Lee Kang-hyo 'Onggi Master' - film about a Korean potter

- Our documentary tells the story of Lee Kang-hyo’s search for a beautiful life, through his work with clay and the love of his family. Set against the backdrop of his South Korean studio, it gives an insight into the spiritual journey that plays a vital part in his artistic practice.
Lee is world-famous for combining the traditional Korean technique called Onggi - a technique that allows him to make enormous, often man-sized pots and the puncheong (buncheong) decorating technique. Watch him constructing three of these giant Onggi pots over a five-day period, culminating in an exciting explosion of glaze and colour as Lee sets about decorating them in his inimitable fashion.
His work is exhibited all over the world in major national museums such as the Victoria & Albert Museum, The British Museum, the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, the Art Institute of Chicago and the International Ceramic Museum in Italy.
The music in the film is Samulnori music. Samulnori basically means “four instruments” and the four instruments are Kwaengwari, jing, janggu, and buk.

korean pottery have been so underrated , in ancient time Japanese have hired Korean pottery to learn and steal their secrets, koreans tea bowl are so sought after by Japanese in early times and they produced one fo the most beautiful tea bowls and pottery, they deserved better recognition internationally. his work is so raw and natural and unpretentious.
Here I am 8 months later watching this again, truly inspiring man.

When Lee Kang-hyo played the music and was throwing the glaze on that giant pot, it really fueled something within me. That was such a beautiful and powerful moment. The way he chucked the glaze on with such precision but also chaotically.. It was absolutely entrancing and fascinating. I said "Oh wow" out loud! It was a mixture of performance and pottery art. Absolutely magical.
He trained for years to be a craftsman, went to the mountains and came back an artist. Wonderful transformation.

Pretty sure he'll be announced national treasure one day. Watching his works I can't help but agree and admire. Every single stroke, every single expression, clear or obscured, is simply divine.
The music is Samulnori music. Samulnori basically means “four instruments” and the four instruments are Kwaengwari, jing, janggu, and buk.
It has its roots in Korean traditional percussion-a Korean folk genre
comprising music, folk dance, and rituals, which was traditionally
performed in rice farming villages to ensure and to celebrate harvests.
Each of the four instruments represents a different weather condition-the janggu represents rain, the kkwaenggwari is thunder, the jing the sounds of the wind, and the buk is clouds. The idea of yin and yang is also reflected in these instruments: the buk and janggu, which are made of leather, represent the sounds of the earth, while the metal jing and kkwaenggwari represent sounds of the heavens. Although generally performed indoors, as a staged genre, Samulnori depicts the traditional Korean culture, an agricultural society rooted in the natural environment. Samulnori is characterized by strong, accented rhythms, vibrant body movements, and an energetic spirit.

That trance like drumbeat music and his dance moves are so closely resembling the similar tone of music and dances performed by devotees at the Bengali festival of goddess Durga. I find it very intriguing.

Each time I watch this documentary I cry,
joy for what still exists and sadness for what we have lost...
It is utterly soothing though, that a man would spend his life in the pursuit of beauty for its own sake, living small but feeling big. When the artistry meets a life well lived we can only bow and emulate. I think why so many are touched is because he exhibits all the qualities of perfected humanity : simplicity, humility, absolute sincerity, absence of self importance but complete self respect and love for his work and family. A truly most inspiring man!

I absolutely love pottery and this short documentary is amazing. I saw so many videos and they all transpire some sort of peaceful energy and all the potters seem to be in sick with this because making pottery is a life dedication. I appreciate their work really, it's beautiful and the spiritual part of discovering oneself through this process.
They are traditional korean music which is called Nongak.
This Nongak is folk music played in the countryside to accompany agricultural labor, making working together in groups easier and more enjoyable.
Also when people in the villege celebrated havest, they gathered and played Nongak with instruments such as kkwaenggwari and gong jing.

I find I have so much in common with Mr Lee life. Although I am not pottery maker I work hard and enjoy art and have something missing in my life at middle age. In my 50 I feel my body weaken and become worried. The Love of family is so important. You are blessed to have a business and trade that keeps you home. Many of us have to drive for hours to find work and that is so tiring. Thanks for sharing your story you have alot of wisdom.
