- Suspension set up and maintenance can seem like a dark art to some, luckily Doddy has had a bit of practice and knows his way around a pair of forks. In this video he breaks down the components of a common MTB fork. Explaining how each part works, the functions it has, and how it interacts with the other components.

GMBN Tech gotta say I usually prefer when my components donât break down!
Definitely! More fork vids using different brands if at all possible (Fox, X-Fusion). Your explanations of why things work the way they do make more sense than just reading a manual. I still don't know what I did wrong during re-assembly to make the TALAS adjustable travel stop working. Keep up the good work!
Bob Baldridge
Probably nothing you did wrong.
Thatâs a very common problem with those forks.
Contact fox, sometimes they will offer you a discounted replacement if itâs not fixable, which they often are not.
Yea. Great content.
Exploded views of components is how I figure things out.
I enjoy these videos. Iâm still learning and find them really useful.
I recently had to take my shock to TF Tuned and they were awesome. It had got super fizzy.
He stripped my shock with me there and explained how it all worked. It was fascinating.
Wish there was more videos like this to help us be a better home mechanic. Thank you Doddy!
First time ANYONE explained that volume spacers replaced oil. The mountain biking community has forgotten this major fact. Keep it going Doddy.
I fixed that problem with some 1997 Z1 Bombers. Coil springs are great, too bad they were invented first, because they'd be revolutionary today if they weren't.
@@Metal-Possum Its still the preferred choice in downhill.
For me the hardest thing about bike maintenance or buying new parts is knowing sizes, types, etc etc.. Like bearings, seals, rings, etc. Good video Doddy
This kind of videos are worth their length in gold! Looking forward when you change the travel, I'm about to do that on my Pike!
This video is perfect. We love watching this in-depth stuff on the tech channel. Thank you, Doddy!!
Another great one, Doddy. I love watching your videos! A handful of weeks ago I emailed you to ask about boosting the travel in my RS Pike 130mm up to 140mm, and Iâm really glad to hear that youâre putting together a video for this!
Iâll be first in line to watch it - cheers!
Doddy... bro... dude.... thatâs was great!!! I canât wait to see the detailed break down !!! And Iâm so glad whom ever was messing with the dirt sheds lighting hasnât messed with yours.
Super informative and awesome video, nice one Doddy!
Love the format. Nailed it. Now thatâs what I think of when I think âGMBN Tech!â
Extremely thorough video! Thx.
Super cool and interesting! You also explained really well how each part works. Gives much better idea how the fork works when riding and what each adjustment does.
Similar video for rear shocks would be nice too.
Simply the best explanation video I could find - thanks!
Doddy, great vid as usual. Youâre a fantastic explainer.
One note though, CSU = Crown Steerer Unit
Great info Doddy!
Nice one Doddy, looking forward to more fork videos.
Great vid Doddy!! I will be looking forward to the more in bepth follow ups as well. Been thinking about buying some forks just to take them apart and understand them better.
Good information, thanks, keep up the good work. Your videos are very informative.
Been too scared to take my fork apart but youâve convinced me doddddddy
The oil volumes seem off. Usually, the compression damper requires roughly 100ml while the bottom leg lubrication only has a few ml in each side. In the video, it seems reversed.
Was just thinking the same thing, must be an editing mistake.
Cool video idea.
Great explanation
Yes please, How to change your fork's travel! Thanks Doddy #GMBNTech đđ!
Be good see what is actually happening when you turn the compression and rebound adjusters on both the motion control and charger dampers.
I agree. A clear stanchion and lower leg to demostrate would be useful.
Dodd sure loves his mtbs đ€đŹđ§đ
What an amazing video
Thanks for the fantastic content
Thanks Matthew đ
Love it!
Great video!! thank you very much!!!
Rockshox solo air, ingeniously simple litte indentation inside the stanchions to equalise the pressure top to bottom, very cool đ
I know how they work, but I hope I can learn something new from this!
Can you do a video on the rear derailleur please.
Hey Doddy could you make a detailed vid on how the more expensive damper works?
Clearest video I have seen on forks, and how they work If I am upgrading the RC damper in a 2017 Pike can I put the old damper in a 2017 Revalation ? Is it worth the effort ?
Nice video.
Fox 34 please!!!
My Rockshox SL will just laugh at any potholes, its a trip, smooth so smooth đ đ
Really good video!! What happening when rebound adjuster is turning, so where these clicks are affecting and how?
How about a video on the routine Lower leg service that Rock Shox forks needs? I think most riders would be surprised to learn that it is every 50 hours of riding. That is at least 2 times a season for me. I would love to do this myself rather than pay a shop.
Its actually.v easy. U need the oils, new crush washers, a 10ml syringe to accurately measure oil volume (ebay, couple of ÂŁ) and a proper torque wrench with hex bit to retighten lower leg bolts correctly. SRAM/rockshox has very clear videos on CZcams/its website under the details for your fork, plus clear service manuals. Not a need for doddy to copy this existing reference source...just check them out, they have correct torque settings, oil weights/volumes etc. They are Simple yet detailed.
Hi, Doddie. Can you please breakdown a MountainPeak airfork? Thanks!
Hey Doddy Interesting Video. I've noticed that most 100mm shocks usually use only about half of the full travel using the recommended air pressure weight and usually I run my shocks at the lower than my weight pressure to give the shock a plusher feel. Now that I see there are air volume spacers I would like to know if a 100mm fork e.g. (my fork is a 2018 Rockshox world cup 100mm) would have capacity to adjust the volume spacers for more travel thereby eliminating the need for a 120mm fork? Or can you change the Damper to a 120mm?
Hi. Great video, thanks. Apologies if this has been asked already (looked but couldn't see). I've got a set of RockShox on my Whyte 805. They've got a bit of 'stiction' I'm told by a friend but they seem to perform fine. Or maybe I just don't notice as the deterioration has happened over a long period. What are the normal tell tale signs of a set of forks needing maintenance? Thanks Scott
#askgmbntech
Can you please explain fork topout? Is it possible in the rear, or on dropper posts?
Thanks!
Hurry up with the changing the Debonair & travel change/upgrade video please I just got one to replace on my Yari Soloair from 150 to 160 non boost đ

Make sure u have lower legs oil specified for ur fork and measuring syringe before u start! Might as well fit new foams at same time...soak them in the oil fir 10mins first (I put clean new, foams into the oil bottle, then hook.out with a pick). Plus u need isopropyl alcohol (amazon, from shl/fork cleaner...do NOT use brake cleaner). The cleaning rod, I bought off ebay, just a plain Delrin rod, 2.5 x 30 cm, ÂŁ5
#ASKGMBNTECH Hey dod! Doing some rad stuff here! Appreciate it. Since I needed to send an image, I have used the uploader service to ask my question. Hope you answer it!
Would the new air top cap fit on the previous solo air pike?
Brilliant vid Doddy as usual. Im thinking of changing my Pike from 150mm to 160mm, I assume its only the air spring and new oil I need or can I reuse the oil if the fork is relatively new? Thanks
New oil...its cheap dude, like ÂŁ7 fir enough to do 5-6 changes or more. See RS vid on airspring upgrades... czcams.com/video/5ir-wUrWaTs/video.html
How about a video of a full service on a charger/charger 2 damper side on rockshocks forks such as the pike. Damper replacement and everything.
Dampers are sealed units, shouldn't need strip down the damper. The damper service vid and manual is on sram/rockshox website under ur forks service info. Or google it and use the 'sram tech' video...
I am servicing a Marzocchi MX Bomber 04 fork and it has coils in both legs, but also an air filler valve in the right leg. Is this weird? Marzocchi manual says 135 ml of oil in both legs. Does that all go in the uppers? How much in the lowers? Thanks, I watch you guys all the time!
Can you make one for how to break it? please!
11:19 but I think you would need different oil for different temperatures, cus in the winter forks get harsh. maybe another video to make about oils, or how to set up suspension for winter use, coldest I rode in was -11C. but I definitely need to change something about the suspension, but I also need new frame and different studded tyres cus I want to run Cush Core as I do in the summer. in the spring and autumn, I can heat the fork up to get it plush, do it in a controllable way so I don't suddenly get plush suspension when I had harsh, but in the winter it's so cold the suspension is harsh, but I wish I could had bigger studded tyres, cus 2.1 with no Cush Core and high psi is harsh.
I am hoping you can shed some brilliance on an issue I have with my RockShox Secktor. It is a 140mm travel. I did a full breakdown in March for maintenance and also to fix the damper lock out that was inoperative when I bought the bike (used). I replaced the damper, damper rod, all o-rings, and seals and topped it off with fresh oil. All Rockshox parts and fluids and followed the service tech manual. It was working supreme, 100+ miles until I went off a rock feature and bottomed the fork. Now the lock out is inop again. The original issue with the damper cartridge was it was slightly bent. Yes, the plastic cartridge appeared to have been impacted from the bottom.
Any thoughts as to why this would happen?
Thank you
Does yari have the same motion control damper as revelation?
Question my shock was rusted or something in place for many years I put lube it it like a 2 months ago, riding mostly every day and randomly started working today. I'm curious if that's a bad sign or what?
Hello, i have my factory coil fork that the nutto remove it was on the inside of the fork. To see its, instead the locks, its hollow and deep inside its nut to remove the lowere shock. Is this commone for factory shocks?
Great work?
â€
Hey Man!! I am from Bangladesh where a lot of stuff is not available to service. I need to service my Rockshox Recon TK (Coil Shock) with oil inside. I have learnt a lot from you and keep my Cycle alive and running to the fullest. Now SRAM datasheet says for upper leg I need 5W and for lower leg 15w. I can't find anywhere. Can I use Motorbikes' same weight fork oil for this? Or what may be the alternative?? I will be waiting for your response.
Is there a video how to equalize positive and negative fork chambers. During inserting tokens something happened. I suspect that it is pressures in chambers. After pressing the fork now, it doesn't return to its full travel distance. It is not there even before pressing it. It is Marzocchi Bomber Z2 fork model 2021.
I have a Rockshox 30 silver tk and there is an issue that I am trying to fix, the rebound knob allen key doesnot gets fully in place while inserting in the damper shaft. And also the shaft now does not makes any click while rotating the knob it just smooth with no Rebound. Is it possible to fix this or do I need to replace the damper shaft?
Hi doddy please could you help me I have a 2016 rockshox Reba and I broke the remote lockout lever on the bars can I just get a lockout on the top of the fork like on the pike lyrik
Hi Doddy
3:03 there's also a spring inside the seal
The spring is on the outside, garter spring. Rockshox seals are just rubber units, nothing more to them to disassemble. Garter spring, rubber seal, foam ring. Thats it.
@@rupedog No, last time I serviced my 2018 RockShox Pike, I accidentally removed the spring inside the seal. It's like quite literally inside the dust wiper seal.
Quick question. How do you remove that odd shaped silver nut at the end of the air shaft? To service parts in the middle
You dont! Zero need to either. The airshaft just needs a clean and regrease on the o rings only and the shaft (then slide the bottom cap UP. Dont grease the bumpstop (only what sliding bottom cap pushes up off the shaft.
Cool, thanks From San Diego :) @@rupedog
I have a rockshox pike rct3 and im in two minds about servicing it myself or sending it to tftuned. Im fairly competent with using tools and other jobs but im afraid ill make a very costly mistake! Is it a particularly tricky job to undertake?
What sort of service? Damper? Lowers?
I have confidence in your abilities! After all, you've delivered 12 of your own children... this will be easy! ;)
Rockshox website has a very detailed breakdown and exploded views. They also have specs and part numbers listed. My only word of caution is, it can be very difficult to find your particular model. www.sram.com/service/rockshox/all
Lower leg service and airspring service is easy. BUT...make sure u get right oil (amazon ÂŁ7), 10ml syringe to accurately measure oil (ebay ÂŁ2), have sram butter or lm500 military grease (correct grease, any grease will Not do...the lm500 is what rockshox use in the factory btw), plastic delrin rod or similar for cleaning inside legs (ebay, ÂŁ5) - do not use anything metal! - and isopropyl for cleaning (amazon, SHL, ÂŁ5+ depending on size). Oh and foam rings or service kit, obviously. The oils, iso, tools etc all last multiple times, so cost per service is low.
Watch sram tech vids or service manuals. Very easy to find on sram website if ur logical...or google
#askgmbntech I have a 2018 Rockshox Recon TK. Is it possible to just change the dampner on this fork with a higher quality one without having to upgrade to a higher end fork? Thanks for this vid, keep them coming.
Nope
@@rupedog actually since asking this question I have been doing a lot of research and it looks like you can. As long as the damper comes from the same size stantion and the same material stantion, they can be interchanged.
I rebuilt my fork but now the lockout doesn't work. Rebound adjustment works fine. Any idea why it's not locking out?
Is there a top-out bumper on forks. What keeps forks from pulling out quickly and making a clunk sound when they are fulling extended.
The rubber top out bumper Doddy mention at 5:14, the black rubber block on the airspring... remember, the red bit doesnt move, so when fully extended the shaft slides down through this pulling the top grey part (and bumper) down to the red bit...the bumper stops the harsh knock at full extension
Speed of 'pulling out' is controlled by rebound damping, doddy also covered
Hey Doddy I broke my compression damper on my rockshox boxxer race can I use a damper from another fork with 35mm stantions
Probably not. What fork is it and from what year?
Prob not long.enough...unless taken from another boxxer
my pike Select RC,4 months old and compression adjuster does nothing? won't lock and doesn't feel softer either. any ideas?
It went together easily in less than an hour. czcams.com/users/postUgkxHL1v1R3NE5x4KiYfyt8dnQmyNYz7qi5L Make sure the front fork is forward or the pedals will hit the front tire. Tires are both a little soft so it needs air before I ride it. The rear wheel didn't come with a clamp regular bolts hold it on. The front had the clamp. No scratches out of box. Rims are a little off with a slight wobble. They could have spent more time with the spoke tool fixing the run out. So far out of the box I'm happy with it. I did replace the pedals with a nice aftermarket set. After riding it a bit my A$$ is a bit sore so I ordered another seat. Overall I'm nearly 60 and didn't ride a bike in 30 years. I like my new 29" Schwinn. It will be used for casual rides with my friend.
Explain how dual air changes travel
It Doesnt. Thats Dual Position. Rockshox dual air has a separate valve for pressurising the positive and negative air chambers, rather than one valve and the sir transfer port/divot doddy mentioned. It allowed precise adjustment of the fork feel but adds set up complexity..
#AskGMBN alright Doddy, I have RockShox Judy Silver TK Solo Air Forks - Boost 2018, when I turn .y lock out knob to adjust compression I'm basically stuck with fully locked out or not, nothing inbetween, is there any thing that can be done to adjust this so I can set my sag correctly
With any fork we would suggest that you setup the sag with the Compression Damping fully open (Unlocked) as you have an air sprung fork you will need to use a shock pump to adjust how hard the fork is. This lockout feature is only really needed for climbing or riding road sections. Hope this helps Lee đ
Hi Doddy. I've got a FOX 32 CTD where the lockout is damaged. The Trail and Decend modes work fine but in lockout it becomes a almost rigid fork. Is it worth fixing this yourself or just not use the lockout? FOX does not make parts for this 2015 fork any more.
Lockout is meant to make it almost rigid, that's the idea, if you want it to be able to move but still have extra damping, you use trail mode, sounds like nothing is wrong
@@michaelstewart9308 I had it in for service and the cartridge is damaged in the lockout position. I know how it's supposed to work. You should still have some damping in lockout mode.
@@FredrikNordstrand in lockout it wont move...it will be 99% rigid...Michael is correct, its working as it should. Lockout does what it says...it Locks it rigid
Can i ride my rock shox sektor without spacer too? Without spacer i have 150mm, with one spacer its 130mm. THX for a answer

Why is there oil leaking out of the top of my air side shock ?
Any clues ??
i have spinner aeris 320 forks, when i lift the bike there's a clacking sound from the rebound side, i try to open the forks there is oil spill out and found a gas tube inside and i don't have any idea to repair even i asked the mechanics. Would you help me guys?

I can get my hands on a new carbon handlebar from "Time", never heard of them, for 39âŹ.
The rise is 18mm my current handlebars have 5, I ride xc/trail.
Should i get them, or save money on a "proper" carbon handlebar, with maybe less rise?
Thanks for helping.

#askgmbntech doddy how many rebound clicks do 2014/5 rockshox pike rc/rct have? Mine only has 3 I'm thinking it's buggered
Yes, thats wrong. Usually about 18 ish
#askgmbntech Hello, i got a problem with my Rock Shox Lyrik RC fork, in the last 2 weeks it stiffened up more and more, had the right pressure in it for my weight (65 PSI) but it's gotten stiff like a rigid fork. when i let out all the air to 0 PSI there seems still air inside as i can't compress the fork to the full travel which should be no problem with no air in it, even when i sit on the bike with 0 PSI in it, the sag doesn't go over 10%, when i pump it up back to 65 PSI the fork is rigid and even with full force it won't compress more than 2 mm, so what could be the problem here?
Hard to say without seeing the fork Patrick, This could be a damping issue, bushing friction or air trapped. We would suggest you take this to a local suspension specialist and hopefully they can help you with this.
Havent accidentally turned compression dial to lock it out have u? Top of drive side leg
Or air trapped.in ur lowers, though.unlikely.if its that stiff...
@@rupedog it was air trapped in my lowers, i released it using zip ties between the seals and the stanchions and now it works as a charm again thanks for the tip :)
What tokens should u use with a rock shox revelation. When I watch the video i see the grey ones but when I go to www.sram.com/rockshox/technologies/bottomless-tokens they mention the black ones.

My fork bottoms out at about 80% travel, it is a suntiur Raidon. Is this a common problem in forks
You should add some volume spacers.
These will make your fork more progressive.
This way your fork won't bottom out.
@@exactpeak5995 I think he is saying it bottoms out Without using full travel... sound like a problem.inside the fork
Im gonna guess Park Tool is a sponsor.
Yes, Park Tool is as a channel sponsor John. đ€
The video details list the sponsors...click the arrow...sometimes there are giveaways there!
You could just lock your suspension instead of putting in that many spacers.
Both do different things, the lock out is just a lot of compression damping (this is the speed of movement). Reducing the air volume with oil or these volume spacers actually makes the "spring" more of a progressive curve. This means it will be softer at the start of the stroke and harder at the end. Hopefully this explains đ
Thanks,I'm not exactly doddy so I can use all this information đ
