  • On the bench is a 1966 Ampeg B-15N. Apparently this amplifier has a pretty long history and was allegedly part of the original SNL backline. In the video I talk about the history of the B-15 and my own theory as to some of the inspiration for this iconic amplifier.

I have a B-15 with solid state rectification and B-18. Both need work. Thank you for this video! Subscribed because anyone with a Tram and a Sonar on their bench is worth subscribing to.

Love the History of this amp and Mr Fairchild ,and looking forward to more stories of the Ampeg Cpmpany ,they used some unusual tubes as well like the 6K11 tube which I was lucky to find recently from a guy ,I have a old Superior InstrumentsTube tester but couldnt find any info on this tube to test it so I just got lucky and found a NOS

Like the B-15, you are also an American treasure. Love your simple, elegant reservoir cap solution.

Great video! I love the B15n. I’ll have to send you pics of the complete overhaul I had to do on one a couple years ago after a filter cap exploded in a customers amp!

Great video Pat! These amps are simply the best. Love the high voltage cap trick. Thanks for the informative history too!!!

I had a 1961 B15 I got for $80 dead in 1991. The problem turned out to be a crack in one output tube base. After turning out the overhead light while having a look inside I could see arcing between pins inside the tube socket.

Cool, I just noticed the bassist for Seth Myers has a nice vintage B-15.

Do you have more details on the resistor(s) you added in your series caps you used to replace the stick of dynamite? Best I can figure it’s some sort of resistor ladder thing? Anyway just curious to learn how that works :)

Hi, I put a 150K 2W resistor across each cap. Now you have a total of 300K across the two caps. lots of amps have caps in series in power supply, Check some latter Ampeg Schematics to see!
