What Should I Do With My Money? | I AM BLACK with Brandon Marshall, Chad Johnson & More

- In a special edition of I Am Athlete, We are celebrating Black History Month with our I Am Black Series, highlighting the everyday success of black men and women. In this episode, the guys sit down with former NFL All Pro Adewale Ogunleye who transitioned from football into becoming UBS's Head of Global Sports and Entertainment, the #1 Wealth Management Entity in the world.
Brandon, Fred and Channing come ready to take notes and ask questions about mistakes they have made and finding a different way to look at finances and long term investments. Wale said during his playing days, he realized that the failure of financial advisors to speak athletes' language was leaving many athletes and young people vulnerable to bad advice. After his playing days were finished, he invested in a future to help athletes and entertainers find a better way.
Wale tells Brandon and Fred that, "Money in families show flow from the top down, but when athletes make it, the problem is, it goes from them upward, which is where things get out of sorts," while Channing agrees it starts with how people are raised and the communities they are from.
In celebration of other black Chefs and entrepreneurs, Chef Nancie invites Shawn Williams, the owner of strictly wings and Magic Soul Food, who shares his story on how he started from the ground up spurring his love for cooking into owning 13 different restaurants. Shawn is very candid about his mission to prove people wrong when so many doubted that he wouldn't be able to succeed.

"You ask the right questions, you scare the people who don't have good intentions away" -Adewale Ogunleye
Whew....🔥🔥💎💎
I love that! So true you ever notice that when you start asking questions they tend to pull back because they didn't expect that
@@melissalitus8879 absolutely!!! Knowing the right questions to ask is Key
@@CoachMikeD yes I agree 100% we all should do this. Lol we can't let anyone pull a fast one on us

@Stock starters
Excellent point. Do you have a channel about finance? I will love to hear more from you.
When Fred grabs his hat! It’s over with Knowledge N Wisdom Starts Spilling out!
On God!!!!
Facts
I thought it was just me who noticed everytime he gets at his hat!!! Great minds think alike!!!! Fred stays dropping knowledge!!! Love it!
U should've put a time, cuz Fred grabbed that hat a few times. And each time I'm ready for the flood💯
Right, I think Fred met his match!
Loved these conversations but Chef Nancy bring out another chef and giving him the spotlight with a smile on her face was so empowering
It was such a graceful move to be so confident in who you are to share your blessing with someone else.
Facts and Chef Nancie is the BEST!! Lover her vibe 💝💝
Yesssss 💙💙💙
What it shows is that black people need to do just that.... support and expose our fellow black person. We need to stop being known as stepping on each other and being known to pull each other up
That's how you keep the money trickling down within our people. ❤✊🏽🗣
Can't call him Freaky Fred anymore. Call him Financial Fred!
Right!
@Differential Education damn right
Funding Frederick!
“Your 40 year old self will thank your 20 year old self for putting 20% up” 💯💯💯 that’s valid

Brandon's support for Chef Nancie is so refreshing. And her highlighting other chefs is beautiful. Issa Rae said it best: Instead of networking up, we should be networking to the side. Our peers are our networks.
Love this!
This☝️ Im so glad for this comment. I hate that ppl always talk bout him interrupting but dont give him credit for comment like this.

Why is that scary? It’s a beautiful thing.

Fred Taylor is a real OG like a UNC I neva had
1. You need to be financially literate no matter your financial status. Be prepared for when you make it or your child etc...
2. Money is options. It gives you the ability to do whatever tf you want to do. Whether that's go on a family vacation or never work for "the man" again. No one likes rushing back from a vacation to wake up that Monday and go to work the following morning.
3. "Show me your friends, I'll show you your future." It's simple, no matter who it is, mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, never surround yourself with any who doesn't support you to the fullest, keep you moving in the right direction, or doesn't have your best interest at heart. Don't be so haste to call just anyone your friend. Being alone is EXTREMELY important to the individual growth of a person no matter the age.
Agree!
The best CZcams comment I’ve ever seen in my life
Fred is the GEM of this show. He is the only SERIOUS ONE when it comes to MONEY! INVESTOPEDIA, I know he about business
I dnt know abt that...he is an avid student but everyone on the show are millionaires and have invested...trust me Brandon and Channing and definitely Ocho are very serious abt their money..Thats why they have been able to hold onto their money even after they have retired as athletes.
Hey aren't you the juicing guy on Instagram Nomadic Juicer? Or have you just ripped off his profile pic?
If you are him, then you are awesome! You actually encouraged me to buy a juicer and start juicing - real talk! You should be a guest on this show too to give a perspective on foods.
@@shakratdosunmu5232 Stop Hating on Fred Taylor..
Fred is my favorite, I remember when we use to say watch out for the quiet ones. I see why, I've never heard him speak during his NFL career, but now that he is talking. Man DAMN HE DROPPING MAJOR BOMBS💯💯💯✊🏾✊🏾✊🏾
What makes this show great is that even tho these men are rich they have conversations and give advice that anyone can benefit from and also have conversations of things average people go through salute fellas
I love this podcast as a 17 yr old Latino I can’t relate to being a young black male but when bmarsh and all you guys talk about everything it all just makes me think about the right things and it’s so hard to think about the right things and take those steps so thank y’all this like my counsel and the only counseling I get so thank you guys for putting these conversations out there
As a young minority, all of the discussion relates to you as well. The financial pieces are universal so at 17 you are fortunate to have a front row seat to financial literacy.
It’s cool to see young guys watching this type of content too. I’m 32, makes me hopeful for the future 🙌🏾
As a 37-year-old Latino just know that being aware of where you may feel deficient-financial advice, emotional advice-is the first step to improving, my dude. Then from there you’re able to start seeking out good sources of information and building your playbook as you look to improve your game. It’s a long road and it’s forever a work in progress. But just know that you being 17 and being hungry for better information is a helluva first step and the most important step. Much love to you. ✊
Education don't have a color young bro just make sure whom ever you learn from are doing right by what they teaching.
@@RickyGuttasouffCollins 💯
Although, finding the right in a world of 97% wrong is very challenging, sadly!
I wish B.Marshall stop interrupting when people about to drop them jewels 😂😂😂 his “I’m sorry for cutting you off” head ass‼️ B let the talking flow bro, damn get out of yo own way.
B Marahall happy you are getri g the kowledge but the interruptions which are only to pat yourself on the back are REALLY ANNOYING. Please let everybody shine
@lanaT @jayMatt I feel the same way!!!!! Damn!!!! His wife do the same thing. It's making it difficult to watch 🤦🏾♀️
It was really critical in this episode he really cut off Mr. Wale's train of thought that about to be gold but we never got it 😩
I noticed this also!!! Cause it's not like it has happened just one or two times... This is a re-occurring thing
I know right! It drives me nuts.
A POWERFUL episode! Financial literacy is NEEDED in the black community!
Agree
Badly!!!! I’m gonna enroll in some classes
Big up to Chef for paying it forward and sharing her small but important platform.. Bound to succeed with that attitude!!
When Fred touches his hat. He’s about to speak facts!
And when he pulls in down, Fred is about to go deep.
Financial literacy is something that should not only be taught to young athletes, but young people and adults in general. The things I wish I had paid attention to, or simply known about would have done wonders for me.
Facts... I wish i had this information back when.
And it should start early. Can easily be incorporated with a math curriculum
The best book I’ve ever read on financial education was rich dad poor dad by Robert Kiyosaki. A must read if you’re serious about taking control of your finances. And it’s an easy read
Perhaps it's on "purpose," that it's not "taught" or emphasized within the black Community. 🤔
@@JLedesma17 True. It's an easy read, but that dude is a hack. Nevertheless, it's better than nothing at all.
I used to work with Wale's father, although his father was not educated in finance, he was educated man who talked to everyone about education. I'm sure one of the main reasons he went back to school was the influence of his parents
Do you mind sharing more? What industry & wisdom he would share?
Knowledge is good, but its what you do with the knowledge that makes you wise. 👊🏾
Preach💯
True. It's not enough to know what to do, you also have to do what you know.
Real talk! Knowledge is learning, Awareness is understanding the knowledge, Wisdom is knowing how to implement it!
My whole life i thought my mom was bad with money and that we were broke, all because we didn’t have all the fancy designer things. Which drove me to save and really pay attention to my coins. Fast forward 20 years saw her bank account and she’s far from broke!
I love that shout out to your mom's
Never show your wealth
Fred out here dropping JEWELS.
Adewale is on point about the "cultural disconnect" that happens in the financial industry. Especially when you're dealing with athletes who are first generation wealth.
I love this dialogue. We are long overdue for this conversation.
Yessir! Hopefully people watching this will also be driven to check your channel out! ✊🏾
I also respect and love your advice too bro. Keep up the good work
The real Chris up in these comments too?? Sheesh
It’s about time smh but not
Going to bitter rant. Happy to see it but man, 8:19
It’s taking a Nigerian who’s coming with fresh eyes and an eclectic view for Athletes to finally see their blindspots and how much they don’t know about Resources & Power. I’ve Been trying to Enlighten them Since Grade schools
They gotta get Chris on here!!!!!!
Channing loves that bank teller seeing his money story 😂
“And I hit her” 😂😂😂 he had to get that out
Fred you are so right Financial 101 needs to be a require education. "If you don't have money why do you need to know about money" Adewale Ogunleye needs to be heard! "How do you get paid." Legacy = ..Build Family Wealth by investing in the future. Guys build a Discord community to broaden your reach. Let's talk about disrupting industries to create Billionaires, you have the platform to monetize the celerity of Athletes and Entertainers.. Fred your right buy another home and let some one else pay for it. You guys are the best.
First things first, making a budget and sticking to it is a must.

Yea this episode should have been well over an hr...
I’ve had this conversation with many of my friends about how the black man who makes it out of the struggle has to go back and take care of everyone he ever said hi too in his neighborhood. That stress is not placed on the white man. Money is very stressful.
I like that Fred speaks slow you can understand everything. You can tell it bothers some of the guys.

money isnt everything but you need it for everything !!!
This show is too AMAZING!! My mans Adewale Ogunleye said the best thing about how money should flow down not up as a 30 year old taught me so much!!
I think another important thing to consider here is that your wants and needs at 21 are not the same as your wants and needs at 40. The struggle for anyone at 21 is to realize that 20 years will fly by and planning for that day should start now.
Absolutely
It's crazy cause I tell my 16 year old daughter who's ago to be 17 that you'll 18 in 2yrs and then you gone look up and you're going to be 25 then 30 and you gone be like damn where did time go and I'm trying to tell her this after living for almost 37yrs
Understanding the language of finance is critical in entrepreneurship - negotiating deal structures. Other bosses here? Watching from London.
This is crazy! I love this podcast! Nobody teaches us how money works. We just get thrown out to the world and as a minority we have to get right to work because nobody helps us understand MONEY. Respect to the Podcast! Keep this coming guys!
Facts bruh like Fred I know my parent was not financially literate. I made a lot of mistakes only the way. Trying to educate my kids and grandkids to the can be better than me. Much respect to this Podcast, straight fire!!!
Absolutely
It's not just us minorities who lack financial literacy. It's everyone. Rich kids are even worse off at times on financial literacy because they don't understand the value of a dollar vs. us, who didn't have a dollar to know the value of

I’m a former pro athlete and I tune in weekly to this show. I started my business Second 2 None Exotics Inc (rebuilding crashed exotic cars, buying, renting and reselling exotic cars) and when you guys talked about the money flowing from the bottom up that was big for me. I always speak about other cultures solidifying legacy’s and passing down knowledge but our own culture doesn’t seem to consistently follow suit. I think shows like this highlight that and teaches young athletes how to curve that trend. I respect what you guys are doing keep going. My cousin Chauncy Washington played with Fred in Jacksonville has a lot of respect for him.
Awesome
Yo B-Marsh, yall really got somethin goin on with this I AM ATHLETE... yall educate me every Monday, whether its finding out what yall players being doin n ur lives, 2 bettering ourselves as a community ✊🏿 i love it bro, I look forward 2 next Monday like clockwork.... Exactly Fred, as a teacher I start off with Terminology before any Lesson.
Whoever gave this a thumbs down is mad they giving game away for free..,
I just don't get it🤔
This show is what true black excellence represents. Blessing others, giving advice, reaching down and lifting up with knowledge.
Fred giving good advice at 42:58 regarding the possible housing market and rental properties forebearance in 2022 . Another way to look at it for us common folk is why buy a car for $50K when you can take that $50K and put it down towards a rental property (townhouse) and the renter pays your mortgage?

This was good af!!!!! Currently investing, saving n building a legacy for my kid.
I love how much respect they give to the Chef’s and every guest they bring in
I cannot understand how 68 ppl cannot like this conversation. 🤬
It literally puzzles me how you cannot like to grow. The information that I'm receiving in these conversations are incredible! I'm moderately successful in my life and if I don't find knowledge in podcasts and/ or videos, I scroll by. Ppl have to evaluate their lives. Just my thoughts.
I watch every video and really listen to EVERYBODY who speaks YALL helped me alot
I appreciate this account so much! It has educated me so much as an 18 year old. Can’t wait to put this knowledge into action as I attack life and head to college
You can do. I believe in you
Just like any grown man or women it is their individual responsibility to learn the “language” of money or finances, regardless of their profession or how much they make.
They want athlete’s ignorant to rob them in the product they create.
Point blank period!!💯
Another great episode on finances. Please bring the guest back he had a lot good information!
Liquidity, Longevity, Legacy!!!
I learn and mature mentally every time Fred speaks! This show is apart of daily ritual. Knowledge is definitely power!
It’s so fire seeing people that look like me having conversations like this and having a these types of relationships and just educating each other and sharing there platforms. From the guys to chef Nancy. No one is afraid of someone else stealing there “light” they know what’s meant for them is meant for them. A real blessing
That’s one thing that needs to change. Yes we need to help our family(the ones that raised us) yet we need to help them educate themselves and help them grow whatever little bit of money they have. Even if you give them $1000 each. You can help them grow that into something that they’ve never seen before!
Loving this show man! Learned so much from these guys. Much needed in our community!
Channing is that guy you GOTTA HAVE on ya podcast yo !!! 😂😂😂
One thing I love about my family is we learned things for knowledge itself so we didn’t need to “have money” to understand it. A lot of people I’ve known don’t get taught anything other than what applies at the moment and that’s a major issue we have in our black community.
Brandon Marshal my dawg 💯 but it bothers me when he don’t let people finish talking 🙃🙃🙃

Watching these brothers fight it out but still at the end of the day show each other respect, love, and support also helping young brothers and athletes financially and mentally. As a young black man I really appreciate this show and how I can see black men come together and actually care about each other and really want to see each other succeed in every way and how they treat black women and showing that our black women are very important and have a voice within society and in a relationship.
