- As a state champion, Marek Bush has little competition. But when he faced a fierce component who got injured, he decided winning wasn't important. Steve Hartman has their story "On The Road."

Wow. You've won sir.
He was raised right. Kudos to his parents/Dad. What powerful show of sportsmanship.
He's a product of great parenting and coaching, and his humility proves that his actions were genuine. What a great feel-good story. 👍
Speedstack21 I’m sorry, but I have to disagree with you here. I would never want someone to let me win a match...
shoe93 He was winning it was truly just because of the accident with his arm that he would’ve lost. It wasn’t pity it was simply the course the match would’ve taken had his arm not been injured.
@@shoe9331 I agree, teaches people they can get a free ride...

My young man you DID NOT show weakness...you showed........ Humanity.
OtherwiSe known as the 'Bruk' no it’s not, they are different
Well said
Humanity is not as kind as this young man.
I don't know if I would say Humanity, more like he's a true Sportsman. He knew he was losing and he didn't want to win like that. What a man!
Toughest kid there. He gave away his dream for sportsmanship, that was tougher than winning.
True sportsmanship. This young man will go,far in life. A breath of fresh air nowadays. Thanks
I admire what he did and seeing the referee and his dad tear up just talking about it really make me choke up too... But the real State Champion deserves some credit too! I mean wow, he went back in there with a broken elbow and still went on with the match like a real champ! WOW! Both young men deserves to get credit...👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻
No. The injured kid should have withdrawn, or his coach should have made him withdraw. He could not wrestle. Match over. Such is life. No shame on anybody
@@gkprivate433 Totally agree.
@@gkprivate433 I think he went in there to take his defeat like a man. His elbow was his problem, not his opponent's. But then he got the shock of his life.

Pure class. Probably gets it from his parents. In a world of selfish and self centered people we can all take a lesson from this young man.
Super Villain I would never want someone to let me win..
Nah real men don’t give up and surrender that easy. Everything is worth fighting for.
Lag Israel nah real men don’t beat up cripples. That’s what scrubs do.
Lag Israel and real man beat crippled or the injured right?
Super Villain what would you remember more? That win you got after a guy was injured, on top of other wins and future ones or that one time you let a guy win because it was a great fight and he was winning until his elbow was reversed🤔
This made me tear up. As a wrestling fan for 40 years, I've seen an awful lot go down at tournaments, not all of them so good, especially as the generations changed and it became more about pure winning instead of sportsmanship and having fun. And this amazes me! Weak? No kid; you're not weak. You have the strength of David and Samson combined! It takes a strong man to do the right thing! And so went a good deed in an unjust world. And I think God in his Heaven smiled just a bit that day!
Beautiful comment

Made me cry…what an amazing young man! Every parent should be this lucky!! No weakling here…just an awesome young man, who taught us all a wonderful life lesson!!
A class act through and through. Props to his parents for raising a great man. Hopefully he will go far in life.
I watched this young man since he was in 4th grade while I was in 9th. His father was our coach my entire career. Both his son's have grown into such fine young men. I was at this tournament to see it live. Though I never knew it made national headlines. I was not surprised to see him do this because of the amazing character Marek is. Makes me feel old at only 23 years old to think he's a senior now. Mr. Bush did such a good job with all of us. We won with honor and lost with it as well. So proud of this young man. On or off the mat, he'll succeed
Maybe it’s just my pride but I would hate if someone just let me win. I feel like it’s belittling.
It's a terrible thing, to let a man win.
It sounded like the injured kid was on the way to victory (up in points, 30 seconds remaining). I agree with you about letting someone win if its a close match, but if it was almost over until a freak accident, then I think its a whole nother issue.
Marek was already going to be given the win. *Logan wasn't going to be allowed to finish the match.* Marek didn't want to win the match that way because Logan was winning and was going to win the match anyway (as per Marek). So it was either take the win ONLY because of a technicality (or fluke injury) and not because he earned it, OR give the win to the better wrestler that day, which was Logan. Marek decided honor and integrity were more important than having another "W" on his record.
@@freddy4130 Thats why you aren't a wrestler. I had it drilled into my head as a young kid, by some of the very best coaches to always do the right thing. I coached New England Champions as kids and even Nationally ranked kids. They all knew that doing the right thing was the right choice. Two of them are now Navy seal instructors and incredible human beings, husbands, fathers and friends.
@@glennanderson4554 ... Yes SIRRR! My thoughts exactly 😎🚬
This reminded me of a John Wayne quote: "Courage is being scared to death but saddling up anyway". Way to go Merrick. You did the right thing and you did not look like a weakling. It actually takes someone very strong to do what you did.
I am a huge fan of John Wayne and his pictures.
Why am I crying? This young man is truly special, destined for greatness!
This world needs more just like him and his dad.
Much respect! That’s true sportsmanship
No, no respect and no sportsmanship. It may surprise those of everyone gets a trophy generation, but that was completely self-serving, disrespectful and dishonorable. He robbed the other kid of his dignity and pride as an athlete, by putting on a pitty display. A 'sportsman' would've had the respect to stand up and say Im not going to fight an injured opponent. Instead, he used the other kid to signal his virtue.
@@springbloom5940 I agree with you. However, I think the kid intended to do the right thing. He just made a bad decision. As his parent, I would tell him that I am proud of his intention, and then tell him to NEVER DO THAT AGAIN!
@@joeyasro8785
At that competitive level, he knows better. I think he did exactly what he intended. He was faced with defeating a downed opponent and being criticized for it, but he couldn't just man up and forfeit, so he decided to have it both ways and claim a glorious win, from taking a dive.
@@springbloom5940 I just found out below that he was losing 5-0 with 30 seconds. So that makes his motives significantly less admirable. No way he was going to win. given this new info, your analysis is more feasible. However, he is a wrestler and a state champ, so I want to give him the benefit of the doubt, and not question his motives.
As for the media company, they clearly do not have a grasp on moral right and wrong.
@Spring WRONG! You should know the facts before passing judgment. Logan wasn't going to be allowed to finish the match. Marek was already going to be given the win. Marek didn't want to win the match that way because Logan was winning and was going to win the match anyway (as per Marek). So it was either take the win ONLY because of a technicality (or fluke injury) and not because he earned it, OR give the win to the better wrestler that day, which was Logan. Marek wasn't given the option to continue to wrestle Logan. Marek decided honor and integrity were more important than having another "W" on his record.
My hat is off to this young man! I am a former high school wrestler and to see a young man at this level chose to do such an amazing thing is truly honorable. I have seen boys choose to do the opposite and take advantage of a situation but this young "man" will be an inspiration to others for the rest of his life! Keep it up Marek and there is nothing that can stand in your way!
How do they let a kid with a dislocated arm continue, that is negligent and could cause much worse injury.
I think they were expecting him to concede but the kid was stupid and insisted on continuing and somehow Marek did the honourable thing and his opponent instead of being honourable and accepting it simply wasnt his day decided to take the W and walk off.
@@teekay851 that's what the referee is there for. it's his job to stop the match.
i agree match should of been stopped
I sweat bleed and train way too much to go wrestle and let a dislocated elbow stop me from wrestling he probably feels the same
Damn ...old dude was bout to cry ........his dad is amazing good job
The coach is his father. He's a good coach and teacher.
His character is undeniable....amazing young man.
That old chestnut "Sport doesn't build character, it reveals it" is definitely at play with this young guy.
The concepts are not mutually exclusive, and I'd say both are on display in this case.
Those parents raised a great young man. Wonderful video. Wish the news covered more things like this.
Marek, you are not only NOT a weakling, you ARE a REAL man. I have been called a hero (which I've never been comfortable with) as a result of some combat situations, so I get it. You truly understand what it means to do the right thing. Not only that--You stood behind your conviction, to the detriment of your own well-being. The world needs more like you, Sir. Best to you, my friend.
Love that his father can see the real thing and was proud of him. Integrity over a win any day

Not a weakling at all. Probably one of the most decent and honorable kids around today. Way to go, young man. You rock!
As a former high school wrestler,on a team that won the state championship, this is one of the CLASSIEST THINGS I HAVE EVER SEEN.......KUDOS TO YOU YOUNG MAN...
Exercise in semantics probably: your title: he didn't "surrender" (he didn't let himself get pinned), he just didn't continue the fight since his opponent couldn't either. Whatever the score was when the other kids arm dislocated, that was the final score. Great job kid! Great job parents.
God bless this young man. He already knows winning is not all that is important. He has compassion. So many adults lack the character this young man has.
Bless his parents for raising such a strong and compassionate young man.
That's the epitome of sportsmanship right there. As a dad myself, I can relate to how his father felt. He raised one helluvah great person.
Showing heart is never weak and requires a strength only a few great people know of. You are the man. Arohanui
To those of you that say he should have crushed the injured opponent, the principal idea was that he had already won. The young man had already given everything he had an realized it wasn’t enough to win that day.
Maybe his opponent became injured because he overexerted himself. Had he paced himself just enough to not become injured, who's to say that he wouldn't have lost instead?
My son was a high school wrestler, a state placer, and the captain of his high school wrestling team. I've watched a lot of wrestling. Wrestling is about sportsmanship. Merrick demonstrated what the sport is all about and how this sport teaches young men to be good people. Respect to Merrick.

Jesus wanted to let you know that he loves you so much!!! If you don’t know him, nor have accepted him as your personal Lord and Saviour, he’s knocking on your heart, freely giving you rest and eternal life in his kingdom.. Jesus said “I am the way, the truth, and the life.” He came down here to die for you, so that you could live, and have access to the Father , and his kingdom ( heaven..) on the third day of Jesus’s death, God the Father raised Jesus Christ from the dead, and Jesus is alive forevermore, sitting at the right hand of the Father, (GOD)!!! This young man had great parents, great coaches, great upbringing…great spirit. My dad was a college wrestling champ, and I wish he was still here to see this young man, shake his dad’s hand and congratulate him and the mom for a job well done.
It’s not weakness to let someone win that way. That’s human kindness
I wrestled in hs, and though is a heart warming story...If I were the kid that won, I would have felt like crap accepting the win...I know alot of people won't understand that, but some who wrestled will....
adam glover I also wrestled in hs but I would be mad if I didn’t win, in this case I mean. Yes I would understand if I was just handed the win but this situation was not like that at all. He was winning and an injury that imo should have stopped the match happened I’d be upset that I’d lose. So I see what you’re saying and I agree on most situations but I think this one is a little different
Wrestling is a competitive sport. And like all competitive sports, if you're handed a free win it never feels great, but think of the other side. Merick was handed a free win and he refused it. Logan, who was winning was given the win out of respect for being ahead. It may not be the win he imagined but it was still a well deserved one.
I wrestled and played football in HS. Now as a 42 YO man I understand that this kids example is more rewarding than a win. But everyone has their own opinion on the matter and they are entitled to it. God convicted his heart to be compassionate and Marek sacrificed his own glory to allow another competitor to shine. Look what happened in the end…Mareks story made the news for it so it was the right decision.
Kid was up 5-0 when he got injured with 30 seconds left.
He was winning already tho.

I’m crying that was an act of compassion God bless you
the mark of a true champion isn't just how you play the game, but how you treat your opponent
Exactly why this kid is an idiot. Why would he not continue and take advantage of the injury. If the other guy wanted to surrender he could surrender. You should never go easy on someone because you think they are weak or because you pity them.

He shouldn't have let the injured kid win, and the injured kid shouldn't have taken that pity win. The right thing here would have been to stop the match; continuing the match w one of them injured is both unfair and potentially even worse for the injury.
Most of the time, wrestling wont let you just stop. My friend used to wrestle(came from a school that was basically only good at wrestling) and he accidentally broke his opponent's nose at state.
