The Heatwave Continues, Ireland 1976

- As Ireland enjoys a heatwave, life goes on in spite of the soaring temperatures.
The record temperatures experienced in Ireland on 29 June 1976 look set to continue. While some people escape to the beach or the countryside not everyone is choosing to get away. At the Slender Health Club in Stillorgan, County Dublin, keep fit enthusiasts sweat it out in an exercise class,
Oblivious to the soaring temperatures.
A street trader on Camden Street in Dublin city centre is doing a roaring trade in strawberries.
In Connemara, County Galway, harvesting in underway. Due to a shortage of tractors, farmers are using scythes.
People are being asked to conserve water to preserve reservoirs,
So don’t use the hose on the lawns or the flowers if you can avoid it.
There are no such restrictions on water supply in Dublin Zoo however, as it has its own lake. In a bid to keep cool, an elephant and a tiger take advantage of this perk.
In spite of the tropical climes at home, an appetite for foreign holidays remains. One travel agent has taken more bookings in the past week than in the previous three weeks combined. He reckons,
When people get a sample of good weather they’re more inclined to think of a continental holiday.
The good news for those who work from Monday to Friday is the good weather is set to continue throughout the weekend.
An RTÉ News report broadcast on 30 June 1976. The reporter is Colm Connolly. - Zábava
I just wanted to extend a warm welcome to all the fellow men of culture, who stopped by to study this rare and valuable archival footage.
@crazyclive : In this day and age, approaching any woman unasked to offer any sort of interaction outside of a government-mandated official capacity can get a man in trouble, hence why I limited my welcome to my fellow men of culture, as I knew that by and large, they would accept it without issues (it’s a “guy thing”, and I had no doubts that they’d “get it”). But, if it makes you happy, I hereby pile a nice stack of warm welcome up against that wall over there, and I will back away slowly, making it clear that women of culture are free to help themselves to that warm welcome strictly at their own initiative, if they so choose, and without me imposing it upon them in any way whatsoever. There. Oh, and all other individuals, collectives, and entities of whatever gender, orientation, self identification, or birthing capacity are free to help [insert pronoun here]-self/selves from that stack of warm welcome if desired. And now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m outta here, before I get cancelled.

I was only born in 1976. But while the 80's was my favourite decade, and a terrific time in being a child in Ireland in comparison to now, I have no doubt that the 70's were equally as good, I've been told this.
The summer's of '75 and '76, the windiest year of '74.
Overall, I think the summer's in the 70's and 80's were more consistently better weather wise than the 90's, 00's and now.

The past was not perfect, but you know what, the devil you know, is better than the devil you don't know. I'd still prefer to go back.
I was born in 1993, and I believe people (nowadays) tend to believe the past was better. I now believe that to some extent this is true, because people in that past were less afraid of the future, less afraid of their own lives in the future, they had to do less math in their heads, and they had (a lot more) children. Now, everyone feels insecure about the future, and noone has children. We buy more products, but we seem sad and more afraid than ever before of the future. I believe this will ultimately have to change in the not so distant future. Then again, maybe it's just me.
@@tomorrowneverdies567 Absolutely 💯 👍 agree.
On the flip side people born your generation (born in the mid 70s) would been the first where a large proportion of the generation would not be force to emigrant by the weakness of the domestic labour market. Change is rarely uniformly good or bad.
@@MrBobsmith34 Very true in relation to your point in when people are born in, we were very lucky that we didn't have to emigrate, but I'd have to completely disagree over what defines change. There's good change and bad change, human conditioned and created outside of our control. That's how I view it.
Down here in County Kerry in the 1980’s, rural Ireland, villages and towns were bustling in the 1980’s, they kept communities intact. Now, it's nothing. Our summer's were better too. And make absolutely no mistake about this at all whatsoever, mainstream chart music was better than the shit of today that passes as music. Utter scum music. There were problems for sure back then, plenty, still though, for me, life is about percentages game, what's overall positive and negative.
My time machine would not be taking me into the future, and certainly not in the present, I'd be going back, lost too many loved one's and friends passed away. Not back then though. We hadn't much at all, but I was definitely happier. It was pure, meaningful and with purpose, today? Nothing.
