Do This Before Watching a TV Series to Learn English

English TV shows can be a great way to learn English, but did you know there are a few things you can do before you watch the show that will help you learn even more while watching, and make the show more understandable and enjoyable?
In this English lesson I'll show you seven things you should be before you even hit the play button. Each of these things will help you get ready to watch the show so that your mind is ready to absorb as much English as possible.

I watch your videos and can notice that your english is very clear for me in spite you are a native speaker. Plenty of bloggers on CZcams and moreover characters in movies are more difficult for understanding. My advice to all is to watch and hear different people, from different locations and with different accents to avoid addiction to one pace and manner of speaking. This allow you to understand more hues of english.

Hi Bob. Here in Brazil we have the habit of watching American movies with audio in English and subtitles in Brazilian Portuguese.
I already have a good understanding of English so I can tell when the subtitles don't say the same thing as the audio.

Hi Bob, thanks for today's lesson. I'm from Sri Lanka and watch all your video tutorials. One of the main problems that we face as non-native speakers is that we find it a bit difficult to understand some TV shows due to accent variations. Not all English accents are same. So, it's difficult to understand native speakers. However, Canadian English is clear and easy to understand. I know this because I am in the habit of listening to CBS news bulletins. To get used to native speakers it's essential to listen to more English.. In this video you have not recommended some easy-to-understand TV shows which we should watch to improve our English. So, please tell us a bit about that..

I would agree that the Canadian accent is rather clear, especially if you're watching our news. Our news anchors tend to speak very clearly. I think that's a great start. Another easy to understand English TV series is Anne with an E. Give it a try! 😎✈🕶

I do recommend reading screenplays of the films. That helps a lot since a screenplay has so many for a human life, action, reaction, dialogues, and of course description of human behavior.

Some of my friends said that we might watch the TV series "Friends" if we wanted to learn English through Netflix. Although "Friends" is a series of comedy, I pay my full attention on watching English subtitles.

Hello from Kazakhstan! Thank you very much for your tips, I think some of them are really useful. Sometimes I did the same, though I have never watch your videos before. For example, when I decided to watch Downtown Abbey, I started watching on my mother tongue, and then when I memorized the names of the main characters, I started watching in English. But when I read the summary of the episode, I sometimes felt I cheated on because it is much easier to read than to listen.
