Trust me, high tourists can be annoying too. If they don't sit inside it is a trafic hazard. Most people drinking and smoking weed that are local behave well. It is just the weed smokers and alcohol drinkers that think the place is lawless. Stoned or drunk, if you go outside and make it someone else their problem, you are a PoS.

Amsterdam has sooo much more to offer : open mindness, world class cycling infrastructure, charming canals, nice parks, chill terraces, interesting museums... and so on... you feel so relaxed in Amsterdam

Amsterdam is not just trying to get rid of a certain type of tourist, but a certain type of resident as well: the people who made it such a desirable place to live in or visit in the first place. They have to go, being replaced by yuppies and expats who want their peace and quiet, even in the heart of the city. The tourists they are trying to get rid of are the people I regularly have conversations with in bars and coffeeshops, and they are to be replaced by the type of tourists that only stay in expensive hotels, buy diamonds and maybe visit a museum without ever speaking to a local.

I'm not usually very reactionary towards anything in our culture..........but this gentrification is a freaking plague. It's happening here in Portugal too and I'm genuinely losing the feel and interest in the bigger cities, all of which, I really digged and felt were cool places to hang out. The problem with gentrification it's that it's using some historical buildings for it's own purposes........so actual history is being lost as well! And that is something you can't go back on.
I agree with the lady. Amsterdam is attracting too many undesirables and it's embarrassing. You know the type, they haven't had a good time unless they throw up or end up in hospital getting their stomach pumped from too many different drugs or end up fighting 5 club bouncers.I stopped visiting Amsterdam for the some of the reasons that she pointed out. When I socialize, I do not want to feel like if I'm living in the gutter.
@paulg3012 Why would they ban alcohol? It is the misuse of alcohol by a minority which causes a problem. It's a problem when people drink beyond excess like if it's a competition.
It makes no sense to me to only allow pot to Dutch citizens. It would change the entire identity of the city and weed tourism would vanish overnight. There’s like 5 places in the entire world where you can just walk in and smoke so I think it would be a big hit to their tourism in a country that has already declared they’re in a recession. It’s up to them but weed tourism alone accounts for at least 10% of their GDP 😂
@Hazokny The economy of Amsterdam is dependent on tourism. Cannabis only plays a minor part in the overall GDP. The social problems encountered in Amsterdam is not because of cannabis. The restriction is in the Red Light District not Amsterdam. By the way there is more to Amsterdam than the Red Light District or getting high and excessively drunk.

As a dutchy, I am sad to see the red light district go. It is a cultural hotspot a very unique "old amsterdam" atmosphere with loads of nice pubs and such. (pro tip: go in the lesser visited alleys without all the windows and sexshops.) But being known only for your drugs, alcohol and sex policies is kinda bleh. Whenever I say I am Dutch to a foreigner, I always get the responds like "yheh, I smoked weed yesterday." Many people and especially tourists just can't handle the "freedom" and go way over their own and social limits. So then the government must put strict limitations in place.
I don't even consider weed a drug anymore. Weed and legal prostitution is pretty tame all things considered. I'm surprised the city is trying to tame it.
I'm not dutch, but I feel complete ban for tourists would impact tourism industry too much. I can see a compromise be some sort of a Tourist Weed Card you buy for let's say...50 eur which could be invalidated if a visitor breaks rules
Honestly, I really wish Europe would follow in the direction of North America when it comes to Marijuana legalization. I'm American, it really hasn't changed anything. I think it sucks there are still so many areas here where weed is illegal, and I'm not even a huge stoner. It's mind boggling to me, even in the state I'm from (Georgia, where weed is still illegal) that most people see The Netherlands this way. Most people still smoke weed where it's illegal in the US and it's always been pretty readily available, even before CO and CA legalized it. If you got caught, it was a pretty minor offense as long as it was a small amount. It sucks your country is known for that. I get prostitution, Nevada is also known to be 'seedy' because of gambling and prostitution. Weed/drugs? Silly. Anyway, I'd love to visit your country! Most North Americans want to visit because of the urbanism and transit/bike culture in NL lol, not the drugs.
Some groups are more than a nuisance: I've seen a group with one urinating through the door's post box. That's someone's home he urinated in. Late at night. Nuisance is one thing, but this sort of behaviour is something else.
As a Dutch citizen and former resident of Amsterdam I would welcome restrictions on cheap tourism. So no more air b'nb and 29 euro flights. No more drunks and drug users. Amsterdam is a beautiful city. My family is from there ( from the 1600's) , lets keep it nice and beautiful. I would keep the RLD but just make sure people behave. Drunks should go to jail to get sober and pay a fine on the spot.

Been living in Amsterdam for 2.5 years now, and I'm trying to love it and stick around, but the poor behaved tourists are a major challenge. I really hope that this will change.

I just visited your city for the first time a few weeks ago. You should be very proud. An amazing society, super fit, tolerant, little to no crime visible. You have obviuisly invested in your infrastructure. It was the most amazing city I have ever seen and I am a well travelled. Whatever your doing, keep doing it.
The weed smokers are not being rowdy and shitting on the street. They are sitting comfortably in a warm coffee shop vibing to chill music and having deep and meaningful conversations about the nature of existence.
I love Amsterdam. I have been there 5 times. It is a safe haven for a pothead like me. I love smoking, eating food and walking around this beautiful city. No place in world can give me a good vibe like Amsterdam.
An unpopular opinion here. Most people go to Amsterdam because of it's party scene; Soft drugs, alcohol, red light district ECT. Take that all away and Amsterdam isn't special at all. Minus all those things and Amsterdam becomes just like any other mid-sized European city. BORING.
Not unpopular at all, the only reason I went there 20 years ago was for the party. I wouldn't waste a penny other wise when South America and S.E. Asia exist. You get 4-10x your money's worth in those places and the women aren't 6' behemoths or just foreign hookers.
The main thing Amsterdam had going for it was being the sole place to enjoy cannabis quasi-legally. Now that Thailand, Canada and most of the USA is legal, their tourism is going to drop significantly.
If that is the main thing for you, and you won't visit now, it is working :) More space for people that actually want to live in the city or want to enjoy the things that make the city unique.
As a Dutch guy born and raised in Amsterdam....now living in Los Angeles...these people who complain are not from Amsterdam. They now can some how afford to live there and want to destroy what Amsterdam is about. Geerte Udo is from Leiden and hates Amsterdam with her 3000 followers. It is sad to see how they do it, destroying the culture she has never been part off.

As a Dutch person who grew up outside Amsterdam. I used to love love Amsterdam. The Amsterdam of today is hardly recognisable for most Dutch people, even Amsterdammers themselves. Netherlands has many more gems outside of Amsterdam. Of the big cities in Randstad my favourite city is probably the Hague because it has the old historical architecture as well as the Scheveningen beach. I can't believe im saying that because back in the days I used to dislike the Hague & loved Amsterdam & now it's vice versa. If you really want a unique experience go to Middelburg, beaches of Zeeland, Maasstricht, Arnhem, etc. So many other unique gems in Netherlands outside of Randstad

If tourist were more responsible paddo's wouldn't be banned in the Netherlands. Sure, many people don't like these rules, but the amount of annoying tourists, better known as kuttoeristen, is too damm high.
20 million visitors, let's assume they stay for two days on average for a total of 40 million visitor-days a year, divided by 365 days and rounding it down, that makes 100,000 tourists there on average, every...single....day. The city isn't big enough for that.
With those changes I’m more likely to visit now. I love culture, arts and history. But never felt the need to visit because it reminded me of Las Vegas and I’m not much of a fan.
They wanted tourism in the early 2000s and then they got it. Now they’re saying it’s too much. I agree people should be responsible, mature and respectful when travelling anywhere. It’s a shame the Brits have ruined it for the rest of the world. I think it’s a good opportunity for other European cities to catch the tourists that won’t be visiting this old gem.
I’ve been twice now and going this month I like a smoke as much as the next person but to think people are paying hundreds of £€$ to smoke weed is ridiculous when it’s so accessible in your own country it’s the RLD because lots of customers will need the Dutch courage
I was in Amsterdam last month which left such a good memory with canals, people, red light district. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t smoke Weeds. Just ate the kebabs that’s all, since there’s many Turkish fast food restaurants in Amsterdam.
Took a day trip and found it to be a beautiful city. I'd recommend anyone going for the 1st time to take a bike and canal tour of the city. While the red light district was crowded I didnt witness any disorderly conduct.

This is why is dislike Amsterdam as a dutchman. I feel like a foreigner in my own country, the amount of people in the city centre when its summer is just insane. Sometimes in shops or restaurants they speak English to me first instead of dutch, probably not even knowing any dutch. I would not be suprised if 80% or more of the revenue from most if not all coffeeshops and prostitutes are from foreign tourists. For anyone watching and planning a trip to the Netherlands: go to Utrecht, Leiden, Den Haag (The Hague), Rotterdam, or other cities instead, which are no far from Schiphol Airport, and have yourself an actual good dutch experience with no mass tourism and no coffeeshops, prostitutes and souvenirshops around every corner of the street.
When I was growing up, Amsterdam was a beacon of freedom. It is obviously not anymore, when smoking becomes restricted (I dont smoke), the red light district disappears, and from the responses of the people interviewed, the mentality is not so open and accepting anymore. Indeed there are tourist problems, but the way in which they are addressed smell of progressively coming authoritarianism. This is the case in all Europe, skillfull and very smart change is on the way. There remain the museums, and, of course, the bicycles
I don’t wanna drink and be a nuisance I just want to go and enjoy my time in the coffee shops and trying nice food and seeing what Amsterdam has to offer. It’s a very beautiful place and I can’t wait to visit again

I'm Dutch and was born in the centre of Amsterdam in 1963. I saw it change from a normal city into the drugs, tourist and prostitution abomination it is right now. Expats getting all the houses, the cheap houses in the outskirts going to the immigrants- no I'm not a racist, just happened to work a year CV installtion business there... It was a nice place to live back then. Now I live in Alkmaar, far more better there. I hate that stupid drugs tourism.
In the Netherlans there are a lot of laws that nobody applies. Years ago it was ruled motorcycles couldn't be on the bike roads and guess what? The police controlled it 1 week. Applying a law in the Netherlands? It doesn't exist. I live in Amsterdam and drunk drugged British people are a huge issue( and I don't even live in The Red LightDistrict, I live in the Grachten). They throw bikes on the canals, get into fights constantly, pee everywhere, sing in front of your door at 3 am, etc. But as the guy on the interview said, I haven't seen 1 policeman stopping anyone for smoking, as they don't stop anyone for driving motorcycles in the bike roads. Law in the Netherlands doesn't exist, specially in Amsterdam.

I just went for my 30th in august and had a lovely time. I thought it was really chilled out and I barely saw anyone on the piss. Smoked a fortune of gange and loved every minute. Didn't bother me that I couldn't walk around with it there were plenty of spots to chill and smoke. Awesome city full of awesome people.

I have visited Amsterdam numerous times, every time I stayed at a hostel because it is very expensive. I was attending conferences and couldn't afford to pay for a hotel room. My last employer was a British Dutch Indian nightmare. I didn't meet many British tourists but met young German women (very kind to lend me some clothes after my suitcase was stolen at the railway station) and young Italians looking for drugs and party
@DWTravel I have also traveled to Dublin for conferences and no luggage stolen, staff at airport offered guidance on public transport, hotel offered free bus tour of the city, all in all a very different experience. The German men were badly behaved, they brought their girlfriends (or companions, often well dressed ladies from CEE countries) everywhere, slammed doors in my face and made rude remarks to the Nigerian taxi drivers. On a positive note, slamming a door in my face is not the worst thing a German man has done to me, so I am not going to judge anyone for it
Just coming back from Amsterdam and the RLD, I could say I saw no one peeing out in public on people's property nor sh*ting somewhere they shouldn't. The weed and alcohol was tolerable and very few being so annoying during peak time hours. I think what people don't understand is the access to information has grown so much and people are getting the information so tourism will always rise but it's everywhere that's popular not just Amsterdam. I can speak for myself that even not sober I still respected all the laws and never tried to act out of line especially in businesses along the canal. I think if they start dwindling down the experiences there they will not only lose the tourism but many of the mom-and-pop businesses will lose their traffic which is there because of the atmosphere that the area brings but for the most part, most people I saw drunk or not were respectful to the area and we can't just let some event jeopardize the overall tourist experience. If people do act out of line well there are laws that are in place. I'm from Los Angeles and we are a high-traffic tourist spot, especially in Hollywood which is very similar to the types of tourists Amsterdam gets I think we can coexist with the party-like scene in the neighborhood so as long as residents have privacy and property, and livelihoods aren't disturbed past an acceptable tolerance. But long story short, I saw no serious trouble. Also if they limit access to weed the dealers will certainly make more profit which will introduce more organized crime in the area so it's safer to keep them in place so even more problematic things don't pop up and possibly make the place a danger for tourism.
İ used to be a tour guide in one of the canal boats based out of the Red light district. İ can tell with certainty that some people are amazing, yet, you have people (still not as frequent as one may think from this video) that jump in the canals, pee on people's front door, get naked and just shout (which is probably the worst). İ thank you for being respectful but i think this is a singular experience on a very short term as a tourist yourself.

These are definitely the elites complaining. Nobody who lives in Amsterdam is poor. One floor of a house in the center Amsterdam cost a million Euro's at minimum.
I lived in amstetdam when i was 23 years old and i lived in hostels. I went when spring started and then winter came i was back in Finland where im from. That was my rutine like 6 yesrs. I would still do that, but i found beatyful woman back in Finland. It was the time of life. I was glad to hear that finnish people behave and were polite. I just love that city, the people there are lovevly. Brost to all frends, miss you bros.

Renting a bike and getting lost in the city is what made me enjoy it. I did 36km in one day. If I wanted to smoke weed, which I don't because it gives me anxiety, I can do that at home in Canada because it's more legal here than in the Netherlands.
Tourists and visitors to a place need to be respectful, for way too long, a significant number misbehave. I live in Barcelona, and I absolutely love the place and am passionate when I come across decent tourists and visitors. However, the ones that don't respect are a surge on the city. Finding it funny vomit on a tight street is out of order.
This is so impressive. Most other countries would bend over backwards to have a Sin-City type tourist haven, but it seems many locals prefer making their city more livable and peaceful, instead of being tempted by the potential money and notoriety that would cause. Contrary to popular belief Germany has better laws than Holland. Prostitution is legal with a license and you can walk around with up to 5 grams of cannabis.
Im going at the end of the year to get a break and to smoke looked up the laws before hand its a different culture with different rules show respect to the people who call amsterdam home
I built a bit of expectation around Amsterdam over the years. i had travelled extensively throughout Europe to many, many places. I was sure I'd love Amsterdam. I dont smoke weed (smoked a few times in my life, but never regularly) but the one thing that caused the biggest impact when I finally arrived there to visit...........was the smell! The street smelled of pot in many places. It might have been cool in theory but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. It was also super crowded....I never felt relaxed enough to be able to take the city in. I think I prefered Rotterdam. For whatever reason those days I spent in Amsterdam were really not that great. I'm very open minded and like to travel to all sorts of places...modern...derilict.......all sorts of cultures......but Amsterdam......I dunno.........I wanted to like it, but it wasn't a relaxing experience.
It’s not the same anymore,I miss the old Amsterdam that wasn’t that overcrowded.Sure always was a full living city with a lot of people but it became insane.2020 was a beutiful year while tourism stopped.Felt like a city on its own again,not a tourist attraction.
Plan and simple, Amsterdam is a place to make money, it's a business, the people complaining can go live elsewhere and make room for people who see an opportunity rather than a nuscuance.
Most local Amsterdam people and culture left years ago. With the rise of tourism and other factors, pushed out of their homes and businesses since the late 90s... Without them there is no native social control, no self repair that can curb (bad) behavior and other complex issues. In the 80s the French, Italians, British, Germans and Americans would each year visit by the masses. But there was a native population which would assist them and govern the in flux. There were serious issues back then. But it was not stupid, crazy, tik-tok lined like now. Maximized Tourism eventually decimates all levels of the native social economic and cultural system. Municipality acts like a mother superior. Lacking vision and leadership. Made of people who do not even live in the city nor come from there. Residents have less and less cultural connection with the city. Responsibilities are replaced with their Rights and Demands. Safety and Wellness become the trick arguments to dismantle the cities remaining core culture and push through more and more radical policing, legislation and taxation. The buildings remain... But the centuries of culture that made the city what it was has long left in the wake of mass tourism, political divide and dissimilar leadership. All major cities face this problem. From Amsterdam to New Amsterdam.
Actually it's just after a certain Time rd light district..on weekends n just go outside city center sit on a bench no one will bother go to Vondal Park.... it's still awesome 💯..they won't ban it.. they'll just move it around..
What Amsterdam has to offer? Not Much. High Prices Small Rooms Rude People. I remember when they wanted Tourists now it's to much. After they made enough money to fix City Streets and services. Now come and see our Museum's, sorry but your Expensive Museum's is a one trip experience. Amsterdam is overrated overpriced. Prague is better.

To be honest, not only I smoked weed sitting next to the canal but had a couple of craft beers too (they looked like soda lmao). I had zero issues because I was just chilling by myself.
I'd like to visit Amsterdam, but the sex and drugs tourism puts me off. I want to come for the atmosphere and a relaxing break instead. These curbs the residents are asking for are very, very reasonable. If I was in charge, I would have a bus service at Schipol airport to ship these people off to a man-made island where they can do whatever they want, but the private sectors operating businesses there are in charge of cleaning it up and maintaining it as part of their contracts.
I think that people try at festivals and some creative free places like Ruigoord. How ever sex and drugs have real life consequenties. I heard for example from someone that in a psytrance festival in Hungary they have ambulance pandeling all day long. An other example is the legalisation off drugs in Origon USA. You see people destroy them selfs with hard drugs in public. Not everybody has your best interests 😅
I’ve been here for a day and it is definitely a relaxing atmosphere and plenty of things to do without sex and drugs. With that said, there are coffee shops on like every corner and you can feel the weed smell very often when you pass by so it’s hard to miss.
Amsterdam doesn't though. At least not on this type. There are industries in the city, big offices too, hospitals, universities. For Dutch people, there are shops, there are musea, there is bars, cinema's, theaters, a zoo. They don't need the drunk/high tourists that wreck the city with the bachelor parties. I have worked in this city, and so have some of my friends. Tourists were annoying because they would make getting to and from your job harder if you had to cross the city by bike.
Was there in Oct 22' I was more impressed with Amsterdam than Lodon and Paris!! Love their transit, boating, and bikes! Beautiful! Tourist bring $$$. If they loose the tourist $$$ , does that mean taxes will be raised for the locals?!

Reflecting on my time in Amsterdam, I can honestly say it was far from my ideal living experience. I am genuinely relieved to have moved on. The city seemed to lack vibrancy and authenticity. Instead, it had morphed into a hotbed of artificial tourist attractions, where everything revolved around financial gains for major corporations. Regrettably, I found myself longing for meaningful activities and entertainment, only to realize there was a glaring dearth of options.

Yep. I travel quite a bit throughout Europe. I was so excited about going to Amsterdam. No I don't smoke weed or go for that sort of thing. And it DID feel a bit soulless. I'm not usually very picky when travelling even.........but the atmosphere was a bit opppressive. I couldn't relax. And the smell of weed around some streets left a bad taste in my mouth.
If Amsterdam will lose tourists who come there to smoke and party, I don't think it means their tourism will drop drastically. I think it will just change the demographics of the tourists. You won't get the weed smokers and party goers as much but what you will get are the people who go to places to get the photos and experiences that they see on tiktok, facebook and instagram.
This is what some countries have lost. Respect for others and laws. Getting worsening in some places. Criminals are treated better than the normal regular citizens.
ive never been to amsterdam or netherlands.... i wanted to go and probably will go some day, but this rule is just fine.... as long as its still legal to smoke weed at your own place, its like that in tenerife... you can have/use weed at your own place, but in public its illegal... the law is actually really good even for someone like me who likes to break the rules a little, mainly because well theres alot of kids ofcourse out and about... and them seeing weed,cigarettes being smoked in open all the time or alcohol getting drunk would influence them badly for the future, i dont really use alcohol or drugs, but i remember when i was a kid and walked past the alcohol section in stores... it kinda looked like candy to me, like all shiny and different colors... and alot of other people here had the same, there should def be alcohol only shops too in europe, kinda bad that stores sell alcohol and cigarettes for all the kids to see on display.
just picture yourself living somewere and try to imagine all those who misbehave on your frontporch... keep that in mind when visiting...enjoy your stay!
I think its a great decision to decrease drinking and smoking weed on the streets because Netherlands is a beautiful country and it will be more comfortable for its residents and tourists.
tbf i had a air bnb and i smoked a spliff in the morning outside on street in font of my air bnb, but to my surprise a local resident came out shouting saying im smoking weed in front of her home and its disrespectful so maybe i aided to this new decision
We who live in city areas are tired of tourists! Cities have lost their local culture - often the main reasons for why to many people come to visit. It is the shitty tourist industry all to often politicians too with bad ideas and greedy interest. The prices to live in the centers are too expensive to have to be the country's little amusement parks for foreigners- meaning the local people do not even get to enjoy their own towns . These problems are global.
Sex workers are often only in that situation because they have no other option, majority of them in Amsterdan are Russian immigrants, ask them if they rather do something else that contributes to the Dutch society and 99% will say "YES"

We can't marginalize a whole people because of few.
Most of these issues have more to do with the over consumption of alcohol than cannabis.

Amsterdam is not just trying to get rid of a certain type of tourist, but a certain type of resident as well: the people who made it such a desirable place to live in or visit in the first place. They have to go, being replaced by yuppies and expats who want their peace and quiet, even in the heart of the city. The tourists they are trying to get rid of are the people I regularly have conversations with in bars and coffeeshops, and they are to be replaced by the type of tourists that only stay in expensive hotels, buy diamonds and maybe visit a museum without ever speaking to a local.

I'm not usually very reactionary towards anything in our culture..........but this gentrification is a freaking plague. It's happening here in Portugal too and I'm genuinely losing the feel and interest in the bigger cities, all of which, I really digged and felt were cool places to hang out. The problem with gentrification it's that it's using some historical buildings for it's own purposes........so actual history is being lost as well! And that is something you can't go back on.
I agree with the lady. Amsterdam is attracting too many undesirables and it's embarrassing. It makes no sense to me to only allow pot to Dutch citizens. It would change the entire identity of the city and weed tourism would vanish overnight. There’s like 5 places in the entire world where you can just walk in and smoke so I think it would be a big hit to their tourism in a country that has already declared they’re in a recession. It’s up to them but weed tourism alone accounts for at least 10% of their GDP 😂

The restriction is in the Red Light District not Amsterdam. By the way there is more to Amsterdam than the Red Light District or getting high and excessively drunk.

As a dutchy, I am sad to see the red light district go. It is a cultural hotspot a very unique "old amsterdam" atmosphere with loads of nice pubs and such. (pro tip: go in the lesser visited alleys without all the windows and sexshops.)

Honestly, I really wish Europe would follow in the direction of North America when it comes to Marijuana legalization. I'm American, it really hasn't changed anything. I think it sucks there are still so many areas here where weed is illegal, and I'm not even a huge stoner. It's mind boggling to me, even in the state I'm from (Georgia, where weed is still illegal) that most people see The Netherlands this way. Most people still smoke weed where it's illegal in the US and it's always been pretty readily available, even before CO and CA legalized it. If you got caught, it was a pretty minor offense as long as it was a small amount.

As a Dutch citizen and former resident of Amsterdam I would welcome restrictions on cheap tourism. So no more air b'nb and 29 euro flights. No more drunks and drug users. Amsterdam is a beautiful city. My family is from there ( from the 1600's) , lets keep it nice and beautiful. I would keep the RLD but just make sure people behave. Drunks should go to jail to get sober and pay a fine on the spot.

I just visited your city for the first time a few weeks ago. You should be very proud. An amazing society, super fit, tolerant, little to no crime visible. You have obviuisly invested in your infrastructure. It was the most amazing city I have ever seen and I am a well travelled. Whatever your doing, keep doing it.
The weed smokers are not being rowdy and shitting on the street. They are sitting comfortably in a warm coffee shop vibing to chill music and having deep and meaningful conversations about the nature of existence.

As a Dutch person who grew up outside Amsterdam. I used to love love Amsterdam. The Amsterdam of today is hardly recognisable for most Dutch people, even Amsterdammers themselves. Netherlands has many more gems outside of Amsterdam.
Of the big cities in Randstad my favourite city is probably the Hague because it has the old historical architecture as well as the Scheveningen beach. I can't believe im saying that because back in the days I used to dislike the Hague & loved Amsterdam & now it's vice versa. If you really want a unique experience go to Middelburg, beaches of Zeeland, Maasstricht, Arnhem, etc. So many other unique gems in Netherlands outside of Randstad
And they all have coffeeshops, too!

If tourist were more responsible paddo's wouldn't be banned in the Netherlands. Sure, many people don't like these rules, but the amount of annoying tourists, better known as kuttoeristen, is too damm high.

20 million visitors, let's assume they stay for two days on average for a total of 40 million visitor-days a year, divided by 365 days and rounding it down, that makes 100,000 tourists there on average, every...single....day. The city isn't big enough for that.

I was in Amsterdam last month which left such a good memory with canals, people, red light district. Don’t get me wrong I didn’t smoke Weeds. Just ate the kebabs that’s all, since there’s many Turkish fast food restaurants in Amsterdam.
Took a day trip and found it to be a beautiful city. I'd recommend anyone going for the 1st time to take a bike and canal tour of the city. While the red light district was crowded I didnt witness any disorderly conduct.

This is why is dislike Amsterdam as a dutchman. I feel like a foreigner in my own country, the amount of people in the city centre when its summer is just insane. Sometimes in shops or restaurants they speak English to me first instead of dutch, probably not even knowing any dutch. I would not be suprised if 80% or more of the revenue from most if not all coffeeshops and prostitutes are from foreign tourists. For anyone watching and planning a trip to the Netherlands: go to Utrecht, Leiden, Den Haag (The Hague), Rotterdam, or other cities instead, which are no far from Schiphol Airport, and have yourself an actual good dutch experience with no mass tourism and no coffeeshops, prostitutes and souvenirshops around every corner of the street.

When I was growing up, Amsterdam was a beacon of freedom. It is obviously not anymore, when smoking becomes restricted (I dont smoke), the red light district disappears, and from the responses of the people interviewed, the mentality is not so open and accepting anymore. Indeed there are tourist problems, but the way in which they are addressed smell of progressively coming authoritarianism. This is the case in all Europe, skillfull and very smart change is on the way. There remain the museums, and, of course, the bicycles

I'm Dutch and was born in the centre of Amsterdam in 1963. I saw it change from a normal city into the drugs, tourist and prostitution abomination it is right now. Expats getting all the houses, the cheap houses in the outskirts going to the immigrants- no I'm not a racist, just happened to work a year CV installtion business there... It was a nice place to live back then. Now I live in Alkmaar, far more better there. I hate that stupid drugs tourism.

In the Netherlans there are a lot of laws that nobody applies. Years ago it was ruled motorcycles couldn't be on the bike roads and guess what? The police controlled it 1 week. Applying a law in the Netherlands? It doesn't exist.
I live in Amsterdam and drunk drugged British people are a huge issue( and I don't even live in The Red LightDistrict, I live in the Grachten). They throw bikes on the canals, get into fights constantly, pee everywhere, sing in front of your door at 3 am, etc. But as the guy on the interview said, I haven't seen 1 policeman stopping anyone for smoking, as they don't stop anyone for driving motorcycles in the bike roads. Law in the Netherlands doesn't exist, specially in Amsterdam.

I just went for my 30th in august and had a lovely time. I thought it was really chilled out and I barely saw anyone on the piss. Smoked a fortune of gange and loved every minute. Didn't bother me that I couldn't walk around with it there were plenty of spots to chill and smoke. Awesome city full of awesome people.

Cannabis may no longer be smoked on streets, squares and canals around the red light district. In the rest of the city, smoking pot is still allowed.

I have visited Amsterdam numerous times, every time I stayed at a hostel because it is very expensive. I was attending conferences and couldn't afford to pay for a hotel room. My last employer was a British Dutch Indian nightmare. I didn't meet many British tourists but met young German women (very kind to lend me some clothes after my suitcase was stolen at the railway station) and young Italians looking for drugs and party
That sounds quite exciting and intense.
@DWTravel I have also traveled to Dublin for conferences and no luggage stolen, staff at airport offered guidance on public transport, hotel offered free bus tour of the city, all in all a very different experience. The German men were badly behaved, they brought their girlfriends (or companions, often well dressed ladies from CEE countries) everywhere, slammed doors in my face and made rude remarks to the Nigerian taxi drivers. On a positive note, slamming a door in my face is not the worst thing a German man has done to me, so I am not going to judge anyone for it
Just coming back from Amsterdam and the RLD, I could say I saw no one peeing out in public on people's property nor sh*ting somewhere they shouldn't. The weed and alcohol was tolerable and very few being so annoying during peak time hours. I think what people don't understand is the access to information has grown so much and people are getting the information so tourism will always rise but it's everywhere that's popular not just Amsterdam. I can speak for myself that even not sober I still respected all the laws and never tried to act out of line especially in businesses along the canal. I think if they start dwindling down the experiences there they will not only lose the tourism but many of the mom-and-pop businesses will lose their traffic which is there because of the atmosphere that the area brings but for the most part, most people I saw drunk or not were respectful to the area and we can't just let some event jeopardize the overall tourist experience. If people do act out of line well there are laws that are in place. I'm from Los Angeles and we are a high-traffic tourist spot, especially in Hollywood which is very similar to the types of tourists Amsterdam gets I think we can coexist with the party-like scene in the neighborhood so as long as residents have privacy and property, and livelihoods aren't disturbed past an acceptable tolerance. But long story short, I saw no serious trouble. Also if they limit access to weed the dealers will certainly make more profit which will introduce more organized crime in the area so it's safer to keep them in place so even more problematic things don't pop up and possibly make the place a danger for tourism.
İ used to be a tour guide in one of the canal boats based out of the Red light district. İ can tell with certainty that some people are amazing, yet, you have people (still not as frequent as one may think from this video) that jump in the canals, pee on people's front door, get naked and just shout (which is probably the worst). İ thank you for being respectful but i think this is a singular experience on a very short term as a tourist yourself.

These are definitely the elites complaining. Nobody who lives in Amsterdam is poor. One floor of a house in the center Amsterdam cost a million Euro's at minimum.

I lived in amstetdam when i was 23 years old and i lived in hostels. I went when spring started and then winter came i was back in Finland where im from. That was my rutine like 6 yesrs. I would still do that, but i found beatyful woman back in Finland. It was the time of life. I was glad to hear that finnish people behave and were polite. I just love that city, the people there are lovevly. Brost to all frends, miss you bros.

Renting a bike and getting lost in the city is what made me enjoy it. I did 36km in one day. If I wanted to smoke weed, which I don't because it gives me anxiety, I can do that at home in Canada because it's more legal here than in the Netherlands.
Tourists and visitors to a place need to be respectful, for way too long, a significant number misbehave.
I live in Barcelona, and I absolutely love the place and am passionate when I come across decent tourists and visitors. However, the ones that don't respect are a surge on the city. Finding it funny vomit on a tight street is out of order.
This is so impressive. Most other countries would bend over backwards to have a Sin-City type tourist haven, but it seems many locals prefer making their city more livable and peaceful, instead of being tempted by the potential money and notoriety that would cause. It's admirable behavior and one which many other historic places with high amounts of tourism should take inspiration from

Contrary to popular belief Germany has better laws than Holland. Prostitution is legal with a license and you can walk around with up to 5 grams of cannabis.

I built a bit of expectation around Amsterdam over the years. i had travelled extensively throughout Europe to many, many places. I was sure I'd love Amsterdam. I dont smoke weed (smoked a few times in my life, but never regularly) but the one thing that caused the biggest impact when I finally arrived there to visit...........was the smell! The street smelled of pot in many places. It might have been cool in theory but it really left a bad taste in my mouth. It was also super crowded....I never felt relaxed enough to be able to take the city in. I think I prefered Rotterdam. For whatever reason those days I spent in Amsterdam were really not that great. I'm very open minded and like to travel to all sorts of places...modern...derilict.......all sorts of cultures......but Amsterdam......I dunno.........I wanted to like it, but it wasn't a relaxing experience.
It’s not the same anymore,I miss the old Amsterdam that wasn’t that overcrowded.Sure always was a full living city with a lot of people but it became insane.2020 was a beutiful year while tourism stopped.Felt like a city on its own again,not a tourist attraction.
Plan and simple, Amsterdam is a place to make money, it's a business, the people complaining can go live elsewhere and make room for people who see an opportunity rather than a nuscuance.

Most local Amsterdam people and culture left years ago. With the rise of tourism and other factors, pushed out of their homes and businesses since the late 90s...
Without them there is no native social control, no self repair that can curb (bad) behavior and other complex issues.
In the 80s the French, Italians, British, Germans and Americans would each year visit by the masses. But there was a native population which would assist them and govern the in flux.
There were serious issues back then. But it was not stupid, crazy, tik-tok lined like now.
Maximized Tourism eventually decimates all levels of the native social economic and cultural system.
Municipality acts like a mother superior. Lacking vision and leadership. Made of people who do not even live in the city nor come from there.
Residents have less and less cultural connection with the city. Responsibilities are replaced with their Rights and Demands.
Safety and Wellness become the trick arguments to dismantle the cities remaining core culture and push through more and more radical policing, legislation and taxation.
The buildings remain...
But the centuries of culture that made the city what it was has long left in the wake of mass tourism, political divide and dissimilar leadership.
All major cities face this problem.

What Amsterdam has to offer? Not Much. High Prices Small Rooms Rude People. I remember when they wanted Tourists now it's to much. After they made enough money to fix City Streets and services. Now come and see our Museum's, sorry but your Expensive Museum's is a one trip experience. Amsterdam is overrated overpriced. Prague is better.

I agree. I was there. The drunks (mostly British when I was there) on red light district were horrible. See the sights, grab your shawarma and fries, smoke and buy, go to your room. They we’re falling into canals outside my room
To be honest, not only I smoked weed sitting next to the canal but had a couple of craft beers too (they looked like soda lmao). I had zero issues because I was just chilling by myself.
The river looks murkier and dirtier.
I'd like to visit Amsterdam, but the sex and drugs tourism puts me off. I want to come for the atmosphere and a relaxing break instead. These curbs the residents are asking for are very, very reasonable. If I was in charge, I would have a bus service at Schipol airport to ship these people off to a man-made island where they can do whatever they want, but the private sectors operating businesses there are in charge of cleaning it up and maintaining it as part of their contracts.
I think that people try at festivals and some creative free places like Ruigoord.
How ever sex and drugs have real life consequenties.
I heard for example from someone that in a psytrance festival in Hungary they have ambulance pandeling all day long.
An other example is the legalisation off drugs in Origon USA. You see people destroy them selfs with hard drugs in public. Not everybody has your best interests 😅

I’ve been here for a day and it is definitely a relaxing atmosphere and plenty of things to do without sex and drugs. With that said, there are coffee shops on like every corner and you can feel the weed smell very often when you pass by so it’s hard to miss.

Never been only visited Belgium for a month actually loved it I also Love Camden in the summer is Amsterdam more calmer in Winter.

Amsterdam doesn't though. At least not on this type. There are industries in the city, big offices too, hospitals, universities. For Dutch people, there are shops, there are musea, there is bars, cinema's, theaters, a zoo. They don't need the drunk/high tourists that wreck the city with the bachelor parties. I have worked in this city, and so have some of my friends. Tourists were annoying because they would make getting to and from your job harder if you had to cross the city by bike.
Was there in Oct 22' I was more impressed with Amsterdam than Lodon and Paris!! Love their transit, boating, and bikes! Beautiful! Tourist bring $$$. If they loose the tourist $$$ , does that mean taxes will be raised for the locals?!

Reflecting on my time in Amsterdam, I can honestly say it was far from my ideal living experience. I am genuinely relieved to have moved on. The city seemed to lack vibrancy and authenticity. Instead, it had morphed into a hotbed of artificial tourist attractions, where everything revolved around financial gains for major corporations. Regrettably, I found myself longing for meaningful activities and entertainment, only to realize there was a glaring dearth of options.
This! We won't go into Amsterdam except for shops we don't have in Haarlem, or when we have visitors, we've done all the Museums to death, what else is there? Madame Tussauds? Ripleys?
What are you guys expecting? If you leave the chaotic touristic centre you have plenty parks, great food, events, good pubs. It’s like any other big European city 🤷♂️

Yep. I travel quite a bit throughout Europe. I was so excited about going to Amsterdam. No I don't smoke weed or go for that sort of thing. And it DID feel a bit soulless. I'm not usually very picky when travelling even.........but the atmosphere was a bit opppressive. I couldn't relax. And the smell of weed around some streets left a bad taste in my mouth.
If Amsterdam will lose tourists who come there to smoke and party, I don't think it means their tourism will drop drastically. I think it will just change the demographics of the tourists. You won't get the weed smokers and party goers as much but what you will get are the people who go to places to get the photos and experiences that they see on tiktok, facebook and instagram.
This is what some countries have lost. Respect for others and laws. Getting worsening in some places. Criminals are treated better than the normal regular citizens.
ive never been to amsterdam or netherlands.... i wanted to go and probably will go some day, but this rule is just fine.... as long as its still legal to smoke weed at your own place, its like that in tenerife... you can have/use weed at your own place, but in public its illegal... the law is actually really good even for someone like me who likes to break the rules a little, mainly because well theres alot of kids ofcourse out and about... and them seeing weed,cigarettes being smoked in open all the time or alcohol getting drunk would influence them badly for the future, i dont really use alcohol or drugs, but i remember when i was a kid and walked past the alcohol section in stores... it kinda looked like candy to me, like all shiny and different colors... and alot of other people here had the same, there should def be alcohol only shops too in europe, kinda bad that stores sell alcohol and cigarettes for all the kids to see on display.
just picture yourself living somewere and try to imagine all those who misbehave on your frontporch... keep that in mind when visiting...enjoy your stay!
I think its a great decision to decrease drinking and smoking weed on the streets because Netherlands is a beautiful country and it will be more comfortable for its residents and tourists.
tbf i had a air bnb and i smoked a spliff in the morning outside on street in font of my air bnb, but to my surprise a local resident came out shouting saying im smoking weed in front of her home and its disrespectful so maybe i aided to this new decision

We who live in city areas are tired of tourists! Cities have lost their local culture - often the main reasons for why to many people come to visit. It is the shitty tourist industry all to often politicians too with bad ideas and greedy interest. The prices to live in the centers are too expensive to have to be the country's little amusement parks for foreigners- meaning the local people do not even get to enjoy their own towns . These problems are global.
That B at the end is crazy. If they banned tourist from the coffee shops, the city's economy will take a hit. People want to smoke freely.
Don't care about drugs but leave the sex workers alone. They pay their taxes and work like anybody else
Sex workers are often only in that situation because they have no other option, majority of them in Amsterdan are Russian immigrants, ask them if they rather do something else that contributes to the Dutch society and 99% will say "YES"
I live near the dark hedges which was made Famous via the Game of Thrones here in Northern Ireland and the road that the famous trees are up are being slowly destroyed despite the fact that signage has been put up saying the road is closed when tourists drive down it and it is suffering from over tourism and us locals are fed up with it as it is destroying our national heritage tourists are so selfish
