Seasonal allergies are something we’re all familiar with, whether you’re personally affected or not-and they’re rising in prevalence. Allergies occur when the immune system reacts to substances in the environment making IgE antibodies that trigger mast cells to release histamine. High histamine levels cause symptoms like itchy watery eyes, sneezing, stuffy nose, headaches, and more. Conventional treatments may help reduce symptoms temporarily, but they often include steroids which can be detrimental to your immune system, may contribute to osteoporosis, and, most importantly, don’t address the root cause of the immune dysregulation.
In this episode, Dr. Hyman discusses seasonal allergies with Dr. Cindy Geyer. They talk about how our early life informs the immune system and what steps parents can take to ensure a healthy gut flora and healthy immune system, right from the start. They also discuss ways to address the root cause of the allergy symptoms using diet, supplements, stress reduction, and more.
Dr. Cindy Geyer received her Bachelor of Science and her Doctor of Medicine degrees, with honors, from the Ohio State University. She completed residency in internal medicine at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, N.Y. and is triple board certified in internal medicine, integrative medicine, and lifestyle medicine. She joined The Ultrawellness Center in 2021 after practicing and serving as the medical director at Canyon Ranch for 23 years. She has served on the Board of Directors for the American College of Lifestyle Medicine and is a recently elected fellow of ACLM. Dr. Geyer has been a core faculty member at The Center for Mind-Body Medicine (CMBM) for 20 years, teaching physicians and other healthcare professionals how to use food and lifestyle to address health concerns in their own lives and those of their patients. A clinician, educator, and avid hiker, she is passionate about collaborative approaches to health and wellness: from the integrative team model in working with individual patients, to community partnerships that together can affect healthy changes in the places people live and work.

It's may also be due to low stomach acid. Check his stomach acid once because leaky gut is also caused by low stomach acid and also if he has acid reflux then it's almost 100% he has low stomach acid so take betaine hcl tablets and see if symptoms go down.

Drink Bragg's organic apple cider vinegar and Manuka honey once or twice per day. 1 tbsp of vinegar and 1/4 tsp of Manuka Honey in warm glass of water. Also buy Quercetin and take one pill every meal. This combination will decrease allergic reaction by a bunch. You will also loose water weight as you loose inflammation. I've been drinking this combo for yrs and it has changed my life.

The book “The liver cleansing diet’ also talks about allergies being higher if your liver and gut are off. So taking TUDCA and herbs to support your liver helps leaky gut and may help allergies! Her book is excellent and the liver, gallbladder, and gut work synergistically so helping one helps the other, working on all 3 at once may help. These helped me..

I honestly believe this is true. I suffered from Hayfever and Pet allergies, runny nose, itchy eyes and hives all of my life and have taken antihistamines for over 30 years. I started with adding Vitamin D and eating fermented foods as well as a few other things and my allergies since I started doing it are 95% better. At the very worst now I get itchy eyes every now and again. I don't lead a perfect diet but I do believe diet is the key to getting better.

same! I had IBS for more than 2 years, I was given pills. IBS caused me fibromialgia (pain all over my body) and allergies, histamine intolerance, anxieties. Again, they gave me antidepressants (they said It was in my head). I cut all the carbohydrates (i left only organic fruits and veggies in my diet), no more milk, cheeses, butter, no red meat, only organic chicken and fresh fish . . . Started eating fresh salad everyday with real Olive oil, kiwi and apricots (they are known as one of the best foods for microbiome). I Started doing Intermittent Fasting!
In few weeks the symptoms of IBS almost stopped, then all the pain in my body stopped, then in 3 months anxieties and panic attacks stopped. The only thing left - is allergies, I believe it will take more time to be cured.

What I’ve learned through in-depth research (for the sake of our own newborn) is that breastfeeding provides the best defence agains any such diseases, especially anything related to the gut microbiome (inclusing IBS and IBD). If you can breastfeed your child for at least 12 months (according to studies!), you’ll give him/her (at least some level of) protection against many of these disease for his/her ENTIRE life!

I feel like I can't eat anything. I have been on the AIP diet since April. I'm still having gut issues. I also have Sjogren's Syndrome and Mixed Connective Tissue Disease. I haven't eaten gluten in 12 years. Haven't eaten dairy in 6 years. Then I could not eat tree nuts, beans and legumes (including coffee and chocolate), all grains, watermelon, carrots, corn, soy, green beans, snap peas, peas, squash, nightshades, eggs, and raw cruciferous vegetables (including bok choy and kale) because they all cause serious intestinal cramping and other issues. Then I went back on the AIP, because I basically was eating that way anyway. I can't eat cassava, tapioca, and tigernuts now either. I suspect that coconut is bad because I seem to be reacting to it now. So if I have histamine issue I can't eat avocados, spinach, vinegar, canned and fermented veggies (live on a homestead and can all the time now), citrus fruits, bananas, and black tea to name a few???? What am I supposed to eat??? Only meat, as long as it is fresh? This is maddening!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
