Ash's descriptions of the upgrades alone make the video worthwhile. And after hearing potato so many times I want to actually put a potato on a flight stand and play a game with it.
Ah yes, X-wing. My first miniatures game and still one of my favorites. It's definitely had a rocky life cycle, but at its core is a fun time. 2nd edition had to happen because they came out with so many newer and better mechanics that they couldn't give to the older iconic ships. And now there's more changes but I think that's always good for a game. If it's getting attention, it's a good thing. We can always go back and play 1.0 or 2.0 if we wanted, nothing is taken away from us. The multiplayer stuff they came out with is great fun too. Aces High is a great way to introduce people to the game as they only have to worry about one ship and constantly get to respawn if they for instance fly themselves off the mat.
2.0 out of the box come with quick build cards. You don't have to know points. The website has the latest point values. (Which are all changing in 2.5)

Make it more complex and maybe a bunch of autists with no jobs and lots of time to burn will get hooked on it.
will say, that little trick on the maneuver doesn't actually work. It does impact your final position, and for larger ships its not an insignificant amount. It's almost a half boost worth of extra movement. Its sometimes hard to notice with a soft turn if you're not looking hard in the moment, but it can be very obvious is you do the "trick" with a hard turn. It didn't really impact the result of this game as the dice rolls really were not favoring scum and villainy (who gave the criminals loaded dice? is this meant to be karma?), but in a match that was more balanced results wise it could be the difference of being in or out of distance for something to happen.

Love all the Star Wars content lately, but they've just changed the game in major ways. Now it's 20 point squads and it's objective based
This must be difficult for a man who loves painting. Personally I would love to see how you could lift the look of a load of TIE fighters. Looking forward to the next one.

@@eddieharr An unofficial (though to this day I still don't know why FFG turned it down) solo / co-op expansion with a good AI system and the chance to level up your pilot and upgrade your ship over a series of story missions.

As an x wing Devon who literally ran 4 Canadian National level events in Toronto I was very confused.
Love that your're playing X-Wing! But it smells a bit like AMG is doing damage control here...:) You should try out SW Armada. It's by far the best of the FFG - SW games.

I never updated from 1st edition since while I have tons of stuff due to xwing and tie fighter video games being an childhood memory and I am a sucker for stuff from my youth, I just did not play enough.
"Are you having fun?" "No". Lol. How I enjoy X-Wing -- don't use the cards. That frees you up to buy the ships cheap from ebayers who purchase the ships to sell the cards. Play scenarios, because as you saw it's easy to spend a lot of time just flying around each other. I'm still looking for my replacement ruleset -- 5150: Fighter Command is good. I'm also considering Silent Death and Bag The Hun (from Too Fat Lardies). After all, Star Wars is just World War 2 in space.
Oh, and take a look at Ares Games Wings of War while you are at it. X-Wing is "inspired by" Wings of War. The Battlestar Galactica Starship Miniatures Game (now defunct due to the license getting pulled) shows what X-Wing could have been. The differences are fascinating.
Great idea. The cards really take away from the main point of the game- the ships.

If you have X-Wing 1.0, you have to buy the upgrade pack from FFG (which gives you the cardboard and cards for your old ships), and buy 1 new starter set (which gives you the new damage cards, new tokens, new obstacles, and more stuff). The starter set has a booklet with 98% of the rules, but the TRUE rules are online, (which makes it easy to change fine details as needed). Many 1.0 players said screw it, and just kept playing 1.0. I thought carefully about the cost, and said, "the new game is significantly better, the upgrade cost is worth it," and I spent the $$$ to upgrade. But I can totally understand people not doing so.
If you have X-Wing 2.0, to go to 2.5 just read the updated rules online. No changes to the components.

I own a load of 1.0 ships. Never upgraded to 2.0. Now wondering if I should wait for AMG to release new cards/starter - advice from player base very welcome.
You can just buy the upgrade pack per your faction it comes with at least 2 converters per ship (some have more) and will allow you to play 2.0 since it also comes with a shoot ton of cards
The conversion kits are really good value, almost too good. And game is still a blast.
@@actualwafflesenjoyer because they allowed you to convert all of your 1.0 ships for a fraction of.the cost of buying a 2.0 version of each ship. They were not required to do that, it was a nice gesture to those who had spent money on 1.0. Would of cost me a fortune to manually upgrade my ships with 2.0 packs.

Hi Sonofliber, not quite true. You also need to buy one copy of the 2.0 starter kit for the new damage cards, new tokens, new obstacles. The new rules are online. You could likely make placeholder new tokens without too much trouble, and FFG was selling new damage decks (with custom art for each faction). The new damage deck is better than the old one, so I recommend picking up the new deck somewhere.

@The Last Phoenix Same. While this video reminded me that much of what I loved is still present in the current edition (the excellent core mechanics and the lovely - if expensive - pre-painted ships) I am also reminded of some of the baffling decisions they made, from graphic design (putting upgrades on large format cards) to list building (You have to use our PDF or the FFG app! No, wait, we aren't supporting FFG's app anymore and we aren't going to create our own!). But most of all, what I dislike is how they aggressively paired down the list of upgrades when - as we have seen - they are perfectly capable of producing card packs to improve availability. I get that balancing the growing library of upgrades was a burden but more than anything, taking away my choices is what killed my desire to play.
@@Siygess I get the feeling these are the last dying gasps in an attempt to get in new people to the game. Trying to pair things down to a simplistic state. TBH I think X-Wing, Armada, Imperial Assault, and the RPG line are done for. The only thing left seems to be Legion that's making real progress or profit.
AMG straight up wrecked the game. If you can find 1st edition it's a great game, after that it becomes a rules mess with overpriced ships being sold for obscene prices. Avoid like the plague.
Quit this game right after they released the 2nd edition that made you have to buy all new movement discs, etc. I see it hasn't gotten any better
