    Neo being emotionless for half the movie is PERFECT. How would you react if you got unplugged from the matrix and saw the world for what it is (Post apocalyptic) ? You'd be shocked. Speeches.

    Keanu Reeves was and is the perfect cast for this particular role and the charakter I identified the most with. Why? Because he's a fucking good person in real life going through a hell of private tragedies. He shines with subtle nuances in his portrayal which came natural to him because he's a calm, vulnerable, self-reflecting, deep-thinking and distinctive person. So to bash him with this old-fashioned, overused "Kenau is a bad/boring actor" phrase just shows your bigheaded incapability to witness sheer greatness in small but mighty details.

      Will smith was chosen for the role and his response when shown the concept of bullet time was "what the fuck". When they showed it to Keanu, he thought it was the best thing he's ever heard. Right then and there you can see who has vision and and the intellectual insight.

    The first time I watched the Matrix it blew my mind and sent a chill down my spine. Especially the scene where Neo lays eyes on the Fields on millions of people for the first time. I don't know about you but the concept of living in a virtual reality had never even occurred to me, but what was more scary was how doable it was. " what is real " if real is what you can taste, smell, see and touch then real is just electrical signals sent to your brain. This is experienced by all when we have dreams, we don't even bloody know we are in one till we wake up 90% of the time.

    People like The Matrix because its quick and action packed and it just throws everything at you quickly so that anybody can get it. People hate the sequels because they try to explain the story and they do it in a big intellectual way, basically people hated Reloaded and Revolutions because they didn't understand them. "people hate what they don't understand" you see it all through time...

    • @markkroberger739
      @markkroberger739 Před 8 lety +1

      You are correct on the part of 'people hate what they don't understand', which make me wonder that this story came well before it's time. People have a hard time grasping the possibility, that we could one day have machines that could become 'sentient' artificial intelligence, probably because to them, only a 'god' can create life, and to define a person's actual existence, a person must have a 'soul' and a 'spirit'. But, what 'if' your existence is only based on the function of the brain only? That what you 'know' is from your senses (touch, smell, hearing, sight), and that all that you 'know' is from a lifetime of information gained by those senses?
      Now, consider those senses are duplicated? If your 'brain' was connected to a machine, that was capable of generating the same sensory input you experience 'now' without knowing this....how would you 'know' what is 'real', and what was 'not'? I know that there are many that would say this just can't happen, that no one would 'think' that it can happen even today, much less, at the time this film came out. Then again, this concept 'was' used before.
      STAR TREK: THE MOTION PICTURE was the first movie I had seen, that introduced the concept of a person being broke down 'digitally' into 'data patterns', while in the movie TRON, the idea that there is a 'computerized' world, and the possibly that a person could enter that world, also by being broke down 'digitally' into data patterns, and stored as a program. It was through the movie THE LAWNMOWER MAN, that we saw the ability to enter that digital world, but not actually 'become' part of it, and that you could leave it when desired (the same goes for the 'holodecks' in the Star Trek shows). The MATRIX was something far different than 'any' of those stories, as it introduced the concept that people were not in control, and that they were unaware of the world they were in was a illusion, which may explain the bigger reason why many people 'hate' this story.
      Do people 'believe' this could happen? That it could be 'real'? I remember hearing about people committing suicide after watching this movie, simply because of the possibility that what we 'think' is real, could be a lie, and that we could actually be trapped inside a computerized reality. This is probably the biggest reasons to hate the Matrix for many, although, it is more 'fear' that they feel than hate.

      Not at all. Many, many popular movies were misunderstood completely but still enjoyable to watch. 12 monkeys for example. Or American Beauty. I didn't understand American Beauty at all when I first saw it at 16, nor did I understand the first Matrix when I saw it at 13 yet I still loved them.
      The problem is they wrote shit screenplays. They didn't know how to properly communicate their ideas because they're become over-complicated and convoluted and what we ended up with was a complete mess.

      Yes Bull where the plug is(look up the astrological man notice where Taurus the Bull OF Heaven is located), why BULL ET, the anti center of the galaxy, & the fact that Bulls don't see Red like red dress analogy or why Rothschild means Red shield or to act as a human shield. ET means alien to what I am describing is Neo seeing Green or the truth= able to DE Cipher get it Cypher or why LU CIFER as LU means LLI or not ILL but to Heal. They also use the Red Shield metaphor in Highlander along with losing your head cut off at the neck telling people that the creator of the red shield was the Highlander himself which is played by what actor... Lambert who was born where... Great Neck, funny eh as if this reality like in Matrix is already ai/artificial construct & if you have a good bit of knowledge you can decipher names etc. which provide program function. & as for "fighting" the Bull of Heaven came to help once before from what I "guess" but when he did he of course had to remove(fight) the red shields(people/programs acting as human shields) laying them to waste but when he did the population which begged for help attacked him calling him a monster, the devil, Lucifer so really this limits the realistic things people can hope for. chopcooey Well I guess it's personal opinion if you think will isn't a good actor. I think he's really good especially in movies like I Am Legend, Ali, The Pursuit of Happyness, Men in Black lol, etc. He's charismatic as well and his acting (I've noticed that even if the movie itself isn't that great for whatever reason) is *usually* given lots of praise from critics...Meh. I guess we don't see the same things and that's fine, I suppose. I just don't think it's fair to say he's objectively not "good" cause his performances usually do get good reviews, (and this is excluding my own opinion). He's been nominated for lots of awards: Golden Globes, Academy, Grammys even. Not that I think awards mean anything (cause Leo -cries-) but from actually reading what reviews say from professionals, it's pretty even across the board...

    But denying your own impulses which usually is lead by wanting to improve or change IS also something that makes us human. Animals live by their impulses and instinct to do what it takes to eat, sometimes feed their family and defend themselves along other things. So if anything it's what makes us animals. Humans have always tried to change. We hate change but we have always changed since the dawn of time. Whether it's evolution or wanting to live a better life. Moving to other lands, finding other foods, finding a better home, giving your family the best you can offer, etc.

    Most people do t like the sequels because it takes more time to explain than just action . They simply don't get all the rhetoric, semantics, and analogies. So here it is. All that is in existence is the matrix. You will never escape unless you die. The "one" is just a a way for those who are aware of the matrix, to feel as if they are making a difference. At the end everything restarted and the Oracle and architect discuss the "rules" of the new matrix saying that those who want to leave will be freed.

  • @CowboyBoomBoomSlim
    @CowboyBoomBoomSlim Před 10 lety +41

    I don't think any of the three movies sucks but the reason why I think everyone loved the first movie so much, especially men is because this one is one big metaphor of life and society. It's about letting go of your current believe system and stepping into the unknown, finding out why we're here and living up to your true potential. Or you just stay in wonderland where everything looks good but is full of lies.
    Once you're willing to accept that everything you know isn't true you'll die (metaphorically) and you'll be reborn, ready to see the world as it truly is, ready to make your own choices.

    the sequels were alot more serious than the first movie it seemed. also the wachowskis worked on 4 different projects at the same time: 2 movies, a video game, and an animated movie. so something had to give. nevertheless, reloaded is the highest grossing R movie unadjusted for inflation.

    • @TheFlickFloggers
      @TheFlickFloggers  Před 10 lety +12

      We discuss this creative overload in our analysis videos. But in our opinion, more time should have been allotted for the feature films, as they are the bigger of the two projects.
      Also, box office numbers don't necessarily correlate to quality film. In this case, the first film had MAJOR cultural impact, so naturally the sequel would have a massive viewing. However, once Reloaded was released, Revolutions didn't do so hot box office-wise.

In retrospect, given the directors went full trans-sexual with operations et al, I have to say that line is horribly ill-fitting for anyone who wishes to NOT be a slave to inner compulsions, and who actually realizes that ALL behavior is a CHOICE, not some irresistible force beyond our control.

      Wrong. To deny can be after careful consideration, experience or lessons learned from other people's experience, also known as wisdom. So, unless you think people should NOT deny their impulses related to things liek road rage, sexual assault, or murder, then failing to deny impulses is or invites Nihilism.

    I never got why people hated the sequels so much but when i heard what was their reason i immediately realised its one of those people... yea... you know those types who just have nothing better to do than brag how wrong it was when they actually have no other way how to conclude it or express it - so instead of actually saying - Yea it was good - it just missed this or that, they simply say " SUCKED " so basically from people who don't have legit reasons why they don't like something, we should automatically just ignore and do not even take it as part of rating cause that also has bad impact on those who have more intelligence to actually take a moment and think about what is wrong and what is not before judging...
    Conclusion = Amazing trilogy, not for everyone, but definitely well made and original unique movie : )

      +Mark Johnson The original Matrix was made with pure love, blood sweat and tears. It has a soul of its own. The sequels.... just pale imitations. But here's a more rational explanation, from a filmmaking perspective - the sequels fail because they cannot stand on their own. A great film must have a self contained story, climax, and resolution. The second film completely fails in this regard, cliffhanger endings DO NOT WORK in cinema. The third film, slightly better, but still relies too much on the previous films and does not have a life of its own. THE MATRIX can stand on its own. But what if Revolutions was the only film in the trilogy... would it even make any sense? Try viewing each film without the existence of the others, and you can plainly see how strong (or weak) they are.

      I didn't like the final film at first. Because I didn't innerstand the point they were making. From my studies I saw it as an omnist theatrical. The examples of duality with agent smith and neo, the hero conquering his enemy in the real world and having to sacrifice his self for the greater good. Agent smith blew up at the end because his karma was nomore, his purpose was no longer. Neo laying as a cyborg going back to the celestial source.

    Physically and energetically, Keanu fits in with the cool, sleek aesthetic of the film. He was perfect for the role. This movie wasn't about Oscar worthy acting (although the acting has to be solid of course), it was about story and thematic material.

    If Keanu is such a bad actor, then why is he cast in so many movies? You have to understand that Keanu properly acts as a surfer type. There were several in my high school (early eighties) that had that distant type of "two worlds at one time" look on their face, and this is one of the reasons he is widely accepted in the mainstream. I would be glad to introduce you to the real "Mr. Anderson." Point Break "looks" like a surf movie on the surface, however it is brilliant political satire, combined with symbols of the economy of the time. The bank robberies were happening during the S&L crisis, and if you saw it in the theater at the time, you might understand the subtle commentary it was on the political and business environment of the late eighties/early nineties.

    I like the Matrix sequels because it looked like they were accomplishing something in real life (unless you believe the "Zion is just another virtual world" theory). Something about the conclusion of the first Matrix movie was frustrating and the opposite of cathartic. I think the story in Metal Gear Solid 2 illustrates why the end of Matrix 1 felt like a false victory

    Keep in mind (and I'm sure you point this out in the other videos) that the sequels unfortunately were taken over by Warner Bros.. They had more control over it. I mean, both sequels came out in the same year within a span of 6 months. They filmed both at the same time leaving The Wachowskis to not be able to be fully involved in both especially since they weren't all filmed in the same country. It was physically impossible for them to be at both places. Remember they had 5 years after the script was already done to change things and make it better. The others were pretty much rushed in comparison. The first film uses religion, philosophy, life and so much more. I had to rewatch a couple of times as an adult and read about what went into making the film and script to fully understand it and be blown away. It's so deep yet it can be enjoyed a lot on a superficial level by any kid.

    • @chasblankenship697
      @chasblankenship697 Před 8 lety +4

      +Sal Val Actually, it's completely the other way around.
      Of the three films, the first "Matrix" is the most stereotypical "action film" of them. Good guys are good, bad guys are bad, the protagonist embarks on the hero's journey, gains a mentor, finds true love, saves the day, the end.
      The sequels fly in the face of all of that, presenting challenging concepts and breaking traditional expectations of what sequels are supposed to be and do.
      The original Matrix is a Matrix unto itself...specifically the Matrix of the "Action Movie."
      With the sequels, the Wachowski's were attempting to give audiences alternative experiences in the hopes of liberating them from that Matrix.
      And it didn't work.
      Why?
      Because most audiences just want their easily digestible, easy to follow 2 hour action romps.
      Hollywood is the Machine...and audiences are plugged in, being fed computer generated dream worlds "built to keep us under control."
      The first film is very deliberately made the way it is as a primer, to prepare audiences for thinking outside of the parameters of the movie screen, the digestible content, etc. Then in theory, once we were ready to go, they gave us that opportunity with the sequels.
      Except we didn't take it because "Reloaded" and "Revolutions" weren't just carbon copies of the first film. Or, more specifically, they were as traditional as the first one.
      Give them anything other than that like, say, "Reloaded" and "Revolutions" and it becomes too cerebral and complicated. So people would rather just dismiss them than try to understand or come to terms with them.

      Chas Blankenship I liked the stories in the sequels, but I thought that they slacked on the visuals. You gotta at least maintain the standard the first set. I was against cgi characters until vet recently, it was obvious and poorly done. I literally groaned at the first big fight in the second movie with a dozen Agent Smiths, that's when I really thought that it just another Hollywood sequel and not a film like the first. The first one introduced the masses to an ancient philosophical topic that few fully envisioned before that, it's why do many people didn't understand it at first because it was such a would idea to them that they didn't even register it. I played video games so I got the virtual world thing pretty fast but others didn't.

    • @firsttimer2254
      @firsttimer2254 Před 5 lety

      @@chasblankenship697 I concur, great insight! The concept as to what machine is being rebelled against has been used and misused after the Matrix, you give the most direct one least tainted by conspiracy theorists over the years.
      By the third film I'd lost interest and I'll be reminded why, but I think it's been long enough to revisit the trilogy in its entirety. The lengthy, talky encounter with the 'Architect' somehow I remember being more significant than much of the action in the sequels.
