- Inside the Belgian Waffle Ride Cedar City, Utah with Joe and Kendra Goettl. This was my 3rd time racing the BWR in Utah, and after two consecutive 9th's, it was great to finally get a podium with 4th Overall!
I've Raced BWR in California, Ariznona, and Kansas, but Utah takes the front page in my book as the most technical course of all the BWR's, and of any gravel race I've competed in!

It’s so cool seeing a POV of the pointy end of the race! Keep it up!
Awesome video and great job! I found your page while CZcams surfing last week. Now subscribed and a fan. Thanks for making the effort to share!
Great video and extraordinary finish. You're insanely strong. I also participated in the race and I finished in just over 11 hours. To average the wattage you did on the variety of road surfaces we had is no trivial feat. Congrats on 4th place and thank you for sharing / editing this. I won't ever be in a lead group in this life time, but it's pretty sweet to live vicariously through your footage.
Yo!, Nelson Vails calling That was a cool fun ride with you guys. Great job on the video editing I know its hard to get it all in.
Course looks so brutal! I can’t imagine going that fast on the rougher sections. My wrists and shoulders are screaming in agony just watching!
Nice to see and hear the person behind the RAW videos. I've been watching the RAW videos for my indoor training. I became so immersed in one of the videos that I tried to bunny hop a rut in the gravel on my trainer. That nearly didn't end well. I had also set out to do a zone 2 ride. That didn't happen. It was full gas, thinking (wishing) that it was me behind the bars. Thanks so much and looking forward to more videos and watching your success. Maybe you will try the BWR on Vancouver Island, Canada that's in my home town of Duncan.
Haha glad the bunny hop didn’t end badly! Thank you for watching and the nice comment!
well done. off course better than a flat or mech which i’m surprised nobody got on that singletrack. strong ride bro.
Thanks for the video!
For freaks sake! That was a podium for sure, everytime you got dropped or they escaped, I was all in rooting for you! You guys were flying dude! That car was such bad timing because I think with fatigue setting in, seems like it distracted you. I know that feeling of been on the wrong course. I was once in Breakaway and even the lead car had it wrong and it cost me the race! Was guttered and I never forget it! Thanks for reminding me! LoL. Well Done, 9 is now a decent memory! Next year it’s a win…
thanks for posting, I'm loving this sport.
Awesome video, I felt so excited as if I were there fighting for the podium positions !!! Please keep up the videos and of course CONGRATS on your performance, greetings from Mexico !
Thank you! Two more races for the season so two more videos to come!
great editing!
Fantastic video Joe. Thanks for putting these together.
Nice recap and vid👍🏻
Great ride,Joe and fantastic video race report....
Awesome job!
Nice video! ❤
Great video! Love the content. Subscribed!
😮
Joe - fantastic riding on a super tough course! What is the proper gear to be in for loose sand on a gravel bike? Any techniques you can share with us in your videos would be much appreciated!
We were coming off a downhill into the sand and Cody took my line so I pretty much came to a stop, I should have shifted down a couple more gears but not exactly sure what gear I should have been in, (pre riding this spot would have helped and that would be my best advice to go out and test it yourself! As far as technique, you kind of need to separate the bike body connection and let the bike weave around a little bit as you go through the sand.
@jgoettl2.0 Awesome - thanks for the reply!
Great race, congrats on the podium, and appreciate the recap! That was a wicked tough day out between the heat and the single track sections so super impressive to see how you guys in the lead group maintained the power and handling skills throughout, while avoiding cramping!!!. I'm still suffering from post-BWR Utah PTSD! LOL Your race vids are fantastic - Thank you! BTW - How would you rate SD, Utah and AZ from a technical challenge standpoint? I thought Utah was over the top TBH so worried about AZ.
Thank you! Arizona was much easier from a technicality standpoint! The first downhill in az has a little be to be careful with, but its not super long. And while there is more single track in AZ, the majority of it is pretty easy going in contrast to Cedar City! I did run the pirelli gravel H's in 45's which I think I'll do again next year. However, I'd maybe recommend something with a bit more traction if you want more confidence in the dirt!
@17:17 that's a white knuckle moment.
Great riding.
Yeah I hit a rock going into that right handed and lost the bars with my left hand for a sec 😅. Luckily was able to thread the needle through the rocks afterwards!
Good job! Congrats
Excellent tires. I use the same tires are they are fast. Low rolling resistance.
They are great for the BWR’s! Only down side is they are slightly heavy, but it’s worth the extra protection!
Great video and well done in hammering out that course. You have to be pleased with all the training and prep that went into that. I have a question if you could please help. What device did you use to measure your wattage in order to post all the telemetry? I have been out of racing for decades and just now getting back training for an event in Feb. I would like to be able to analyze my training a little better and have that race data to look at. Thanks
Thanks Jason!
I use quarq power meters on all my bikes as I’m running sram. Then I use a wahoo element roam to record the ride and display power while riding.
Getting the power on the video is a bit of a process. First the footage needs to be converted to mp4 which I use Final Cut Pro to do. Then i upload to garmin virb edit and upload a .fit file of my ride to virb as well. Then you have to match and process a video for every clip before sending it back to Final Cut Pro to make it into one video again 😅.
For data analysis of power I use training peaks! I’m also a coach and if you decide to get a power meter, I can help with planning structured workouts for whatever your goals are if your interested!
Thanks for watching!
As a post professional myself, that above setup and roundtrip of the captured video is priceless! I was wondering how you did that and In the end it looks fantastic!
Incredible, single track on a gravel bike. How do you not get a flat?🤔 Great ride Joe!
Thanks Frank! I had some beefy tubeless pirelli tires on with foam inserts protecting the rims, they’ve been great for the more treacherous gravels races like this one!
That new "gravel" section tho 😅
Whats your favorite part of Mn to train gravel in? i love the redwing area
I’ve heard the Redwing area is great for gravel! I do love riding in the area where I’m from around Mankato though!
What’s the song at 8:15 please? I’ve watched this video a few times and that song always makes me want to pedal hard.
What song is playing at minute 17?
i would love to know that gopro holder man.. what brand?
It’s the old GoPro chesty, similar to the new one but without the padding. I wear it under my jersey, zip the jersey up to the go pro, then pin the jersey together above the go pro
thank you for the elaborate answer... mine keeps flapping around... its a garter one.. i wanted something like yours.. not much movement @@jgoettl2.0
@@anthonyhomercycling no problem. Which go pro are you running and what setting. I have the 11 here and turning on hypersmooth boost helped get alot of the movement out! I use that setting in superview
hero 8 only, ah yes i havent tried the hyperboost yet@@jgoettl2.0
Great video- and great editing. You could lose the music.
i watched drew's video last week, were you the guy that binned it in front of him on the single track?
That was Cody Cupp he caught clipping a pedal and going OTB! I did wash out in front of drew but he didn’t get it on his go pro.
@@jgoettl2.0 ok i was wondering because in your video as you crashed you could see drew go by, i wondered if it was the same incident, loved the video btw
I missed it…. road shoes/pedals or MTB?
Road, I always go road unless it’s muddy, much more float in my road pedals so it’s easier on my knee and more comfortable. It’s supposedly better power transfer as well!
Why do people use the drop bars for this? Is there a specific reason? I really don't know much 😅
Only 45 minutes out of 6ish hours was spent on single track. The rest was much more optimal for the gravel bike and bigger gears needed!
@@jgoettl2.0 oh ok
17:03 what's that song?
“Like Shadows” by Ooyy and geminii
I have to say that was pretty weak signage at the spot you missed. A lot of visual distractions.
It was a tricky one! However, I should have done my homework and pre drove/rode this last section. Many gravel races have tricky finishes so its best to pre ride if your looking for a high end result!
