  • In 1993 Holyfield was set to rematch Riddick Big Daddy Bowe in an attempt to take his championship back. Little did either man know that the epic battle would turn into one of the most shocking incidents in boxing, or even in sports, history.

    Holyfield never seemed as invincible as some heavyweights during their prime like Mike Tyson, George Foreman or Muhammed Ali, but he could never be counted out and he had a chance at beating any boxer with will and skill.
    Holmes, Tyson, Foreman, Bowe, Moorer, Mercer, Douglas and more, there were losses, draws and various helping circumstances, but in the end his collection of victories is insane.

    • @donavonhoward114
      @donavonhoward114 Před 10 měsíci +13

      Holyfield wasn't the most powerful (although he was a KO machine), and he wasn't the biggest man of those heavyweight's you just mentioned in your comment, but Holyfield was a better boxer than both Tyson, and Foreman. Holyfield was as skilled as any boxer in heavyweight history, and he also had one of the greatest chins in boxing history. I also don't think Holyfield gets enough credit for his defensive accumen. A part of why his chin was so great was because he rarely got hit clean in most of his fights. Holyfield could glide around the ring picking his opponents apart, and he could fight an ugly fight when he had to do it. In order to beat Holyfield, you had to have a decent reach advantage, a great accurate jab, good timing, a good chin, and great cardio. Very few fighters have all of those strengths. Bowe, Lennox, Foreman, and Holmes all had those traits, yet Holyfield still beat 3 out of 4 of those guys, and every one of those matchups ended up being great epic fights.

    Riddick Bowe at his peak was an excellent fundamental boxer, had a great chin, power in both hands, could fight inside or out, and would have been a difficult test for any fighter who ever lived. Historical trainer Eddie Futch said, "Riddick had more untapped potential than any fighter he had ever known." This is easily one of my top 5 favorite heavyweight fights. I actually love this fight more than the first, and third fights between Holyfield, and Bowe. This fight was a technical marvel to watch as a viewer. Both guys had become very familiar with each other stemming from their first matchup, so they both changed their tactics a bit, but still were willing to go toe to toe at times to earn each others respect, and stay physical to a point, but they executed on the inside a lot more intelligently this time around. I think the first fight was a shock for both guys coming right out of the gate, so they ended up fighting a war because both of them got rocked early, and both were throwing major heat after the opening bell (similar to the Hagler/Hearns fight), and both guys were desperate to stay in the fight, and end it. In this second fight, both guys knew exactly what they had to do to beat each other, and they knew not to try to chase a KO victory. Holyfield just executed his gameplan a little bit better than Bowe in this fight, but Bowe still fought like a great champion. It was such a close fight.

    Interestingly, the fight was a Majority Decision for Holyfield by the narrowest margin possible, with the 7th round being the most controversial aspect--mostly because James Miller (a.k.a. Idiot with a parachute) probably changed the course of heavyweight title history. Chuck Giampa had it 114-114 (giving the 7th to Bowe). Patricia Morse Jarmen had it 114-115 for Holyfield (7th round even). Jerry Roth had it 113-115 (and gave the 7th to Holyfield). If either of those two judges who scored it for Holyfield had given that round to Bowe, the fight would have been a draw, Bowe keeping the lineal championship.
    Watch the 7th round in real time and you tell me how the hell you score that round. Evander was my favorite fighter growing up, so I won't complain. That said, if ANY round in boxing ever deserved to be a 10-10 even round, it was Round 7 of this fight. If all three had scored it Even, then Holyfield would have won a Unanimous Decision. But, you could make a case for Bowe winning the round, absolutely, and that would have made it a Majority Draw, Bowe keeping the title.
    The third fight was entertaining but clearly anti-climactic. Both of the first two fights were for the lineal championship between two evenly matched warriors, obviously the best two in the world (Tyson in the pokey), who never backed down. You make it sound like Holyfield won the first rounds, but actually after three rounds, Holyfield had only been given one of the nine scored rounds. He showed the heart of a lion to claw back.
    It belongs on the Mt. Rushmore for greatest heavyweight rivalries, or trilogies. Both men left parts of their souls embedded on their opponents' knuckles.
    (Source: I encourage all of you to watch HBO's Legendary Nights documentary on the trilogy.)

    I started martial arts to learn how to protect myself I tried all martial arts at my disposal over the years but learned that I couldn’t take any punishment to the head, I always ended up fainting for unknown reasons. But still wanted to train so I persevere. Now I’m 54 years of age and not so quick or agile I can’t kick or runaway. I figure my best chance now is to cover up find an attachment and try to survive. Whatever happens after that I don’t know

    Watching these old classics makes me realize what a bad era of heavyweight boxing we're in now 😂the only heavyweight of today that moves like these guys in the modern era is Oleksandr Usyk and sadly he isn't being given the super fights that someone like fury, joshua or wilder would have gotten if they were nearly undisputed champs holding 3 belts

    Watching these guys fight makes ppl like Anthony Joshua, Tysons fury Deontay wilder and Andy Ruiz look like they have shit technique. I mean the beautiful slips and duck unders, the beautiful timed punch block counter with the same hand, just top notch in term of technicality.

    Riddick bowe is taller but i wouldnt say hes the bigger man here. look at the size of holyfield's torso vs Bowe's. they both have strange proportions but that's typical for professional athletes at the very top.

    If Bowe was generally disciplined, he could have killed everyone in that era for a longer period,except Lewis.The Lion was very intelligent, but he would have had for sure many difficulties.
    And we hear clowns hear and there talking about Tyson .Those guys were the real killers.If Bowe have met Tyson on ring,he would had eaten Tyson alive.

    Please do Holyfield's game plan in his fight(s) with Tyson. There are just too many sheep fans that actually think The Real Deal spent the entire fight holding and headbutting his way to victory.

    • @SKa-tt9nm
      @SKa-tt9nm Před 10 měsíci

      I’ve been watching boxing for 30+ years. Evander Holyfield is one of the most skilled, complete fighters I’ve ever seen. His strategy for the Tyson fight consisted of willingly fighting Tyson inside (much to everyone’s surprise), holding when advisable, juicing himself in enough HGH to kill a small horse and head-butting with impunity.
      Now, to be fair I will say that post-prison Tyson’s tendency to come in wildly, trying to set up an overhand right (instead of the pre-prison picaboo head movement to set up hooks and uppercuts) greatly aided holy in this endeavor. But anybody who knows boxing knows that the boxer who used to wear trunks that said “HEAD” on them was a dirty fighter and maybe the most notorious headbutter in boxing history.
      Skilled? Yes. Full of determination? Most definitely. Dirty? Absolutely. That’s Holyfield.

      @@SKa-tt9nmboth fighters were pretty dirty although up until the ear bite in the rematch holyfield was dirtier although Tysons tendency to catch fighters with his elbow during hooks was pretty bad too
