  • The Ampeg AC-12 is a rare amp, and rare amps make their way on to not-so-rare recordings.
As music was changing in the early 70s, amp manufacturers were still holding onto the past. This AC-12 was made for accordion use while the sister amp, the GU-12, was being used by the Rolling Stones on Exile on Main Street.

Ampeg was so much different than other amplifier companies ,I havea 1970-71 Vt22 V4 that I bought for $100 back in 82 or so ,Great Monster of a amp very clean ,I had it gone thought in 2006 it was costly but I think it was worth it and dont use it much but the reverb is unlike any other amp I have ever owned or played

Nice, thanks. Interesting, the difference between the two amps. I was waiting, though, to hear it without the 68k FB resistor.

You read my mind, thanks! (Stating differences in AC-12 to GU-12)

Thanks, that was interesting and gave me better knowledge of Valve. Cool.

I own a 1965 Ampeg J12 D. It has the same power tubes I think but the preamps are 6bk11. I have a complete set of new tubes for this am but the preamps are 6c10 as the bk11 are really scarce.
The tone is clean with minimal break up all the way to 7. At this point it really doesnt get louder. It takes overdrive pedals well. I like these and run it beside my 68 Princeton. The Princeton however seems way louder. Also my 74 Champ sounds similar to it.

I have this amp but I’d love to see you try the feedback resistor mod to get an idea if it would improve the sound. I’d also looked to see if it could be made switched so you can get both sounds without permanently changing the original.

Those compactron tubes are mad expensive on ebay. I bought an Ampeg power transformer basically on a whim because it was only 15 dollars. I think it came out of a J12D.

I just picked one of these up for $25 at a flea market. The fuse holder is missing so no idea if it works until I get that replaced.

I've worked on a few Ampegs. Their construction is really good, very rugged and roadworthy. But I can see why this amp wasn't a huge seller. Or more properly, I can HEAR why. It's nothing to rave about. That reverb/tremolo makes you lose your own sound in it.

I bet it has to do with Lindens Polish population and polka.
