    The most surprising thing here is that as late as the 80s you could still park your car at the side of the road in O'Connell Street.

    I loved that music shop, I've been looking to see it for years. The downstairs was all leather jackets and studded belts and Japanese flag things, the essence of hair metal down there. Was it called FM? It's a Carrolls now and I went downstairs a few years ago to see how much of it was the same. You can still just about feel the vibe. I had to leave quickly because security were watching me and I had no credible reason to be down there looking around at the walls.

    The fact they were playing 60s nostalgia on the radio when the video was made in 1985, with a rackety babble going on over the radio,spoils the soundtrack a bit. I think this might have worked better as a silent video, or even with a soundtrack of 1985 music (young, raw U2?). 1980's is the Dublin I remember, the good and the bad.

    • @dublinpaul1
      @dublinpaul1  Před rokem +3

      @@dublinpaul1 works great like it is. Real sound. Not some fake track put over it. We can have a quality of car radio back then as well as the traffic sounds, driving sounds of cars at that time, roadworks, ambience. Perfect.

    • @speakertreatz
      @speakertreatz Před 5 měsíci +1

      That's the beauty of this video, the sound track is completely authentic as well as everything else. The 60s music on the radio might clash with our mid-80s nostalgia fantasy but it's the messy truth, you heard 60s and 70s music all the time on Dublin radio in 1986 in the same way you'd see older adults wearing 70s jackets and flares, or oul ones dressed straight out of the early 60s. Even if we'd been lucky enough to get some 1986 music on the radio to go with the video, given the timeframe we could have ended up with The Chicken Song.

    • @andrewg.carvill4596
      @andrewg.carvill4596 Před 5 měsíci +1

      You got me there! I stand corrected. But my excuse for my mistake is that back in the 80's, the radio was playing 60's "Chicken Song" music. As you say, the messy truth!

      I think our camera crew just got unlucky with the programme on the station at whatever mad hour of a Sunday the drive was. I remember Energy 106 being a very contemporary station, all the current and chart music most of the time and had it been the previous day we'd have gotten Gerry Lang's soul show which was the latest in (mainly) black music, a very cutting edge show where a lot of the tracks played would end up in the charts a few weeks or months later. But we got unlucky..in one of the best years of the 80s for music, we got a 60s show@@andrewg.carvill4596

      Even the radio captures what those people were listening to then. And I see another comment using the radio sound to help date the filming as well as which radio station was playing even though it would change names/ownership at some point around then. Even more historical information.
