  • Students in Milton Hershey School’s world cultures classes recently studied conflict; what it is, why it occurs, and how to resolve it. They examined ancient and modern-day examples, developing skills to analyze and synthesize what occurred in the past, or is occurring in the world today. The students were asked to select a modern-day conflict which interests them, research the facts, evaluate the situation from various perspectives, and create a presentation on their findings. World cultures teacher Matt Edris says it’s also an exercise which encourages students to be critical of their own ways of thinking, asking themselves, “… am I being fair to other people? Am I trying to turn this into a win-win situation, as opposed to a win-lose situation?” This unit is a valuable lesson in history and global awareness for MHS students, as well as a unique way for them to develop strength of character when approaching challenges in their own lives.
