  • In a special edition of I Am Athlete, We are celebrating Black History Month with our I Am Black Series, highlighting the everyday success of black men and women. In this episode, the guys sit down with former NFL All Pro Adewale Ogunleye who transitioned from football into becoming UBS's Head of Global Sports and Entertainment, the #1 Wealth Management Entity in the world.
Brandon, Fred and Channing come ready to take notes and ask questions about mistakes they have made and finding a different way to look at finances and long term investments. Wale said during his playing days, he realized that the failure of financial advisors to speak athletes' language was leaving many athletes and young people vulnerable to bad advice. After his playing days were finished, he invested in a future to help athletes and entertainers find a better way.
Wale tells Brandon and Fred that, "Money in families show flow from the top down, but when athletes make it, the problem is, it goes from them upward, which is where things get out of sorts," while Channing agrees it starts with how people are raised and the communities they are from.
In celebration of other black Chefs and entrepreneurs, Chef Nancie invites Shawn Williams, the owner of strictly wings and Magic Soul Food, who shares his story on how he started from the ground up spurring his love for cooking into owning 13 different restaurants. Shawn is very candid about his mission to prove people wrong when so many doubted that he wouldn't be able to succeed.

    1. You need to be financially literate no matter your financial status. Be prepared for when you make it or your child etc...
    2. Money is options. It gives you the ability to do whatever tf you want to do. Whether that's go on a family vacation or never work for "the man" again. No one likes rushing back from a vacation to wake up that Monday and go to work the following morning.
    3. "Show me your friends, I'll show you your future." It's simple, no matter who it is, mom, dad, brother, sister, aunt, uncle, never surround yourself with any who doesn't support you to the fullest, keep you moving in the right direction, or doesn't have your best interest at heart. Don't be so haste to call just anyone your friend. Being alone is EXTREMELY important to the individual growth of a person no matter the age.

I’m a former pro athlete and I tune in weekly to this show. I started my business Second 2 None Exotics Inc (rebuilding crashed exotic cars, buying, renting and reselling exotic cars) and when you guys talked about the money flowing from the bottom up that was big for me. I always speak about other cultures solidifying legacy’s and passing down knowledge but our own culture doesn’t seem to consistently follow suit. I think shows like this highlight that and teaches young athletes how to curve that trend. I respect what you guys are doing keep going. My cousin Chauncy Washington played with Fred in Jacksonville has a lot of respect for him.

Another way to look at it for us common folk is why buy a car for $50K when you can take that $50K and put it down towards a rental property (townhouse) and the renter pays your mortgage?

That’s one thing that needs to change. Yes we need to help our family(the ones that raised us) yet we need to help them educate themselves and help them grow whatever little bit of money they have. Even if you give them $1000 each. You can help them grow that into something that they’ve never seen before!

One thing I love about my family is we learned things for knowledge itself so we didn’t need to “have money” to understand it. A lot of people I’ve known don’t get taught anything other than what applies at the moment and that’s a major issue we have in our black community.

As a young black man I really appreciate this show and how I can see black men come together and actually care about each other and really want to see each other succeed in every way and how they treat black women and showing that our black women are very important and have a voice within society and in a relationship. So thanks to this show it inspired me to work harder and actually move with a different perspective about a lot of things
