- Another one of my favorite interpreters of Sondheim's work - Donna Murphy as Phyllis in the City Center Encores! production of Follies. I'm not really a big fan of this particular production but at least Donna, Vicki Clark, Lucine Amara, and Mimi Hines managed to save it with their stellar performances.

More people need to know the name “Donna Murphy”
She is so shockingly good and a two time tony award winner, so I thought everyone did know her name but I was suprised to find out that this isn't always the case. To me she is one of the greats!

A whole generation know her as Mother Gothel from Tangled! Lucky.

Hahah! I love Donny Murphy’s riveting performance here! I watched her on Sondheim’s 80th Birthday video and seeing her in this Broadway act is even more fun to watch! Her voice is just tinged with regret and sarcasm and heartbreak!
Well done. With venom and terrific attention to the words (having heard Sondheim sung by otherwise terrific singers who were more in love with the sound of their voice than communicating and interpreting, can't take that for granted.) Thanks!

a great interpretation with the balance pretty spot on where the vituperation meets resolute sardonistic release of pent up anger and bitterness; power and control and vulnerability unlike the versions where the performer becomes victim this is the character finding her chuzpah and freedom on voice

Sondheim himself said that that Alexis Smith's rendition is his favorite, since he wrote it for her. There are many examples of Murphy doing it and each one is different. It's one of those songs that can NOT be sung wrong if the singer sings the meaning.

Hmm, I don’t think Patti belongs on this list. She’s a belter compared to the others, and lacks nuance in her interpretations. She wasn’t part of any original Sondheim productions, unlike Donna and of course, Bernadette.
