I appreciate the comments about recovery drinks. I’m a pro at doing big hikes and feeling like garbage the next day because I wait hours to refuel. Definitely going to modify some things. Thanks!
I was 100% the same! I defo recommend checking out gear sceptics video, he goes into a lot more detail on the recovery drinks than I did and it’s super interesting :) Goodluck!
Helpful. Your friend with the salmon has the right idea. He’s getting anti inflammatory benefits from the salmon - less pain from the hiking, faster joint recovery/more resilience and excellent heart and brain food. Glad you recommended Gear Skeptic, he’s the best.
Just found your channel! Subscribed
Smoked salmon, cashews, and a cosmic crisp apple was my favorite dinner on trail. When i ran out of apples i'd pick huckleberries to have with my fish and nuts. Thanks for putting me in this Zippy!
-by the way
Yey BytheWay! Ohh how I miss those wild huckleberries! Hope your keeping well my friend :)
Great tips, Ash. ❤ Thank you for putting these videos together, I find them really helpful in my planning and ideas for my hike. When I run ultras I use Mountain Fuel breakfast before the race and after long training runs I use their recovery powder for the same reasons you gave for your Breakfast Essentials. I agree it makes a difference having tried with and without.
So wonderful to see you again. Thanks for all the excellent advice!
You are so welcome!
❤❤
12:07. Food is fuel natural or junk. Fuel → Energy → Hiking. Simple as that, if nutrition is critical then you must accept failure of thru hiking, or carry the extra weight.
I get your point but also, if I ate only for calories I am not sure I would feel so great hiking for 5+ months. I certainly felt the difference when living off a typical thru hiking diet vs when I added more nutritious foods into my diet but Ofcourse we are all individual :)
@@ashobrienoutdoors Yes, too bad theres not much to forage except berries. Another way to eat healthy is just carry extra weight for more cookery equipment and food. Especially, if u r a stronger hiker.
Did you order Fuel in the US before you started on the trail? Was wondering if I could just order it and have it shipped to Scout and Frodo for my first resupply boxes
You can order huel within the US. To start with I ordered a large amount to scout and Frodos and bagged it up and sent it out over 6 resupply boxes (details are in my resupply video). As I went I just ordered it as I needed. Me and another hiker split an order which was great cause we could
Order more flavours and split them .
It is messy work sorting out the bags though. I had covid so ended up getting my boxes from scout and Frodos and had days in a hotel to organise bags and I made such a mess I was glad I had a hotel to do it in so I’m not sure if I’d recommend sorting it at theirs 😄
And do you have any tips for adding some calories for the meals besides olive oil. 400 cal/100 g is a little on the low side when you need 4000 a day. Did you try shelfstable parmean, bacon bits or something else?
It’s 200cal per scoop so you can just use as many scoops as you want. I started on 3 scoops, but found it was too much for me so I stick with 2 scoops and had extra nibbles with dinner. I would often add salt and vinegar crisps, sometimes tuna or if I’m not long out of town I loved a bit of bread with it. I finished the trail pretty much the same weight I started so this combo was pretty good for me :)
@@ashobrienoutdoors so you had 3-3,5 meals in one bag?
@@maja_on_the_trail the bag itself from huel contains 7 meals (2 scoops each). I separated this into 1 meal per bag, so 2 scoops per bag (400cal per meal), however I tried upping the calories per meal using 3 scoops per meal, but found the two scoops was fine for me :)
How about electrolytes?
An important topic I forgot to mention! I recommend checking out gear skeptics video on electrolytes. There’s a link to his channel in the video description, he will do the topic justice was more than I could anyway 😄
Enjoyed this video and definately concidering Fuels meals but it's on the heavy side as for cal/g. How did you bump the dishes up to have a bit more calorie besides olive oil? Any tips? Did you get tired of eating these same dishes. I don't plan on changing my tent like you did (2 pounds) so in order to keep the weight down, i need to have higher calorie density in my food. I will also try the greens 👍
@@maja_on_the_trail I got tired of the shakes but the savoury meals were better because they have lots of flavours so I would sometimes have a different one each night. I got really sick of the Thai green curry one though cause I ate that a lot when I was testing it out before hand. If you want super calorie dense foods though huel might not be the best choice but you’d need to check the grams per calories and compare. My other favourite meal was backpacker pantry lasagna , was over 600cal per meal and fairly light :)
@@ashobrienoutdoors can I write to your IG instead? I have some more questions.
