Wow. Just, Wow. Thank you so much for posting this. My choir is singing Gwyneth Walker's passionate setting of this ecstatic poem for the 30th anniversary of the choir. Hearing this makes it resonate even more deeply.

My first A in college was an analysis of this verse. It has all the spirit of spirituality without the oppression of religion. But why does every New England aristocrat who went to Harvard adopt an English accent? Is it some fraternity requirement?

One of the greatest poets of all time -- an ecstatic outpouring of gratitude and thanksgiving. I read somewhere that he first conceived of this outpouring of gratitude after being released from incarceration by the Germans during the 2nd world war. I don't know if this is true. What a gift to hear him recite it, with the phrasing, pauses and resonances that bring it to life from the place where it was first conceived.

Writes beautifully but never been keen on his diction. What a poem though.
