The Crowd That Lifted The Weight

  • The intensity of the crowd during the men's +109kg session at the Euorpean Weightlifting Championships 2023 gives us a glimpse as to the true potential of weightlifting. The chanting, cheering and energy that the crowd brought with it helped empower the weightlifters to place, in many cases, personal records overhead. For Lasha Talakhadze, Varazdat Lalayan and Simon Martirosyan it played a huge role.

    I like how hyped the crowd was. At the same time it's just occurred to me that I haven't seen an interview of Lasha or the other lifters. I also think that just as we see gymnasts, track athletes swimmers, soccer players, football players and basketball players on the cover of magazines and on cereal boxes that same energy should go towards weightlifters. They put just as much effort, discipline and dedication into being the best they can be as any other athlete does. I'm not dissing any other athlete. I'm just saying I'd like to see weightlifters get the same recognition.

    • @jmcsquared18
      @jmcsquared18 Před 9 měsíci +16

      @@kathirpagalavan6448 I just don't think that Lasha is gonna total 500.
      Just mathematically, it's not gonna happen. Lasha struggled on his 267 clean and jerk (it initially got two reds before the jury gave it back to him). If he one day snatches even 230, which would be completely mind boggling, he'd need to hit 270 on the clean and jerk to get to 500. If he doesn't snatch north of 225, it'd need to be 275 or more. That'd be the heaviest attempt ever, not just make, if he did make it.
      Now that he's suffered an injury, despite how he's still the best ever, he might be at his peak. Just raking in golds at this point, he'll eventually get 9 gold totals, or maybe double digit golds, which would be a historic first. But a 500 total seems out of reach now imo.

      Steroids fuck up your heart, being very obese is hard on your heart, combine these two things with the absolutely enormous amount of energy it takes to move the weight he does, and this is where you land. Makes me concerned that his heavier lifts come from higher doses compared to the other athletes though. Funny you never see a high ranking powerlifter that doesn't have a substantial beer gut on him. It's like every one of them is afraid to lose the fat if it also takes away a single gram of muscle tissue as well.

    Can you please explain to us why they prefer to be fat over muscular? Muscle weighs more than fat so buoyancy is not an accurate reason. Muscle does what you tell it to do. Fat bobbles around and shimmies making it unwieldy. So where is the reasoning if they are already strong enough and big enough and fit to lift. It seems to me that muscle is the way to go.
    Help me out here I just can't see the reasonable cause? And look at how overheated they get being that insulated. Muscle would allow better sweat and less insulation.

      It's a byproduct of eating enough to build the muscle they need. They would rather have extra fat than not enough muscle.

      I think that for the things they do with the barbell, being fat isn't an obstacle, and also more fat equals more strenght.
      You then could ask if a 180 Kg fat, strong Lasha would be better than a thinner Lasha with same muscle mass but less fat; well, the answer I gave myself is that they just don't bother themselves with weight loss training, and their time is better spent working on strenght and techique.

    I'm new to weighlifting but the 3rd lifter (telakasi) looks like he's obese. I mean the chinese men weightlifters like Tian Tao and Mr too much muscle are so jacked and so atheletic. Is there any particular reason why men in the super heavy weight category are soo fat?

    • @stefs
      @stefs Před 9 měsíci +9

      if you're not restricted by a maximum weight, the caloric surplus helps you train harder (and recover from hard training sessions better). the harder training sessions are what helps them lift that weight. the caloric restriction necessary for a lower bf% would definitely impede their lifts. it's not that they're less muscular than shredded guys - to the contrary - they're more muscular, the muscles just not as visible. there are a few other reasons but that's it mostly. even in the lower weight classes there are some athletes (even chinese) who lift more with a (slightly) higher bf%, even thought that means a little less muscle mass.
