- One of my goals for this year was to be more vulnerable and honest about my normal day to day life as a professional musician. But one of the things I haven't really talked about is that I'm a church music director (MD) at my local church here in Nashville, TN.
So Today I'll be taking you guys with me on a normal Sunday here at my church, giving you a behind the scenes look at how I run my team and lead in a Sunday service.

Excellent video. Its nice to see content from a "normal" worship team and leader. You face the same challenges shared with most volunteer-based worship teams and you meet them with innovative ideas. Inspiring 👍
I left a church with a work pace like yours as a musician after 7 or 8;yrs. Best decision I ever made honestly. Sunday was a FULL day that I never saw my family and it wore me out
I can see this job can be a tremendous amount of responsibility. I grew up in Church and the worship team was always top notch musicians. No drum cage, no click tracks, no loop station. No fancy stage lights…Just pure raw worship. It was incredible.
@@randolphshield6560wow it’s true god does has favorites , because he has never tested you with incompetent, ignorant, egotistical people in the alter. That’s just their character. When it comes to music it’s even worst.
I was a worship leader in college. Stopped going to church and doing that for a bunch of reasons, but found my way as a professional musician elsewhere. I do miss parts of it. There's something really nice about hearing about your process, seeing what your life is like. Thank you for sharing and for pouring in to all those musicians and your community! That right there is good work!
Can you share your experiences please?
i love the Quarterly concept of fine tuning the teams separate Gifts and Talents, also helping everyone to feel appreciated as you grow together as a Unit ! One thing I've learned thru the years in Music Ministry you never get to old to learn...no such thing. Travis, love the video bro!
I really needed this cause I became MD for the first time and it can be difficult. Thank you so much man 🙏🏾
I was Joseph at one church and it took me a while to realize that I was less "poured" into and more taken advantage of. I could hold my own well on keys, guitar, production as well as my main drums. It was a learning experience. True serving means you're not manipulated and taken for a ride. For me, next time you see Joe, tell em you appreciate him, it does assistant guys like us a lot of good. In general, there is no extra grace for the responsibilities put on us by directors.
I love seeing how much the team has grown! Excellent points Travis and thankful for your contribution to the church that made me who I am. God bless brother.
I love this video and it helped me!!! the one thing I would say is don't be afraid to talk about God directly and mention that He was doing something in the audience
Yes, don't be shy about our God 🙌🏿
Congregation, not audience. If it’s for worship and a gathering of people in regards to worship, it’s a congregation. An audience doesn’t necessarily take part in worship.
@@GauravNicholasMisraNickKwan agree with you, but I think we got the point thank you.
Excellent display of what is involved. Just wish you had shown the vocalist section and given us glimpse of video set-up.
@GauravNicholasMisraNickKwan good catch.
Thanks so much Travis, I've recently joined my churches student leadership which teaches the youth at my church how to be leaders in the church. This videos helps a lot with leadership in the worship scene.
Wow bro this video has been released in the craziest timing, just as im stepping in to leading youth worship and eventually stepping into leading church worship. Love all of the tips you have in here bro
You don't even know how much the various aspects of leading a worship team COMPLETELY resonated with me. Especially the first 4-5 minutes. And I'm not a worship leader (bassist/guitarist). I just would've liked to hear a few more of your chops (especially any slapping and popping [I'll admit it, I'm a white guy who LOVES to slap and pop). I'm going to share this with my worship leader, solely because I know he'll die laughing at how much he agrees with you! Blessings brother.
This video inspired me. Thank you Travis. I already shared it with my Musical director. Thank you fir these hidden gems 💎
Awesome vid. Thank you for the sneek peek into your Sunday work ethic. You are doing this the right way. Giving God the best.
Travis, thank you so much for your service to the Body of Christ. This video was awesome! All of your videos are so meaningful and full of purpose and not to mention knowledge. You don't have to share the way you do, but it is greatly appreciated. May God bless you and your ministry.
Much love to you Trav...great work!!!
Great Video. During the years that I served as the music director, we did (or tried hard) to do much of this. Prepping for my musicians, gradual training, number system, workshops, etc. All while maintaining a high demand, full time management position in the tech sector. Gruelling at times, but personally rewarding. Where I am now, I try now to be the most supportive and responsive team member, knowing what challenges the Worship Leader has.
Again, great video.
It was a pleasure watching and a blessing to all
Thank you Travis. God bless you.
This is great! Thanks for sharing! Good practical points that can be used and adapted in my local setting. 👍🏾
Great video! As a recently-named MD, especially through the transition of getting a new Lead Pastor and, much more recently, a new Worship/Creative Arts Pastor, all of this information is so valuable. Blessings!
Thank you sir travis❤❤ your videos help me to improve not only in bass but also as a musician thank you for your advices more videos to come❤❤❤❤
Thank you!! This was soo amazing, I was actually seeking to how better my team and this helps a lot!!! :)
Thank you Travis!

Thank you Travis. This video was very helpful and inspiring
This is very informative video. Your doing very good travis🙏 thank you brother

Great video!
Great insight for those of us in praise and worship teams!
Great info about quarterly clinics!
Thank you so much! This was enlightening and encouraging!
Amazing, loved hearing this.
Travis, this side of things was awesome to see.
Wonderful insights!
Thanks for sharing bro!
Keep up the good work for the Lord's Kingdom!
The Lord will re-pay your faithfulness!!
Blessings!
People really don’t know how much work it’s takes to be on a worship team that actually strives for excellence every Sunday. God using the practice and preparation to usher in the spirit of God. Not by us, but through us. I can’t wait to get up at 6am every morning to sing and play for the Lord every Sunday. God bless you brutha! Everything you said was God sent and without a spirit of pride! Keep it up!
Great material your passion shines through.
I love this video and I could feel the present of God while listening to it. God continue to bless and keep you brother
true
This was great! Thank you for sharing, we definitely appreciated your perspective!
You're a beast 🔥🙌🏾😂
Great insight and a different perspective on directing. Thank you for sharing your ministry. GBU
I enjoyed the video. Good stuff....... the kingdom really needs this across the board.
Bruh.
You seem like a great leader and musician. Good luck in your musical pursuits!🇨🇦
Great video! My first thought was, "how can you make sure your still worshiping in and moving The Spirit while playing with a loop or track" but it sounds like you guys still do that very well and leave room for spontaneous worship! Love your content - God Bless!
Thank you for the tips and insight. God bless you
Thanks so much for this video. I play guitar at my church and was asked to serve as the MD. I have a lot to learn and this was very helpful.
Md Travis goes crazy 🔥🔥🔥
Awesome dude! I'm not a follower of religion, but I am a musician and I appreciate any musician who has both your skill and passion. I'm from Australia so I'm probably not going to be at the service, however, I'd attend every Sunday to hear you perform if I lived a little closer. Well done.
PS. When I was young I'd go to a church band practice on a Saturday, I'd take my amp and guitar and they'd give me a stand and sheet music to follow along. Best practice I ever had, It forced me to improve better than any lessons I might have paid for. I just heard them one day and wondered in, very nice people, very welcoming.
Wow! I really love the video and have learnt so much from it. Thanks so much bro. God bless you
- Josiah from Nigeria.
Very good insight into being a worship leader.
Our worship leader for the past 6 years just stepped down so we are on the hunt for a new one. But these are some great things to look for or ask about in the interview process.
Excellent Travis!!
Excellent sharing of your knowledge sir. Thank you. Our church is currently searching for a new worship director and I plan to share this video with the search team. God bless 🙌.
I really appreciate the precision and kindness you brought to this video. This is a video I can recommend to those musicians who are secularists (or members of denominations that don’t have a prosylitizing mandate).
Thank you!
Great topic, well spoken I agree with everything in this video.
Great video man! love the content.
Thanks for sharing your wisdom.😊
LOVE YOUR WORK BRO SOUTH AFRICAN FAN & FELLOW MUSICIAN
Loved this video. Very informative.
Very insightful, thank you!
bro, your amazing.
Very good video! Thanks for the look into the inner workings of your team! I've been on several teams in the last 20 years! Each with their own quirks and dysfunctions! Right now, we're in a pretty good place where I'm serving. Our problem seems to center around a stable drummer! We have weekly rehearsals, and that's never been an issue. However, new leadership is much more forgiving about rehearsals being missed, whereas last leadership focused on the members being there and plugged in or not being able to play that week. One style, too strict, one style too loose! Always a balancing act! The idea of a monthly clinic is very attractive, though! Musicians sitting around and picking each others brains just seems like a very productive session! Thanks again for this video!
such a blessing. I've longed to be a part of something like this. bless you.
Thank you for sharing broth. The Key to everything you have implemented is Humility and Discipline from the Other Members. Being a Follower is not being 2nd or 3rd in the queue. It is a True Hearts that wants the Progress of the Church. To be Honest I had my bad experience with my own team and i've been misunderstood trying to bring some '' structure'' in the music. Have you been also through that sort of challenge ? if yes please share to encourage broth. The Lord God bless you for all your Videos.
travis is a beast! 🫡🫡
Can you give a tutorial on how you set up your tracks on Ableton before service, share why you make certain choices while creating the track, and then show why/how those choices are effective in a live setting?
I’m hearing Ableton is great for live church gigs. Right now I’m using garage band and have gotten along well using loops but it’s not the easiest when we are transitioning from song to song.
By the way… GREAT VIDEO! So informative, great content, and also very inspiring.
Amazing, Amazing content!!!
Thanks for your sharing and service, I'd love to know more about Church Music Director to serve in my local church. God Bless You!
This was a blessing bro!
Keep up the great work brother.
My bro.Travis is a great musician! Been following him for a bit😎
Excellent Information. I play drums and our Church we rehearse on a Thursday Night for 3-4 hours where we have prayer service before Morning Worship. I love the fact the band rehearse 1 1/2 hour before the singers come in.
Thank you. Super helpful.
Great info and perspective!
This video earned you a subscriber...great job buddy very helpful and practical
Very educational towards worship ministry and what it is all about
I think this was a great video about the things around being an MD that most people wouldn't get or see. A lot of helpful tips and advice. I would love it if you broke down some steps of how you started from the just a loop and now have the in ears and talk back. Im sure others have made videos like it but I really appreciate your style of presentation.
Very insightful and inspiring
Hey Travis. Good work

Great video man !!!
thanks so much for sharing
Excellent!
This was very good!!
Really love this video. Real plain and simple. Quick question, would it be possible to get tutorial videos of your bass cam angle from your Sunday services?
Very inspirational.
Great video!!
Great clinic on leadership
I’m a pastor. Also a seasoned musician. I have my church band doing the number system as well. They thought I was crazy at first. But now it helps so much. None of the had ever done any studio session work or anything so never had been exposed to it.
