      Ellen Baxter oversees CMOA’s conservation program, and is responsible for the care and maintenance of the museum’s paintings, drawings, and works on paper. She has been working in the field for more than 30 years, and has been at CMOA since 1990.

    This woman is incredible and her attention to detail is astounding -- I wouldn't have thought to relate the frame to the painting itself in that way. But now that she's discussed it (very passionately!) in such a way, I believe I'll be viewing paintings not just in relation to the frame, but also with the frame as *part* of the painting. You really learn something new everyday!

    Considering the amount of damage prior to her restoration, she did an excellent job of redefining the jawline to a more visually appealing silouette. She did an excellent job in not oversojng the restoration.

    A beautifully done restoration. Miss Baxter seems to research the personalities behind the works she takes on. And keeps us enthralled!
    Over the centuries so much is lost and she fills in the damaged areas and the persons place in their world. BRAVA! Carnegie is fortunate to have her important work.

    Thanks Julian Baumgartner for teaching me what a fugitive pigment is, the experts don't explain! And I'd say that's a conservation rather than a restoration, her retouching is conservative, as you'd rightly expect from a museum.

      Contact a restoration group and discuss it. Depending on who painted it, and what was used, it may take little effort to clean. But you need an expert to let you know. The solvents they use are very special.

    I think I would've liked to have seen the piece stripped of any in-painting or repairs from before Ms Baxter actually started to re-in-paint the piece..and I can't really believe that this work was even talked about being deaccessioned.. (I probably would have not mentioned that..)

    • @austind3459
      @austind3459 Před 6 lety +3

      I say this because I think the end result, her chin and neck are a little too defined for my tastes..Reynold's shadows are usually very soft and vibrate a little bit; there isn't ever a strong line; the line between the chin and neckline is too dark and pronounced..every Reynold's piece I have looked at; it is almost like an airbrush finish..

    • @candacebuck61

    • @breico8535

      elebecepe Mezzotint. She is referring to the black and white print. The medium used to create the print is mezzotint, an intaglio technique.

    • @lazygardens
      @lazygardens Před 5 lety +5

      Mezzotint. It's the antique version of a photocopier. Slower, of course.
      Artists would have a skilled engraver make copies of their works and sell them or give them away.
      Or the owner would have engravings done and send them to friends and family
      Or someone would have a series of paintings done on a certain subject, have engravings made, and sell them in a book or as a collection of loose prints.
