Seeing these scenes of trams on their own and not just as a backdrop to your narration does have a calming effect. I don't know if the word chill is still in vogue but that's the feeling I get. I enjoy riding on trains, trams and busses for the feeling of movement and motion (being autistic I pick up on that sensation quite well) and when my working days are done one of my goals is to see the world via as many of these systems as possible, including those in London (or Croydon, in this case). Thanks for giving us this.

May I interest you in a channel of a Hanover Stadtbahn driver that post(ed - channel seems to have died -) cab ride videos of said system, giving trivia and interesting information in the closed captions? I found them quite relaxing and interesting. The later ones even go for an over-the-shoulder perspective, allowing to see what they do and how they work.

I once went to Croydon just to ride the Trams of London. Rode from Wimbledon all the way to the last stop @ New Addington. Very interesting when you could see them literally almost every city in Europe but not in London.
Nevertheless, it's always interesting especially to see their starking bright green livery and how the infrastructures around trams were built, how roads and other modes of transports blend with it. Love that day so much.

  • @geoffbarry9540

Wow, tons of memory lane in this. George Street between East Croydon station and the underpass - I used to walk through there when it was being redeveloped in the early 60s. In fact I saw the underpass being built. The old corner of lower George Street and London Road, and the Whitgift Alms Houses. My mum slipped on the ice on the corner diagonally opposite to the alms houses in 1981 and broke her wrist, which resulted in her retirement and, later that year, her migration to here in Australia. But, out of the blue, watching that tram traverse the curve beside West Croydon station, into my head flashed the memory of the bus station/interchange there and, more importantly, the recollection of also seeing trolley buses pulling into and out of there during their last years of operation. Ah Croydon, so many memories of so long ago.

When I lived in NJ, I lived in an area that had an extensive tram network of its own called the Hudson-Bergen Light Rail. Something else the HBLR and the Croydon trams have in common besides being trams is that they are both 17 miles/28 km in length. NJ actually has three tram systems, the Hudson-Bergen, the Newark Light Rail (also known as the Newark City Subway because some of its stations are underground; if you stay underground the fare is just 75 cents), and the River Line (between Trenton and Camden; this line is more of a tram-train than just a tram and unlike the other two, it is shared with the freight Conrail). For such a small state, their transit infrastructure is massive. Not perfect, but better than nothing.

At 3:39, the video shows a very rare thing in the rail world today and that is a section of gauntlet, or interlaced, track (rather than single track with points at either end, back to double track) very near Mitcham. Rugby Road in Portsmouth has some preserved tram track ,which is also interlaced, and can be seen on Google Maps, Street View).

I agree. Thanks for this,Jago. After a busy week it's relaxing to watch videos like this,as I'm getting my marbles together over the first coffee of the day on a Saturday morning. It's interesting for me to see as well, because we don't see trams in the streets where I am in Hertfordshire or in the North,West or Central parts of London that are familiar haunts to me. I know they're in Croydon and I saw the signs for Wimbledon,New Addington, etc. but where do the capital's tram lines run to and from again? I thought I should have seen them on one of my away football trips to Crystal Palace's Selhurst Park ground back in the 90s. The only time I've been on a tram in the UK is in Blackpool (up the coast to Fleetwood, down it to Lytham St Annes),unless there's somewhere I've forgotten.

Late last year at Middleton, Leeds, a section of the (original or later C19th) 'tram' track was uncovered, it was thought lost completely. It should be on display in the Engine House museum building. This is when Tram meant generally a small 4 wheeled cart hauled or propelled along a railed route. The size was determined by what a horse could pull or a stationery steam winding engine could move.

The London & South Coast Railway electrified its South London commuter lines with overhead catenary with 6,700v AC between 1909 to 1925. This was unique in the UK, I believe. When Southern Railway took over in 1923, it eventually converted the lines to their third rail system of 660v DC. Some of the redundant coaches were converted to run on 660volts, called 2WIM for '2 coach Wimbledon' and put into service on the Wimbledon-West Croydon Line, now Croydon Tramway. They were scrapped in 1954, but I remember them well, because the roof over each driver's cab was flat, where the bow collectors had been on their original voltage.

Fantastic video Jago… I took my first Croydon Tram ride two years ago ironically when I left London to live in Brighton. I had to go to Bromley and the Tram was the easiest way. I absolutely love them and I’ll be trying out the LUAS in Dublin this year.

I’ll be honest, though I regularly come here for the information you provide about the various railway lines, stations and whatnot, I do like this nice change of pace and definitely wouldn’t mind seeing more of this kind of thing.

Yes, Jago, please do a video of the Norwich trams. I am, of course, presuming here that you do own a time machine as the last one ran in 1935. But, I'm sure that won't be a problem for a man of your talents!

A touch of reverb, a few Eno-esque synth noises and the soundtrack to this would make a pretty good ambient record!

I have been on the Croydon Tramlink and their trams are so efficient, quiet and smooth. Wish that TfL would allow trams to operate in West London, North London and East London and to replace buses that London needs cleaner air and less pollution. And also there are plans to expand the Tramlink from Wimbledon or Colliers Wood to Sutton that would be called Tramlink 2 I think.

Also was there ever any truth in the rumour that Edinburgh tried to offload some excess extra trams on Crydon but they discovered they wouldn't fit.

This is an interesting kind of content. Not quite the continuous footage of "slow TV" but with a similar vibe, perfect to have on in the background whilst working/studying.
It's also a nice to see a collection of your B roll in 1 place. It might even help in editing, having a single B roll file to load and cut in/out.
Either way, much like the rest of the channel, it's nice that this exists.

The London Trams are similar to what we Americans call streetcars, like the KC Streetcar in my hometown of Kansas City. The KC Streetcar has proved very popular and is being extended - one extension is under construction, one is ready to start construction, one is in late planning, and one is in study phase. I hope that's only the beginning.

It is worth noting that in continental Europe most of those traine and lines would be qualified as train-trams (or tram-trains) not regular tramways in the usual meaning of the word.

It's interesting to see the interaction with other vehicles - at 1:33 the bus narrowly misses hitting the tram because of its "front swing". I think we need much better markings. A double-white line isn't even the right thing to use.
