We begin the 50th anniversary year of the "Lamb lies down on Broadway" album by publishing the very first Genesis song on the Afterglow setlist. It startedi in 1977, 10 years before this band started working together. First sign of this song is a hand-written lead sheet, dated 1977.

september 1975, I heard a live recording (by BBC), of this song. All the ideas in the rhythmic part of this song are taken from that performance, I heard the album version a few months later, In my opinion, the album version is a little bit too fast, the tempo in the b- sections is too stable and does not breathe along with the lyrics. So there must have been some development in this song after the 1974 studio sessions.
