One day easy trek near Mumbai for Beginners
Karnala Fort is a hill fort in Raigad district, Maharashtra, India, about 10 km from Panvel city. Currently it is a protected place lying within the Karnala Bird Sanctuary. It was a place of strategic importance since it overlooked the Bor pass, which connected the Konkan coast to the interior of Maharashtra (Deccan Plateau)[1] on the main trade route between these areas.
Today, the ruins of the fort are a popular destination for hiking and tourism. The Karnala fort trail trek is a 3 kilometres trek from the bottom of the hill. There are 5 resting places on the pathway made by forest department. The final climbing steps near the entrance of the fort are made safe by iron railings. The water from the southernmost rock cut water cistern is potable. First aid is available at the forest guest house. Trekking during the monsoon is really an exhilarating experience.
From the top the forts of Prabalgad, Manikgad, Haji Malang/ Malanggad, Chanderi fort, Matheran, Sankshi fort, Dronagiri fort, and Rajmachi are clearly visible.
How to Reach Karnala Fort :
1) Take any train going to Panvel. ~₹40 for return
2) From Panvel station, go walking to Panvel ST stand which is 10-15 Mins walk (Hiring a rickshaw to ST stand costs ₹30)
3) From ST stand, take any bus going to Alibaug or Pen which passes through Karnala. It's a famous spot so confirm with conductor. Panvel to Karnala ST Bus fare: ~₹20 one way (₹40 return)
As of December 2021, entry fees in Karnala Bird Sanctuary (Karnala Fort) is ₹60
Total: ₹140
Since the ST was on strike in December 2021, I had to take a private rickshaw which costed me ₹150 one way. But during return, I got a sharing rickshaw for ₹40 per person. So plan accordingly.

Climb isn't steep, it's a easy hike. I'm breathless because I climbed really fast since there were a lot of people climbing and I wanted to squeeze out some time to shoot for the vlog.. 😄
