Thanks. This is about my 10 videos looking for adjust (not rebuild) the brakes on my Craftsman lawn tractor. It seems close enough to figure it out now. I dont know why the others gloss over or ignore the adjustment.

Gonna give this a shot on my 1998 MTD yard machine.
I haven’t had decent brakes for about 2 seasons now and kept thinking I’d just buy a new machine as I’ve fix or replaced so many parts and pretty much have to work on it every time I use it for one reason or another.
    Usually tires
    and battery issues.
I’ve been pricing all the parts I need to fix my mower right and fix all the quirks and it’s literally a little over $100.oo so I’m definitely going to just freshen up this old girl and get it right for cheap.
I’d be crazy to buy a new mower when parts are so cheap and easy to fix on this thing.
Thanks for the video....I’m a do it myselfer and these videos help greatly.
I’ll try this trick and if it doesent work I’ll just free up my caliper and buy a new disk and pucks.

No store had brake pads for my LT 1000. So I took the old brake pads And glued some hard wood to the pad. I measured the thickness of a new pad. So far it is working. Saw one place online wanted $23 plus shipping for one pad.

Thanks. Was given 1979 John Deere 108. Got as far as rebuilding steering box and replacing cracked engine. Then it sat in my shed for a decade. Making brakes work took about as long as watching this video.

Thank you. you have the best step by step with visual video. I just got a 2006 toro lx460. I have bin working the bugs out of it. It's my backup mower. For a small tractor it's a lil beast. I like it. I'll be looking to do all the belts next spring. Just fixed steering. Again. Thanks for the easy follow video. Keep up the great job.

I love it that has to be the easiest way to adjust brakes on a riding mower that I have ever seen. Can't wait to try that out I bet mine are way out of adjustment. I think however on my 66 Gilson it probably does not work that way but I will take a look and see. Thanks!

  • @Demo12345

One thing to keep in mind, sometimes those pins can get stuck especially if it's on a mower that has been sitting for a good while. They're not hard to get unstuck, but they can be annoying. I usually remove the aluminum part they're slid into and take it over to a bench vise, then with some persuasion from a hammer and a set of pliers I can get them out. Clean them up on a wire wheel (careful to not let them go flying) and if all goes well they should be able to slide back and forth freely. A little bit of slider grease (like for the brakes on your car) and they can be popped back in.

You don't ever need to replace the pads if there a little worn all you have to do is put a shim behind the metel plate behind the pad and ...... wala your original pads will last a lifetime.

Grass is always greener over the septic field. Pins in brake assembly must be able to move freely or this adjustment won't work. If they are seized....remove the steel pins from the brake assembly by pounding them out, clean the rust by whatever method works for you, they must freely fit in the brake....it is steel pins versus aluminum brake...SO !....bore is 5/16" originally....remember it is not the Space Shuttle...when the pins are "clean" and they don't move freely....don't be afraid to drill the next size or two to let them move freely. Anti Seize them, then assemble and adjust. Never get in front of the mower "operator" ...chances are you would be rolling the dice.

Apparently it's a gauntlet challenge to find a 0.50" x 1.35" and a 0.50" x 1.25" set of pads for a late 70's/early 80's MTD. So sick of this wild goose chase bullshit.

    • @Goonies-xh3qr
      @Goonies-xh3qr Před 2 dny

Since there was no way I was going to find a new set of pads that fit in this century, I ended up putting a plastic shim behind the thick pad that sits in the outer part of the assembly with the pins and tried testing it as shown in the video with no success. The tires would not grab while lifted off the ground no matter how much I tightened the nut. I found the brake disc would turn while spinning the tires in neutral, but would not turn while spinning the tires in gear. I feared the gears for the brake disc were stripped out. I decided to just start the engine and give it a try while driving and lo and behold I had brake action. While on a hill with a slight slope, I loosed the nut until the tractor rolled freely down the hill. I tested the brakes while rolling down the hill several times and they worked great.
