Ben Wallace (18pts/22rebs/10offrebs) vs. Lakers (Game 5, 2004 Finals)

- Ben Wallace gives the Pistons an unexpected extra edge against the Lakers by being a factor on offense. Not to mention that somebody who crashes the glass like a madman and grabs 10 offensive rebounds is offense in itself as well. June 15, 2004.

Ben Wallace is the center that every nba team wants and needs. This dude was unbelievable. Just standing 6'9, his super vertical leap, with speed and yes even agility better than most centers if not and with his lockdown defense in the paint against anyone is just mind blowing. Yes he had bad jumpers but with his speed and leaping ability he can make shots whether it's off the board, dunking over somebody, put back, offensive rebound and even sometimes post games. He could blow by all most all centers and don't make me say his defensive attributes. I'm sure it's all 99. He even could make quick passes because of his quickness and great understanding of the game both on defensive and offensive as well. Amazing. I doubt we will ever see someone like him again.
Draymond
He was my more like 6'6 very undersized
@@jbsix Draymond is an elite hustle player and defender no doubt but Big Ben was way better. Dude averaged almost 4 blocks, 2 steals and 14 rebounds a game at 6'7. The one thing Ben had by looking at this video is his athleticism. Even Draymond said Ben was his idol and you can see why. Their intensity is similar.
He should’ve made the top 75, but hopefully the top 100
He was 6'9 in shoes and was everything you said he was. Ben Wallace was uniquely great and one of my top 3 favorite players of all time. I loved that time and team.
The true is that Shaq was muscled as he wasn't on his entire career on this series (or at least since the early 90's) by Big Ben. Check how Ben blocks Shaq for the rebound at 2:24 Wallace won this one for Detroit, by outrebounding Shaq and shutting down the paint for Kobe (who shot 38% for the series btw).
Wallace was one off the greatest physical guys to ever play in the Nba. His combination off hustle, strenght, vertical and speed at this point was unbeliavable. And the fact he was the only guy that Artest wanted no bussiness with tells you how imposing he was for his opponents (no one really wanted to piss this beast at the time).
yes....strength of ten el phants
It's insane he's not in the hall of fame. 100% deserves to be there
@@PNieschulz He's finally in.
Could have been MVP that series.
+Chicago Cubs 2015 WS Champs I almost thought he should have been myself...
Should have been
Naw Chauncey controlled that whole series, he derserved it by far... Ben was great tho
Big Ben, one of the greatest defensive (and rebounding) centers ever. He was important on offense on this one too. Major reason why the Pistons were so good, and the eventual champions. Another good upload.
i remember i used too think ben was a big mean looking guy ... the dude is actually really humble
Told everyone Detroit would win this series and said Detroit would be up by 25 in the final game. Watched this team all year and there will NEVER be another team this defensively powerful again.
watching this team never gets old
I watch them all the time. I had VHS tapes of this team and the championship DVD.
Exception athlete. One of the most athletic players in NBA history. Quickness, strength, intelligence, hustle, are all attributes he had at top notch levels. Ben was a very intelligent player on both offense and defense, picking his spots and moves perfectly. Though he didn't hold the ball skills of many elite players, he made up for it with his basketball IQ and his dominant athletic ability. HOF bound, absolutely.
That one hand put back dunk at the end.... holy shit!
At least one underdog team won it all in the 2000s . Go Pistons !
Blame the management, the players were good. Just no chemistry.
The pistons in the 2000s were not and underdog, they were a contender
I like and respect Billups also but I think Big Ben should
have won the finals
mvp in 2004. He's the main reason why they won.
Yeah but Billups did so many little things that you just could not believe. Billups would take bumps from his opponents just to create space during drives, take bumps from opponents to create contact and draw a foul during shots and often making those shots too for an and 1 (Hamilton was good at this too), and hit so many big shots for the team plus was incredible from the line. Billups would also make his defenders look inadequate to the task of playing in the NBA (he did it to Kobe in the finals) because Billups was so schooled in the fundamentals of basketball because of his commitment and respect for game and how it should be played, which is why Billups got it and did deserve it. He was an ambassador for correct way to play basketball and thrived under Larry Brown. Billups is one of the most underrated players ever, it had to go to Billups.
No Chauncey derserved it by far, he controlled that whole series on both ends... Big Ben was great tho as usual
Just look at the scores. Unreal! We'll never see that again in basketball.
Respect for the players that hustle
22 rebounds at 6'7?? just like rodman, its all heart and focus. the undersized players seem to have more hustle since they don't have height
Uncle Bernard 6'9"
Tony Moshier 6'7.5
the afro is what made him 6'9
look up a picture of him with the braids standing next to tayshaun prince who was really 6'9. Ben is clearly shorter by like 2 inches. Ben has admitted that he was listed taller than he was as well
His only 6'7 only the shoes made him 6'9!!
Unfortunate not able to see this series, Big Ben should be HOF'er.
+Kallen Ace Certainly should have won the NBA Finals MVP that year at least...
4x DPOY has to mean something and the season with the most RPG in the 21st century. Also the greatest un-drafted player ever. If that means anything
+Kallen Ace yeah he should he's one of the best centers ever
The hardest working man in the nba!
Congrats Ben on being inducted in the Basketball Hall of Fame!
i might be trippin but i recall ben wallace knockin down a few baseline jumpers in that finals
DeemDaDream91 Yeah, he had a couple in the previous games.
He also had quite a few in the New Jersey series, namely Game 7
4:27- "You could play ten more games and the Lakers might not win one. It's been that dominant."
Damn, that's why I love this guy
This game serves as the punctuation mark, a fitting and redeeming end for Ben Wallace overcoming adversities from the night he went undrafted in that special 1996 Class.
He used adversity to his advantage very well, to say the least.
Hadn’t ever seen someone physically impose his will on Shaq up to that point!!!🤯
lol at 1:08, "he cant guard you hes washed up" to rick fox
Was it??? I really can't tell.
Simon Lainé nah, that was a court-side fan. sounds like something Sheed would say though!
MVP of series.
I rember these finals as a fourth grader back then wanting the lakers to win I Had to stay up late to watch the rest overseas in Nigeria. The memories
He was incredible in that era, but would be even more effective in todays game.
I lived Pistons bball during that era. What a hard working team studs on both sides of the floor.
if people actually they announced that the lakers needed malone to guard Ben.. Ben was too active for Shaq.. he was 5 inches shorter but ran like a small forward... which actually in nba terms was his actual position... Ben wasnt a center by conventional standards but he played above that
One of the best center all the time as the Detroit Piistons history like; Bill Laimbeer, Dennis Rodman etc.
he's HOF such a presence on the floor
He was very quick
At the 2:40 Mark the camera shows a flat screen TV with the Finals logo on it sitting in the middle of the cheering fans. That is bad ass.
Should be in the HOF
I would watch Ben Wallace's defense all day long, instead of watching today's soft games
Larry Brown actually ran plays for Ben, and included him in the offense. That was where Flip erred.
yes sir!! tough to see larry brown lose in 2001. I am still salty about that loss till this date. glad to see him beat the hated fakers in 2004. Big Ben wallace was the reason why they won. I mean look at his defense, just unreal!
This game was my penultimate visit to The Palace.
Never realized it til now, but some teams tried to recreate a dynasty with parallel players, the 2000-2008 Pistons were kind of like the bad boys, the Williams-Boozer Jazz was modelled after Malone Stockton.
0:33 - 0:40 is why I always say the closest player to Bill Russell in modern NBA history is Ben Wallace. Look how he reads the offense so beautifully to play help defense, then transitions with insane speed for a buffed up 6'9" guy. That acceleration was 🔥 had Westbrook speed in transition like holy f*ck
Ben Wallace is the Karl Malone of defense
could they beat the 96-98 bulls too? this is mind blowing
Possibly they can. I would say 50-50
billups nuff said
1:05 "he cant guard you hes washed up!" who was talking and who was he talking about?
A fan talking to Tayshaun about Rick Fox.
Darko Milicic.
Was that Bryon Russell from the Jazz??
Finals MVP.
The NBA misses this kind of teamwork anymore. So much chemistry. Now it's just full of ball hogs.
This is real NBA.. not now..
Kobe showed big love to coach Brown
big ball
This was like dennis rodman on steroids
How do these pistons have no hofers ?
Who is the woman at 3:52 ?
I was so glad that Detroit won that year.
Draymond will be eating out of his hands too
Best finals upset
nah mavericks upsetting 2011 heat is better
@@javerious24 that was a good one, but i still think beating a dynasty who won 3 out of 4 of the last championships in 5 games is unheard of. Dirk was in his prime and had a great supporting cast, lebron, wade, and bosh were in their first year just establishing chemistry and they still won 2 games
Shaq always claims he's never been truly dunked on. 5:06 that's a fucking dunk on Shaq gets some. Also Al Michaels should be ashamed of himself for being such a lakers homer the entire series.
1:06 Courtside Fan: He cant guard you hes washed up! 😄👍
Ben Wallace > Draymond Green
Piston demolished Prime Kobe ang Shaq
nba today is too soft
