Thank you!!! Happy new year 🎊🥳
Thanks for watching! happy new year!
I use the PL6 to prepare the RAW files for further processing in LR6. I‘m really impressed how the PL6 performs in recovering color and structure information in shadows and highlights but I was unable to finish my shots there with the colors that would fit my taste. But with only one or two sliders in LR6 applied to the tiff file imported from the PL6 I get the look I want. For the time being it’s the best workflow I could develop for the stills aiming maximum information in all areas and authentic colors.
Definitly LR complements PL6 and vice versa. The ideal situation it seems is a multitude of RAW editors because no single one does everything perfectly. You just need to have the budget :)
wonderful comprehensive and helpful review. Thanks a lot! I'm considering to swap out ExposureX7 with PL6 because it natively supports the orf-files from my OM-Systems camera and I like the dehazing and especially the Deeprime noise reduction. LR drops out because of the subscription-model and C1 seems just too pricy for me as hobbyist. For HDR, Panoramas and Stacking I use Affinity Photo 2.
Good choice! PL6 is superior to exposure x7 in its tone adjustments and effective tools set. It should make it easier to get great images. Hope the next version of Exposure is better.
EXCELLENT review in every way. I appreciate the intelligent approach of highlighting each apps positive and negative features. A great help for me because I am trying to find the best Lightroom alternative.
My pleasure! Let me know what you settled for
The comparison portion was great! Thanks. I use Neo and On1 . Use to use Lightroom but I'm against subscriptions.
Thanks for your feedback. Always helpful to hear what users use. Really helps me choose what apps to review! 😊

First Rate, congratulations on an excellent and well-balanced comparison.
Thanks for the complement. All the editors are great and based on the coments most people seem to have more than one :)
Good review! I have all of these editors (but have dropped Neo and am dropping Lightroom) and I pretty much agree with your ranking, although there are situations where I’d choose to use one of them. In my experience with Capture One (four years) it definitely has the best raw development (most resolution and detail) and the most precise editing features which makes it my favorite.
Excellent to hear you have the same experience. You must love RAW editing to use so many softwares. As you say each RAW editor shines in different aspects. I use DXO for noise and haze reduction which complements Capture Ones standard processing.
@@takebetterphotos8132 yes, I only edit RAW files, but I am a bit compulsive, so I have to try everything. Of course, it turns out that I like more than one editor for various reasons, so I can't limit myself to just one 😄
Haha I understand. Well there's no shortage of new features so it's never ending of trying out!
Brilliant comparison approach, highlighting the main characteristics. Many thanks. New sub😃👍. ...so I will update my C1 from v21 to 23 then. ...although the very new LR AI masks seem to be very compelling..Hmmm.
Thanks for the feedback and the sub.! Both C1 and LR are excellent. I just prefer the colors of C1. But if you are primarily looking for the best masking the AI of LR is the way to go.
@@takebetterphotos8132 thanks for reply 👍 looking for both, of course😁 best detail and colours combined with supereasy to use local masking. 😃✌️
Yes who doesn't. But since you already have capture one why don't you augment with something like DXO photolab. It's tools sets such as clearview and microcontrast greatly augments capture one. Thats what I would do 😁
Thanks for the idea with DXO ...I am actually considering NIK Coll. ...but the denoiser from DXO Lab is indeed interesting. ...will wait with C1 upgrade to beginning Feb, when they announce new pricing / business model / switch to subscription mainly...of C1 will be mainly subscription model and more expensive than LR+ PS, I ll probably switch back to LR. Cheers ✌️
This was great comparison. I use a couple of raw editors (PL6, Capture One using Photo Shop and Affinity Photo which wasn't included) but based on your comparison, I'd have to agree that Capture One Pro is the winner. If Capture One Pro is still offering a life time price and including free updates, I will most likely go with them. Great video.
Thanks for the positive review. Capture One seems to be limiting their free updates unfortunately which is upsetting some users. But it's true that they give the most pleasing adjustments.
I recently discovered the free raw-editor "Dark Table". I was surprised by the huge number of possibilities, flexible interface settings, masks and layers, etc. Also a good option. 😉
Ok I've heard of Dark Table but not Black Table. I'll check it out! Thanks for the tip and for watching :)
@@takebetterphotos8132 Oh, yes. Dark table. You're right. I messed up and already corrected in the comments. 😃
Ah I thought there was another competitor. Yes coincindentally I had darktable on the queue for a review soon. Not many open source editors around. Hopefully it can do the job!
@@takebetterphotos8132 ok. 😊👍
I have PL6, Luminar Neo & Capture One. I use them all in different images but my go to is generally PL6 - love its dehazing and noise reduction. Going to drop Capture One, sadly, because of their profiteering cost restructuring model which only seems to benefit professionals.
Yes DXO's dehazing and noise reduction is unmatched. I also like its simple price structure and UI. Capture One needs to innovate more (i.e. add AI masking etc to justify their sky high price)
Capture One also has a refine mask option @ 18:07
You said @ 7:24 that ON1 is the only one with mask refining so I think that's what you're looking for with Capture One.
What adjustment did you do for the final slideshow?
Hi I stand corrected Capture one does have a refine tool. Final slide show is just standard shadow/highlight local adjustments. Didn't do any color editing .
@@takebetterphotos8132 No problem, there's a lot that you had to test. Was sharpening at default as well? Luminar has a weird jittery over-sharpened look.
I may have applied a bit of clarity or sharpening but very little to avoid halos.
I would like an asset (Raw files) manager separate from the editors. I haven't tried Capture One but have all the others while looking for a Lightroom replacement, which in the meantime keeps getting better.
Capture One's and ON1s are the most capable asset managers. You can also try ACDSee which I will be doing a video on its asset management features. At least those are the ones I have experience with.
But for DxO, with the masking spillover you mentioned, that's not really a drawback on the software side, that's a user error. Because wouldn't you need to decrease the brush size in order to get what you wanted selected without spilling over into what you don't want selected? Yes I understand that there would be gaps in what you want selected in which case that makes sense, but in this example, you had a big brush size so naturally it was going to spill over.
Hi Jordan, even DXO on its official documentation mentions the spillover. It is a known issue on the software side. Not sure if they can't or just won't fix it.
The brush has 2 zones. So long as you keep the darker zone inside the area you want to mask, there isn't an issue. The lighter zone lets the program pick out edges and helps with masking accuracy. You can adjust the sizes of both zones to suit what you are working on.
Is there a free or low cost raw photo editing program that you would recommend? A shoot out video like this one on cheaper photo editing programs would be great too. Thanks
Hi Affinity Photo or Pixelmator Pro. Actually I have thought about that type of shootout but couldn't come up with more than two for the desktop 🙂 I think I've tried them all.
@takebetterphotos8132 Thanks! I will check those two out. I've been told by someone else to try Rawtherapee, Photoscape or Gimp?
I have tried those but in my opinion not satisfactory in UI and performance. But let me if you try it yourself. Would love to hear other opinions. 🙂
Great video. What about acdsee?
Hi I like ACDSee more as photo manager. Perhaps I shall do a review on its RAW editing capabilities as well as many people have asked about it.
@@takebetterphotos8132 I used ACDSee as my primary photo manager. The RAW developer however I can't seem to get good results - so would be interested to hear what someone more experienced can get out of it.
Hi I have tried ACDSee. The results are not the same calibre as the other RAW editors in my top 5 list. The interface also could use work. For their price I would just go with Affinity Photo for RAW editing.
Nice review, but why you put one above the other stays a bit mysterious for me. Except for Luminar all three of them have their strong points.
Mostly the quality of tone adjustments is the key reason I would put one over the other. Thanks for watching!
Adobe Camera Raw ACR v15.1 is incredible for Fuji files.... no worms.
thanks for the feedback!
Why no Affinity photo 2 included? And where would you put that in that list in retrospect please?
Hi, unfortunately, when I made this Affinity Photo was not yet launched. I would probably put Affinity 2 at #6 or #7 depending on whether it is better than Pixelmator Pro which has also improved much.
I like Lightroom the best as it’s object selection is superior and library mgmt. I had on1 and I agree it has a confusing interface. I use pure raw from DXO to preprocess noisy files. Neo is too $$$ with the plug-ins capture one is going to a subscription model at twice the cost of adobes
Mistake I think if Capture One does go to pure subscription. AI of Lightroom is the best hopefully the rest can catch up!
Good review. I only disagree with the masking abilities of LR and C1. The recent updates of LR make it a masking machine. Everything is possible. Luminosity, tonal, color masking. Masking with one click (sky, face, hairs, etc.). In its variety it‘s much superior to C1.
Fair enough. Will review the most recent updates of LR. Thanks for the info!
Lightroom works worse with color. C1 and DxO Photolab algorithms, camera and lens profiles, raw interpretation work much better. But it's Adobe's AI layers and masks that are currently in the lead.
@@gandolfred I agree.
Yes agree with this. Their color has been the same since forever so I don't expect any change.
you have forgot affinity photo
Can only put 5 on the list. Affinity has some limitations compared to the rest.
📌 When AI masks are added to Capture One, like in ON1 or Lightroom, it will definitely be the leader. 🤗
Yes they are lacking in that regard. They should start working on it asap.
When it comes to AI masking I find LR's is superior to ON1's. However my RAW editing is ON1 where I use its luminosity masking instead of the AI masking which is IMO not mature enough.
@@shlomoeshet8525 Why do you choose ON1 over LR is it the pricing?
@@takebetterphotos8132 No. It's because ON1 has better tools and presets that suit my needs. I use also Photoshop with ACR which is basically the same as LR without the cataloging feature.
@@shlomoeshet8525 I see great sign for ON1 to see LR users go for them on features not just pricing
