  • Recording of E. E. Cummings (1894-1962) reading his poem "i thank You God for most this amazing" from his book "XAIPE."
i thank You God for most this amazing
day:for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky;and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes
(i who have died am alive again today,
and this is the sun's birthday;this is the birth
day of life and of love and wings:and of the gay
    great happening illimitably earth)
how should tasting touching hearing seeing
    breathing any--lifted from the no
    of allnothing--human merely being
    doubt unimaginable You?
(now the ears of my ears awake and
now the eyes of my eyes are opened)
The recording is from New York on May 28, 1953, and was on an old LP I found at a garage sale.

One of the greatest poets of all time -- an ecstatic outpouring of gratitude and thanksgiving. I read somewhere that he first conceived of this outpouring of gratitude after being released from incarceration by the Germans during the 2nd world war. I don't know if this is true. What a gift to hear him recite it, with the phrasing, pauses and resonances that bring it to life from the place where it was first conceived.

Wow. Just, Wow. Thank you so much for posting this. My choir is singing Gwyneth Walker's passionate setting of this ecstatic poem for the 30th anniversary of the choir. Hearing this makes it resonate even more deeply.

What a magnificent reading of one of my all-time favorite poems by none other than the author himself! So much feeling in those words! It's way beyond just words, beyond poetry, entering realms of prayer and praise. Thank you!

My first A in college was an analysis of this verse. It has all the spirit of spirituality without the oppression of religion. But why does every New England aristocrat who went to Harvard adopt an English accent? Is it some fraternity requirement?
