The original plan for BigHit’s new boy group back around 2010 was actually for them to be a hip hop group, hence why the first three members signed were two underground rappers/writers/producers (RM and Suga) and a street dancer (J-Hope). They eventually changed the direction into an idol group and started adding the vocal line members but the rap line were first and are kind of the musical pillars of the group from a writing standpoint, so the group as a whole started out with a strong hip hop focus.
When people start checking out early BTS, I always tell them that the music was excellent, lyrically meaningful, and personal from the start…but their stylists had a few crimes to answer for, let’s be real. Namjoon’s fake fade, I can’t 😅😭

One thing for sure is we WANT you to look at lyrics. Any sane Army will correctly push you in the right direction if the lyrics are wrong but if anyone jumps you, block and keep it moving. We don’t believe in those who get angry or something like that when we can be polite about it but you understood perfectly what no more dream was about and also don’t apologize for going on a rant. If any tannie song affects you, we’d love to hear it. BTS has helped many around the world, so me personally I love hearing stories of how they did. Thank you for your reaction 💜

I’m so glad you loved it. V and Jimin were in high school (JK hadn’t even entered high school yet!), and the others had just graduated (I think Jin was in early college like you were) - so this topic was so important for them specifically. Their first three albums/EPs are called “The school trilogy” because the theme is school and student life, with a big focus on critiquing the south korean education system (and young love/first crushes). My favourite thing about BTS albums is seeing them grow up with their albums - they always do concept/theme albums about topics and fears and questions that are affecting them at that point in their lives.
“Ask yourself if you’ve ever worked hard for anything?” really hit me when I first listened to this song. I’m very good at coasting along through life on autopilot and am lucky that school and academics come pretty easy to me. I’m thankfully very happy with my choice of degree and career, and definitely needed a university degree for my career, but that line made me realise I need to be a lot more proactive about my life and that I’m the one with the power to make these decisions/shape my life into one I actively want. Thank you for saying what you did about university. No one should be expected/forced to go for no reason.
(PS: with these very early songs, it’s actually better to use lyric videos imo… Subtitles were there, yes, but they hadn’t realised how many international fans would watch so translations are not as good or consistent as they are later 😅 And if you ever need more context/are confused by a lyric video, you can go to doolsetbangtan on wordpress for more info

We Are Bulletproof Pt 2 is a reference to an earlier (pre-debut) BTS song We Are Bulletproof. WAB was made in 2010 by RM, IRON and Supreme Boi (they were training to be BTS members at that time) and remade later by current members (it's not on any of their albums though, but you can find this version on youtube).

No, this was not a lot of KPop at the time. In fact, BTS were considered misfits. Very few were doing hard hip hop as idols and none had the kind of hard hitting, honest, speaking truth to power content that BTS members were writing. They had creative control of their direction from the start, as that was kind of the point for their producer Mr. Bang. They were Big Hit's first and only group. BTS were so different that KPop didn't know what to do with them, considering them ill-fitting for the industry, and other idols shunned them (also because the word went out from the music mafia big wigs to crush them utterly as poor, no-account upstarts with too much talent to be left alone....can't very well have them competing with the music princes and princesses from the golden spoon labels nor speaking truth to power like that.) The rap underground, where RM and Suga had been rising stars, hated and attacked them too, because a label signed them and because they formed an idol group. The idol industry considered them broke weirdos and were instructed to shun them by their managers and bosses. Shows and hosts abused them or ignored them.
All the boys had been cast off the street, straight from the underground or from music hagwons, etc. Jin was pulled off a bus by a Big Hit scout and JK was nabbed as a middle schooler from a music show audition fail (failed due to his extreme shyness.) They didn't know any other trainees from other agencies like many young hopefuls who get traded around. BTS really circled their wagons and became so close and tight knit because all they had was one another, and because Bang and Namjoon both encouraged and fostered a camaraderie and a brotherhood of "we're all in this together" instead of a competitive atmosphere among them as trainees.
All the guys who didn't make it into the final line up talk wistfully about their time with Big Hit as trainees being the best time of their lives and how they are not jealous of their success, but jealous that they still get to be together, because they miss them. The guys are so close and such a family that they chose to keep living together long past trainee days. They lived together close to 10 years. They talk about how they have always been rather isolated in the industry. Most of their friends came from the indie or international music scene. Once they finally earned respect in the idol industry they became so big that no one would approach them for friendship. Joon says most people felt too "pressured" to relax and be friendly with them. There were a few exceptions of artists who were more willful and ignored the label pressure to not fraternize with BTS.

BigHit had two other groups prior to BTS - one had several albums but disbanded for military. The other, a girl group, had a scandal (stalking, I think). It's in the Rise of Bangtan first or second chapter.

Big Hit never put together and trained a group before BTS. Previous groups were put together and trained by other labels and only comanaged or produced by Big Hit.
2AM and 2PM were the two halves of One Day, a JYP group put together through an MNET tv show. Big Hit helped comanage them with JYP and they released music under both labels, shifting management contracts back and forth for various members during their active years.
Glam was a Source Music group and Big Hit helped produce them.
8eight was a 3 member coed group co managed by Source Music and Big Hit.
The only artist to stay with Big Hit past about 2015 was Lee Hyun from 8eight. He is BTS only senior artist at their company. The only other group at BH is TXT, BTS junior group.
Big Hit had no training system, dorm, practice studio space, advertising staff, training personnel or any of that before BTS. They were strictly music producers who did some management. Their company was 10 full and part time employees, including Mr Bang, in an office suite in a crappy building. BTS truly was their first group and they had all their eggs in that basket.
BH was a very small company and they lost a lot of money they invested in producing Glam when the group fell apart in scandal in 2014. They were already deep underwater when BTS debuted in June 2013 and became desperately more so in 2014. Everything was riding on BTS.
The relationships to the other groups led to some collabs with BTS members, including a pre-debut collab between Jung Hoseok, not yet going by j-hope, and 2AM member Jo Kwon on Kwon's song Animal, as well as RM and Jungkook collabing with Jo Kwon and other artists (Johee from 8eight and JYP soloist Lim Jeong-hee) on a holiday song their debut year (Perfect Christmas.)

    Thanks for watching! 🫰💜
Sorry if people have been coming at you for how you do things. Based on my experience, the vast majority of viewers just go with the flow. Maybe we'll suggest something if we see it worked elsewhere. Generally though, we usually tell reacters, it's your channel, you do what you need to do for you. 😊
Ironically, cc on this video, and at least one other video from the early ones, don't have good cc anyways!
For the first year and a half that I was a fan, I rarely looked at BTS's lyrics. I picked songs based solely on the music. I also hadn't run across reacters before that time, so I was clueless.
I think Spine Breaker and Baepsae were the songs that got me curious about lyrics and were the start of me realizing there was more to them than just the music.
There were a lot of songs that I bypassed because I generally like more upbeat music. Some of those I bypassed are now my favorites.
Basically, I'm glad you check out the lyrics, however you decide to do it!
I don't know if you've run across this on Ateez line distribution videos, but I've noticed a few times where it incorrectly states who is singing. The main one I remember is from Airplane pt2. Jungkook was credited when it was Jin at one point and Jimin at another. I don't remember which channel it was, and I don't watch too many line distribution videos, but commenters can probably advise who is usually dependable and who is not when it comes to BTS. You may have to check with each fandom because the accuracy might vary.

BTS songs/lyrics give a lot of discussion and most importantly most of the time you can relate it to yourself/life. And when you know what they are singing is what they are thinking at that point.
This was the reason I found them different and went down the rabbit hole.

"We are bulletproof pr.1" was before debute song, you can find it on yt in form of lyric video.
When this song was made only RM was there and some another treinee, then BTS members did their version so it exist,, but it is unofficial song, all unofficial songs are on soundcloud.
"We are bulletproof pt 2" is song from debute EP together with "No more dream".
There will be 3 song "We are bulletproof: the enternal" later on bc it is from 2020 it also have MV.
This song are importnat bc of the bands name bangtan - bulletproof.
Hmm at that time when 3 gen started there were actually a lot heavier kpop group then later, but more on side noise music then hip hop... There were of course bands from k-hip hop genre, but there wasen't a band that put tgemself in kpop sphere with moslty hip hop sound, that was actually the biggest critic they got tgat they did hip hop, there was a lot of hate bc of the genre mix, hmm they still do hip hop but they really experiment now and mix a lot and try different things, but at tye begining they were heavy hip hop and some r&b, later few ballads and dance songs come but first 4 albums were like that tgen they shifted sound more but it wasen't sudenlly different band tgey still feld like them. Thru albums you simply see that they grow and wanted to try different things bc most albums have so different songs in style and so many genres that wow, you don't know what to expect...

"Their songs are long" (or something like that), well, it's funny that you mention it because lately in music a song usually lasts at most 3 minutes... BTS has always loved music and it's more of a feeling and a form to express themselves before society, so the duration will depend on what they believe is correct (nam/rm in their last album released a song longer than 6 minutes... and I love it with all my heart hehe), it's funny because now Companies make songs shorter so fans can play them more times a day, but bts simply rely on what they feel at the moment they create music :)
I'm glad you see the lyrics, there are some that have really changed lives... (as they grow their songs and their "concepts" change because they are based on what they live at that moment, so the more you advance in their discography maybe and you will find a song that marks you)
I'm sorry for my bad English, I'm not used to it haha, have a nice day

Am ARMY-made channel for lyric videos is Dial 6137. They’re not color coded but they’re accurate and not made by people who simply want to make a quick buck. If you notice, many of the big lyrics video channels put a chunk of different music at the end. If a video is only BTS music, HYBE/BigHit claims copyright and they get any ad revenue generated. Putting some of their own music at the end allows the lyric video channels to claim copyright and keep part of the revenue for themselves. The reason the lyrics are often inaccurate is that they make the videos sometimes less than an hour after a new song is released knowing that they will get millions of views. It’s purely a cash grab.

Hi Jessica, As BTS have a stack of music , I imagine you might plan on watching just the official music videos from BTS. So this means you’ll see the title track and the follow up single from each album. Whilst it is great you’re doing this it might be a little misleading for you. It will lead you to think that BTS’s music style evolved later than it did plus you’ll be missing out on the b-side gems.
For example if you just do We Are Bulletproof part 2 and No More Dream you’d think BTS’s sound is rap & hip hop heavy. The best b-side off their debut album (IMHO) is Like - it’s got more of a pop R&B feel, still rap heavy but it’s a more melodic rap. The song’s topic is great too. In it the 3 rappers discuss a situation where they see a post on social media from their ex - will they ‘like’ the post? You get 3 different viewpoints. As there’s no MV I recommend a live version - there’s one from 2017 I think it’s on Mnet or M Countdown and BTS are delightfully flirty in the performance. I remember vividly your reaction to Blood Sweat & Tears so I really would like to see how you cope with their flirting in Like.

I don't think that's true about BTS being the first in k-pop to use rap or hip-hop. DIdn't Seo Taiji, a.k.a. The Grandfather of Kpop, incorporate rap and hip-hop into his music? And I used to listen to Big Bang before BTS debuted -- they have two rappers in the group. I think rap/hip-hop elements have always been a part of kpop! BTS were very hip-hop heavy at first, though, at a time when not a lot of other groups were leaning into that genre, so maybe that's what you meant?

    • @Melllllody
      @Melllllody Před 8 dny

BTS were definitely not the first to use rap or hip-hop in k-pop! Like @banje72 said, Seo Taiji incorporated them into his music. BTS did a cover of his song "Come Back Home" which is a perfect example! Plenty of first gen idol groups had a rapper, like H.O.T or Sechskies. Or Jinusean, a first gen hip-hop duo. BTS was initially supposed to be a hip-hop group, they told Suga they were making a group just like k-pop/hip-hop group 1TYM.
Second gen groups continued the trend of having at least one rapper. Shinee and BigBang are probably the most well known examples, but even the girl groups had rappers, which was far less common during the first gen! 2NE1, f(x), SNSD, KARA, and Wonder Girls all had rappers. Block B was a hip-hop group that debuted at the very end of second gen (2011). Their leader Zico came from underground rap just like RM and Suga!
