Thanks so much for this insight. Ever since I was a kid, I have been fascinated with BBC television production, especially BBC NEWS; the galleries, the (great) BBC titles run, the split second timing. I need a new job!

@@deejayC It's very useful to get gallery talkback from the main control room at BBC Broadcasting House in London as it helps the regional directors know when to opt-out into the regional symbol

When it first started the studio and gallery for the Oxford opt were both in Southampton. The presenter moved to Radio Oxford reception in 2004, but the gallery operation remained in Southampton. Since 2005 though, a studio and gallery were opened in Oxford and since then it has all come from Oxford.
I was wondering do you monitor BBC Two as well or just BBC One?
Where are all the nations and regions news studios and gallery's located? Is it all in London?
no - each region’s gallery and studio is located in the region it serves.

because bbc london news is now presented from the same studio as bbc news at 6 and 10 does that mean that the gallery responsbile for bbc london news is the same as the bbc 1 news
Interesting question. I don’t know the answer. But I believe any gallery can control any studio in the building, so it could be a different gallery.

Oh, one other question many months after the first one, is that a soft opt? Are you taking both network and Southampton through your mixer? You're a split region aren't you?

That entire opening is a prerecord?
yes, it's recorded shortly before going on air. It's a reasonably complex sequence and the first item the viewers will see so it's right that it's not a shambles :-)
U
