    Vitamin B12, also known as cobalamin, is a water-soluble vitamin with a key role in the normal functioning of the brain and nervous system, and for the formation of blood. It is one of the eight B vitamins. It is normally involved in the metabolism of every cell of the human body, especially affecting DNA synthesis and regulation, but also fatty acid synthesis and energy production. Neither fungi, plants, nor animals are capable of producing vitamin B12. Only bacteria and archaea have the enzymes required for its synthesis, although many foods are a natural source of B12 because of bacterial symbiosis. The vitamin is the largest and most structurally complicated vitamin and can be produced industrially only through bacterial fermentation-synthesis.

    They have not done Schilling test since 2000.. Why mention the test that is not available any longer? Good explanation otherwise. But gastric surgeries/ crohn's disease, celiac can very much effect the absorption as well.

    Thank you for the great lecture. You almost answered my all questions except one. Forgive me if I missed it in the video because I'm not a native speaker. You say pancreatic enzymes digest protein-R (AKA haptocorrin I guess) but what about IF? What is protecting IF from enzymatic degredation?

    Why don't you mention that most B-12 deficient people are meat eaters ? It is an issue with B-12 absorption , not consumption.

      meat or not you can be deficient. Essentially you can be deficient if you don't eat dirt with cobalt.

      What evidence do you have for this claim?
      Here is a medical research of 2012 that breaks down percentages of meat eaters, vegetarians and vegans with B12 deficiency, and actually it's the vegetarians and vegans who are mostly B12 deficient. www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/23356638

      Consumption is the issue, not absorption!

      Yes with me anyway i have always eaten meat and dairy etc and i don't have any symptoms, but test show that i am vb 12
      deficient,

    B12 is heat sensitive and meat is usually consumed in a cooked state.

    No need to eat meat for B12:
    A good way to avoid B12 deficiency and pernicious anaemia is via an easily available cyanocobalamin (vit. B12) spray used under the tongue once a day. This way, it is sublingual mucosal absorption rather than relying on intrinsic factor and mucosal integrity functioning (which are common causes for pernicious anaemia in people, INDEPENDENT whether they are Vegans/vegetarians or cadaverans). B12 is naturally produced by microorganisms living in soil and are therefore found in animals who don't eat others.
    Vegetarians can easily do without supplementation by consuming eggs, tempeh, nori, sauerkraut and black trumpet mushrooms or nutritional yeast regularly.

    hi there. Why are so many people on regular B12 shots to treat their deficiency. Would that be the treatment given if we can't find a cause through the 4 steps or just an "easy fix".

    Hey, what happens if i swallow a B12 powder capsule? how do i protect it from stomach acid inside there when i don't chew on the capsule and etc? i need saliva protection no? the R-protein or Haptocorrin also known as transcobalamin-1 (TC-1)..
    There are sublingual B12's which do secrete this R-protein surly.. but what about B12 capsules? many sell them in capsules.

      +rextbone - B12 needs stomach acid but capsule form bypasses that part of absorption but still needs Intrinsic Factor.

    Shouldn't this be titled Vitamin B12 Absorption? Wouldn't vitamin B12 metabolism describe vitamin B12's two functions/mechanisms as a coenzyme?

    hey dude i just started taking B12 i used to feel tired all the time without energy and im 23 young so if i take B12 will it give me energy?

      B12 helps with normal energy yielding metabolism and a reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Make sure your getting enough sleep and plenty of different vegetables too. A lack of Iron can make you feel crappy too.

      I had a test, apperantly i am vit B12 deficient,i do not have any symptoms of vit B12, and i eat meat dairy etc,i do not know why i can't absorb it.

      +lee bros Chauncey and quincy - Yes definitely as it affects the turn over of your cells in your stomach. You usually get fatigue as one of the earliest symptoms and depression comes quite early on too.

      lee bros Chauncey and quincy if your vegan or a vegi you more then likely have a b12 deficiency as b12 can't be absorbed by eating veg. Fortified foods aren't a natural source either. Maybe go to your gp for a colonoscopy or allergy tests

    ACTIVE form of pepsin is pepsinogen, a proteolytic digestive enzyme, only functional at a PH of 2, not pepsin

      +Goher Saeed Pepsin is the active form. Pepsinogen is the inactive form that the chief cells secrete and HCL converts it to pepsin.

      Pepsinogen is the pro-enzyme, or zymogen, still folded and inactive. Ionic hydrogen unfolds the zymogen which will autolyze itself into active pepsin and digest the inhibitor in the holomolecule. Thereafter pepsin itself will activate other pepsinogen.
