My guest today takes a more nuanced view of things, but she agrees that what you put into your body is foundational to your well-being, and there is no happiness without health.
Dr. Rhonda Patrick has a Ph.D. in biomedical science and has done extensive research on nutrition, aging, stress, and cancer. She trained as a postdoctoral fellow at Children’s Hospital Oakland Research Institute and has investigated the effects of micronutrient (vitamins and minerals) inadequacies on metabolism, inflammation, DNA damage, and aging and whether supplementation can reverse the damage. In addition, she also investigated the role of vitamin D in brain function, behavior, and other physiological functions.
Dr. Patrick frequently engages the public on topics including the role micronutrient deficiencies play in diseases of aging and the benefits of exposing the body to hormetic stressors, such as through exercise, fasting, sauna use or heat stress, or various forms of cold exposure. It is Dr. Patrick’s goal to challenge the status quo and encourage the wider public to think about health and longevity using a proactive, preventative approach.
I had the pleasure of finally sitting down with Dr. Rhonda Patrick, and she’s honestly one of the smartest people I have ever interviewed. We covered so much ground in our conversation, and she finds a relatable way to explain important science that can change your life. Knowledge is power, and I now feel much more well-equipped to make choices about what I eat and how I live.
Join me on Episode 967 to learn how to live longer, be happier, and eat healthier with the incredible Dr. Rhonda Patrick

It's a difference to beat yourself up for eating something unhealthy. That's causing stress too.

    • @Badabinger
      @Badabinger Před 3 lety

@@ollymounara605 Naturally everything has to be done with sensible measure, including self-critique. However, on a societal level the biggest problem is not that people are too hard on themselves. Rather the vast majority of people suck at introspection and being real with themselves (because itøs harder). So naturally that's where the main focus should be. But completely agree that changing habits ia a long journey that must be done in small steps. Making too big changes at once is bound to fail because people can't adhere to it. One small change at a time every 2-3 months is what works.

What has stuck with me is the idea that various vegetables have varied colors because that plant has evolved that color because it wants to protect itself from something, hence the various colors. Also there is evidence that the plaque accumulation in the brain causing dementia is a defense against a leaky gut. Gut health is vital.

If youPut pineapple or any kind of citrus with your Kale ....and then smash them together with your hands or you can use tongs or whatever... then just let it sit for a little while it makes the kale soft like it’s cooked. Also salt helps (which I love but some people try to avoid ur) it’s really good!
You could use any kind of acid though you could use vinegar or anything like that also

My husband's grandparents both lived well into the mid 90s with great overall health, cognitive functionality, and even a regular sex life. :) *Their secret?*
Both consumed a regular diet rich in various meat, potatoes (russet to sweet), and gravies/sauces. Whole milk, cream, butter, beef, pork, chicken, etc. They also ate various veggies, fruits, and enjoyed sweets for dessert (pie, cake, pudding). They didn't drink alcohol or smoke, and drank milk for dinner nearly every night. Neither was ever overweight. In fact, Grandma was quite thin. It seems they were never gluttonous, nor fans of processed foods.
So who knows if we really know what's best for every person in every situation, especially with our genetic differences. I had great uncles who lived to age 101 & 103: one ate healthily & led a clean life (no smoke/drink) -- while the other smoked, drank, & chased women (the one who lived 2 years longer). So...I'm sticking to *variation in moderation* with light-moderate exercise, no smoking and rarely alcohol. Cheers!

We are indeed all different. I, for example, cannot do dairy of any kind. Nor are soy products, even organic, good for me. However, keep in mind that most of the foods today are toxic and processed. That's not good for anyone. Even if I could do dairy, I would NEVER drink milk from the modern store. Never! All of that stuff, even the "organic" options are pasteurized, homogenized, and the labeling is often misleading. Even the tobacco in the cigarettes today is a far cry from the tobacco used even 100 years ago. We shouldn't be dogmatic, but we can't be foolish either. The only way to really know where your food comes from is to raise/ grow it yourself or get from a local farm/ farmers market you trust.

This is wonderful! There is so much valuable information in this session. One thing I learned in my 76 years is that you can learn to like foods. I learned to eat a wide variety of foods as a child and that is a great blessing. People do not realize that if they do not teach children to eat good foods they are setting the children up for a unhealthy life and early death. I learned to love nutrition in nursing school. We had a nutrition class with every speciality of study. I have read and studied nutrition all my life. No one ever guess my age correctly and I am fortunate to feel good and be very active.

Happy to see a scientist saying it out loud that red meat isn't necessarily bad and fruit/veg necessarily good. This open mindnessness and being up to date with the latest research convinced me that she actually knows what she's talking about (even though not everything from the list works for me).

It seems that the important thing is to rotate meats. I found it annoying the way he kept trying to pin her down to limited foods just because he's a picky eater. It's all about mind over matter. Eat what's recommended. Avoid what's not. Get over sugar addictions.

Clean air, clean fresh water, organic foods, sunshine, exercise, lack of fear and stress as well as the " herd immunity" as we had as children make for healthy human beings. I'm 66 and no more vaccinations for me. I'm returning to my child life frame of mind and have began again to plant my own veggies and playing in the dirt! Diversity in diet is key. Thank you for this information.
    Genesis 1:29
“And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.”
