  • All cars are built to understeer as you approach the limits of grip. This video quickly outlines what you can do to correct for understeer in any vehicle using the same technique regardless of what car or truck you might be driving. This is equally relevant for driving on pavement, dirt roads, or winter driving. The basic physics of using weight transfer to help a car turn are universal, and can be practiced in all vehicles on all surfaces. For more information on the rally school visit:

      @@nickamarit Obviously... If the car isn't going at the point you want to go, something is wrong. If the front wheels doesn't grip, it's the same if the rear is slidding too... Your racing line will be more open that you want and the car probably not response to the steering wheels.
      Anyways, when the front wheels are slidding you should be weight transfer to recovery grip.

Keep up the good work and if possible i would love to see longer videos with higher level driving tehniques like that one when you explained rally driving. I know everyone here is going to think I'm FOS with the comment, but I swear it's the truth. Back in the mid-90's I was driving my "new to me" Jeep Cherokee. It had just started to rain, and I was driving a little fast in the Mtns on NC. I go around a right hand turn and the back end starts to come around. No big deal, I start to chase the car and as I do I start to drifting into the other lane. It was a right with about 100 yards of straight and then a left. When I was about 2/3's the way in the other lane, another car appears from around the left hand turn. Uh oh.
    I then, as clear as he was in the seat next to me, remember the salesman telling me, "You can engage 4wd at any legal speed." I calmly reached down, pulled up the handle that engaged 4wd, put it in 4 high and stood on the accelerator. The front wheels engaged and pulled me back across into my lane.
    The old man driving the other car was as white as a sheet when I went past him...

    Hi guys just popped up on my feed, I know I’m a little late. Really good video, definitely a valuable technique, my only concern would be if someone without experience tries this and is too aggressive with the brake and timing wouldn’t they tend to get lift off oversteer? Granted ideally they would practice a little in a field, parking lot when it snows, or some other controlled environment. Even better take an advanced driving course like the “in control” drivers training program or one of the programs you offer (I’ll get up there eventually, I swear). But I wonder if this could go wrong for someone? Granted I’m not a driving instructor and only have a slightly better than average experience with the in control program and some rally-x so I’m not exactly an expert on vehicle dynamics, so I could be completely off base but that was my thought.

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  Před 5 lety +2

      You're absolutely correct, if you transfer too much weight onto the front, you'll get more oversteer... But that's a really big piece of the puzzle if you're getting into rally or any kind of racing. Watch some WRC video and you'll see that's 90% of what they're doing... Braking before, during, and/or after turn-in to push the nose down and make it turn, then countersteering and accelerating hard to dig the rear tires in and stop the slide on the way out. If you do it gently and carefully, you can cure potential understeer... Agressively like you're saying and you create oversteer. As you mentioned, this could DEFINITELY go wrong for someone as they are learning to do it, that's why our school has grown so much over the past few years. If anyone is learning this stuff on their own, we ALWAYS suggest the gravel parking lot approach, rallyx, always starting in a safe place with plenty of room for error.

      1: Look for a used rally car, make sure it's legal to run and reliable. specialstage.com and there are FB rally classified groups.
      2: Take that rally car to rallycross, hillclimb, track day, whatever is cheap testing and practice in the car so you're comfortable and confident.
      3: Whatever is the closest rally to your house, just go do it, regardless of what series. You can get your license online, suit and helmet etc.
      4: Try like hell to just finish that rally, don't try to win, just try to get to the end.
      5: If you're still into it, keep going. If not, you can usually re-sell the car for what you bought it for unless you destroyed it.
      6: At some point come see us. Shameless plug, but we can get you a lot faster and safer in a hurry. You can try all different cars, no damage costs, it's a lot of fun.

    Fwd just steer more into the corner and rug it. The wheels will spin up and pull the car through. Or steer the car into the corner with the same gas, lift for a second, the back end will slide out a little, then back on the throttle hard, pulls through. That's probably wrong it's the way I've done it on back roads

    • @InitialDIYmods
      @InitialDIYmods Před 6 lety +1

      Steering more into the corner doesn't help reduce understeer. Once the tires start sliding at one angle, more angle doesn't fix it. You can only use a tire for so much grip and sliding friction is less than static friction. The loose surface is a combination but you'll find that by transferring the weight forward, you'll get more grip to turn (like in trail braking) or by decreasing your turn angle to regain some grip allowing you to steering more. On a loose surface, shifting the weight would work better.
      The only reason turning more worked in your case is probably because the understeer slowed the car down which shifted some extra weight forward. Trail braking would have worked better ;-)

      Or you could heel toe if you are smooth and comfortable with it. Only really matters if you're a manual and even then it only matters if you plan to clutch shift entering the turn or pulling out of the turn. Not really advisable to shift mid turn unless you really know what you are doing and plan to utilize the weight transfer associated with the disengaging/reengaging of the transmission

    • @mannyechaluce3814

    I have a very silly question, it would be great if someone would answer it. Doesn’t braking or lifting mid corner induce snap oversteer? What is the best thing to do if you go into a corner too hot and you underteer? Is it better just to try and guide the car back on path just coasting how you are, or lifting off and causing liftoff oversteer, or is there a small amount of room for finesse to get yourself out ?

    • @Teamoneilrally
      @Teamoneilrally  Před 6 lety +1

      If you go in a little too hot and get some understeer, you may have to lift and/or brake to help it turn just try to do it smoothly and gradually that's all. You just want to get a little weight on the front to help it turn, if you lift completely and/or stab the brakes all herky-jerky you risk snap oversteer for sure.

    If you delete the front sway bar, that is going to help reduce the factory induced understeer, right?

    • @Taznar
      @Taznar Před 6 lety +7

      MDS Racing lol yeah if you have a heavy/high rollover rate car dont try that, sway bar bolt broke on my Chevy Blazer so I still drove it for a while till I decided to get a new bolt for it. Driving fast on gravel around a long sweeping turn, a turn I had made at the same speed a bunch of times in different vehicles and the Blazer before the sway bar got screwed up, hit the turn and all the body weight practicality flew to one side and sent me sliding, tried giving it slight gas and correcting but there wasn't much I could do. Plowed into a tree. I now have a red door up front and no glass on the back door. Good times.

      MDS Racing Add or stiffen rear anti-roll bar. Relative roll stiffness (front/rear) is one large contributor to final steady-state balance. This demonstration, though, doesn't really care about steady-state balance; it shows the common cure for entering a slick turn too fast--this is all transition, scarcely a second or two of steady-state.

    • @mertduraman5014
      @mertduraman5014 Před 6 lety

      As far as I know. Rear sway bar induces under steer. Not the front one. To reduce understeer I think you either remove the rear sway bar or fit a stiffer front sb

    • @ArchOfficial
      @ArchOfficial Před 6 lety +1

      Wrong in most cases, you got it the other way around. Some cars, for example ones that have MacPherson in the front might grip up better with a stiffer rollbar in the front, and some cars might grip better in the rear with a stiffer rear rollbar, but if the suspension is working normally, more front rollbar should induce understeer and more rear rollbar should induce oversteer in steady state.

    On wet roads going into a actual street corner with cars parked up and down the street your screwed, by the time you realize the understeer your “save” is gonna send you into a parked car. I’m gonna bet on the curb to stop me at that point.

  • @dkphantomdk
    @dkphantomdk Před 5 lety +1

    OH come on..
    the speed is the factor that makes the car go wide.
    now, braking a bit will make it corner better..
    OFCOURSE.. the speed is lower than before and the car will make it..
    Just go sideways and then FLOOR it on the impreza, the awd system will give you more "grip" and you can do the corner at higher speed..
    there is a reason why rally cars do sideways in corners on gravel, rather than doing a raceline from trackracing !
    it is all about the speed and the corner you have to go into, what matters is the "friction" on the surface, it has to overcome the force of the speed to make the car leave its "straight line" and do the corner.. Flooring the impreza in a corner being sideways, you put more friction on the ground and the car will do the corner..

      bottom line move the weight forward so you can steer, hauling @$$ in the turn makes your front end light that you can't steer hence the car is not going where one wants it, slowing down on the turn causes weight to shift forward where the primary steering tires are located

  • @mannyechaluce3814
