of getting full time employment for me. More or less just gaining the skills to turn ideas into real income producing projects. I hustle and struggle last year during 2020 with my busniess last year so hard just because my ex finacee wanted me to earn more money. And just when i was starting to earn more money she cheated on me and left for a richer guy. It is honestly digusting and mentally draining, makes me doubt what i was working for? I broke down, was hospitalise, had depression and struggle to keep my young busniess afloat every single day. Such videos really helps me process my pain fortunately.
All i am left with is resentment and hatred. My lesson? Dont hustle just because someone force you to. Find that balance yourself.

i totally relate to this!!! i was exposed to hustle culture in HS but didn’t really feelthe toxicity until college (2015-2018). I was severely depressed and anxious in college and i couldn’t pinpoint exactly what was so toxic. it wasn’t until covid and work remote hit (2020) that i finally realized i had internalized so much self hatred for not naturally adopting hustle culture the way my peers in college had. i felt less than and lazy and like a big loser for not having the same desire to land a 6fig salary job straight out of grad and work 24/7. i felt like a total loser hearing my friends talk about their promotions and work travel stories and hearing about their grind. only then was i able to start healing. we all have our own journeys and we are all dealt different cards. we all value different things and we should stay true to ourselves to find happiness. if pursing a career and grinding to climb the corp ladder brings my friend happiness, i shouldn’t assume it will do the same for me. i’m glad that i know that now and am taking the time to figure out what actually is important to me instead of doing what my peers are doing :-). anyways, thanks for posting and spreading awareness on topics like this :-)

Omg this is so relatable. Worked at a SF tech startup that I commuted 3hrs a day to and from for almost 2 years, working long hours until I burned out and quit. Still slightly hustling, but pursuing paths that align more with my mindset: become my own boss. That startup is literally about to IPO and I'm still happy I left to pursue news content as a contractor and freelancer. It's more fulfilling to be in charge. 😌

I echo your desire for thoughtfulness and intentionality. Hustle culture is embedded within the entrepreneurial mindset, which resonates with many Americans. I get that many people want to break out on their own and not get stuck in corporate jobs, but the worship of hustle culture is unhealthy. I spent the first 7 years of my career in inside sales, which is an entire hustle culture on its own. Many people try to be the fastest in getting qualified leads and closing deals, optimizing everything to minimize the time spent working on a transaction and maximizing volume. But that wasn't my style. I put diligent work in trying to understand my clients' needs and genuinely trying to help them out. I may have had fewer transactions, but I would still hit my sales volume quota because my clients were willing to spend more money when I built quality relationships with them. I was still more successful than many coworkers who were trying hustle. Hustling isn't the only way to success.

I've always needed some time to recover from hard work or study. For example, I chose not to study during weekends when I was in university. This applies even more now that I have a job in tech, for I need to establish a boundary between work and private life / hobbies.

Some wise words there. The problem with working in tech is that there is always more to learn, more to read, more to practise...before we know it, burnout hits. We are not robots and we need rest in order to be productive and healthy.

@@ayumisae6864 I'm glad you came up with this topic, Ayumi. I definitely agree with you as I faced the problem of learning new things right from the start. I spent the first week of my first job figuring out where I was and what I didn't know. Studying new programming languages/software libraries and use them practically right away works best for me, so I'm really into learning-on-the-job. If an employer wants me to acquire new notions, I'm the kind of person that asks for a learning course (I really don't feel like spending my free time during the weekends on something that reminds me of work).
Rest is essential for a healthy life style, so don't ever feel guilty when you need it. As Mayuko says, it's ok not to be productive sometimes :)

@@leqok4878 Very true! Unfortunately often the employer is happy to fund a learning course but the reality is that most of it has to be done in employee's own time as there is just too much work involved. So it's the case of do I take the opportunity to learn and improve but sacrifice my own time outside of work, or turn it down which will look really bad and probably prevent me from getting any raises or promotions as will not be as skilled as my team mates/also will look suspicious to the business as to why I don't want to grow and complete the course if it's paid for. It's one of the dilemmas but overall I totally agree with you that we do need to take rest when it's needed! :)

There is a diversity of many types of people with very different motivations. Having managed and mentored many people in different life stages in this profession, I found that there are unique perspectives and approaches to working in tech that some people would love and some would hate. Listening to more perspectives would help you decide if this is right for you or not. Having done this for so long, I love it and gotten used to the hustle. :-)

I'm glad you made a video talking about this topic. Growing up and especially through college, we are taught via movies, TV, mentors, teachers, professors to work hard to be successful. But the success they talked about was purely professional and financial. There was nothing about working smart or even a different definition of success. I always felt like I wasn't living up to my potential if I didn't burn myself out at work. It took me over ten years of being a working man to finally come into my own about the definition of success. I was tired of letting society define it for me. I define a well balanced life as successful. There is so much more to life than one's work and how much money you make or how high you are up the corporate ladder.
