  • I've been looking forward to installing flappy paddles in my 86' Trans Am since I started the l83/6l80e conversion a few years ago. It's been a slow build but the day has finally come! However after the install I may be having second thoughts..

    No Escalade video and instead a trans am video? Won’t hear me complain.

    I really like the look of the paddle shifters! it would be neat to have the factory bird horn cover to really make it look more stock. Thanks for the video!

    The module in the steering wheel is surrounded with aluminum and is grounded to the chassis. If the antenna to that module was divorced from the pc board and could be extended into the column, it would probably work more reliably.

    Love the paddle shifters on the 3rd gen autos. Makes me want to do something like this to a '80 Turbo Trans Am and making it all look factory.

    The delay is usually the power management settings. GM has it turned way down so you don’t break the transmission under warranty

    Dude I'm jealous! I have the same system (with the screen) and have had it mounted in my track car for about a year. I just haven't wired it in yet (aftermarket column, no horn ring/wire). Soon though, especially after seeing you get one installed.

    Building a kit car and was considering something like this but now I will rethink this approach and maybe look into like you mentioned a switch on the wheel as some of the aftermarket wheels have them. Great video thanks

    The issue is it is a radio transmitter that has been encased in thick aluminum. Basically a faraday cage. What they need to do is have a small rubber duck antenna come out, or a simple wire antenna. But the antenna has to be outside of all the aluminum.
    One thing you could do is power the unit using a small 12v lithium ion battery and see if it cuts out if you still think it is the power delivery.
    Btw dorman does make a replacement for the horn contact for thirdgens but it is a pain to replace.

    • @lsXmatt
      @lsXmatt  Před 4 měsíci

      Some kind of antenna would probably make a huge difference. A wire would be easy to hide too.

    My wifes v6 camaro had them. I didn't like it at all. Was slow and wouldn't let you use them hard. Either of us really ever used them. It was annoying in a parking lot sometimes when I would put in manual not thinking and it would drag a bit until I realized and paddled it up until I could slip it into D. If it was a bit more responsive it would be great. That said its a pretty cool adaption.

    My Escalade with manual shift sometimes won't upshift at certain gear and rpm. I use manual shift on it alot. Maybe the shift buttons are getting sticky 🤷. Right now I'm looking at either paddle shifting my Avalanche or just installing a NV3500 manual trans in it.

    Why didn't you go with Lecarra steering wheel that classic GM

  • @TheDramolcan
    @TheDramolcan Před 3 měsíci

    You mentioned the box was hot when you pulled out from the dash board. Maybe its gets too hot causing it to fail and it needs to be left in the open to stay cool. Or it needs a fan.

    If they made their housing and the spacers out of plastic instead of aluminum it would have been fine, but then it would feel cheap.

  • @lsquest263
    @lsquest263 Před 4 měsíci +1

    Yep, hardwired! Don't understand what the benefit of the wireless is. If the receiver is 1" from the column, might as well hardwire it.

  • @jeffreylarsh1724
    @jeffreylarsh1724 Před 4 měsíci

    My guess is that the metal of the dash was somewhat blocking the wireless signal

  • @McGruff2008

    • @devysavage6957
      @devysavage6957 Před 4 měsíci

      im using a bcm from a 2012 caprice ppv to do my paddle shifters. on my third gen camaro . but im also using the caprice engine, trans, all wiring and a bunch of mechanical like dash, pedals and steering. if you have a donor car anything is possible

    Ever think about doing a carbon fiber wrap to the hood and headlight covers and maybe even the spoiler? Hell of a lot cheaper than the real thing and would look just as sweet.

    • @lsXmatt
      @lsXmatt  Před 4 měsíci +1

      I was thinking about wrapping but the car needs a stupid amount of prep for the wrap to stick. Theres some weird bondo cracks on the door and the paint is peeling in so many places

    • @retrobear9367
      @retrobear9367 Před 4 měsíci

      @@lsXmatt oooooh definitely. I'm wrapping my 2003 Vette. I was dumb enough t get a Maaco paint job. It's got runs, cracks and now chips. Gonna be about 1k for the prep. I am horrible with sanding and whatnot. So worth it when it's all done though.
