5 reasons why Retro - Is the PSVR 2 in trouble (2024)

  • A couple of years ago I made some Subtle suggestions as to why I thought the #psvr2 might end up going the way of the dinosaurs.
    Now that the Headset has been out for over a year and I was wanting to get things rolling again over here on 5 Reasons why, it felt prudent that I check my own work and have a look at exactly where the PSVR2 and #sony sit within the VR landscape.
    With rival more headsets than ever on the market and both Meta and Potentially Apple breathing down their neck could the mention of PSVR2 PC compatibility be enough to save this headset or are we heading toward the PSVR2 being #discontinued .

    If youre looking at the competition, with stand alone, Meta have less than a handful of optimized games for the Quest 3 primarily for pass through gaming. They have also stated no more quest 2 games, with that headset outselling the later over 3 to 1. If you are talking about pc gaming with it you'll have to include the cost of the base system, and at wireless you'll be needing a high end tower.

      I think it will be interesting to see the numbers once it’s working, just how many pc users go that route and if there needs to be any work done to get pcvr games running. Meta does somewhat bully the devs into compliance which is a shame.

    So when you say that PSVR2 will stop getting support sometime in the future, do you mean like the Meta Quest 2 is going to end support as well? Of course all devices will stop getting support at some point in the future.
    My guess for why all of the negative PSVR2 propaganda is due to Meta not selling their Quest 3 as much as they hoped. So instead of fixing broken things with the quest 3 (like no eye tracking which means no dynamic foveated rending which means potato graphics), Meta just attacks Sony making the general public think its a dead product trying to push sales to the inferior Quest 3.

    • @5reasonswhy953
      @5reasonswhy953  Před 26 dny

      It’s a strange one as they almost shouldn’t be direct competition. I personally think metas biggest advantage right now is cost. Unless you have already used a vr headset, you likely won’t care or know to care about things like eye tracking so as an entry point to the unknown I think the quest 3 wins every time.
      I really hope they don’t stop supporting it anytime soon but they really need to pull thumb, I think there are maybe 2 other exclusive games on their way right now so they gotta do better.
      I’m also salty they let firewall zero hour die and I partially blame their pressure on the devs to include eye tracking in the game 😂 the usual new gen console tech demo sacrifice

    • @ShiYuMeng2
      @ShiYuMeng2 Před 26 dny +2

      @@5reasonswhy953 People do care about graphics though. Eye tracking w/ Dynamic Foveated Rendering means the graphics will be MUCH better.
      Quest 3 has some major problems on the gaming side which is why they are pushing extremly hard on the phone replacement side. Instead of eye tracking, they went with hand tracking which is pretty useless for VR Gaming but is NEEDED for phone replacement.
      Also, Meta went with a fantastic passthrough again not needed for gaming at all but NEEDED for phone replacement.
      You see where this is going right?
      The are many problems with Quest 3. Latency and Compression on PC Link are terrible. But Quest would NEVER want to actually have a direct connection from PC to Quest b/c they want you in their phone replacement.
      So if you buy a quest, you will forever have latency and compression problems - but it would be against their business model to make that go away (IE a direct connection to PC).
      It is true people are ignorant of technology and will go with whatever the media is pushing (hence why there is this anti-sony anti-PSVR2 propaganda). Because PSVR2 is the better headset so Meta has to spend some of their billions they are losing every month on anti-PSVR2 propaganda.
      Just don't fall for it man. Be smarter than Meta.

      @@ShiYuMeng2 I am impartial mate, I want them both to do well. Meta very much want VR/XR market dominance because they think they probably think if they can write the rules they can control the revenue streams down the line. I think in the last couple of weeks they have come out offering up their own OS to other companies for use in VR.
      I really want Sony to do well because the headset is good, the exclusives are probably some of the best VR games on the market but I don’t know if that will be enough.
      I don’t drink the kool aid mate, I’m just analysing what I see and hear. Literally my day job.

      @@5reasonswhy953 That is great. You would then know that Sony hasn't abonded their VR Headsets and is still supporting their product. You will also know that one of Sony's new CEO's was the head of technology where the PSVR2 was under his leadership. Could that result in Sony increasing their investment in PSVR2?
      I just think it is important to counter or at least identify when there is meta propaganda against sony.
      Like claims about Sony ending support is 100% unfounded. But you will see heaps of news article and YT videos were people claim Sony stopped support or 'might' stop support.
      As someone where this is your job, you should understand this and help to dispell what is propaganda and what is fact.

      @@ShiYuMeng2 Its really hard with large corporations to ever get a real read on what is happening at the top. Both Microsoft and Sony are up to their necks in it at the moment in terms of annoying their player base, mostly that outside of the VR space. I expect sony to give this another good nudge, I think the PC move is unknown territory for them so it could go either way.
      Honestly its just really interesting to see this all play out. Meta is no golden child and ill be focusing on that once I get round to my next video. Just as guilty of putting profits first and pretending they dont while most of their inhouse software is either unavailable or just kind of crap. I hope we see a healthy competition in this space, just to keep pushing things along.

      So that means you have the gaming side and social/ business side market wise. Meta has market share across gaming and there will be business money available if they can compete with apple on the other front.
      The market itself isn’t fully developed in the vr space which makes it quite exciting.
