Episode summary:
A storm rages in Seattle. Izzie is very disappointed by her date with Alex, and Meredith is upset with Derek. They both complain to George, which drives him crazy. At the hospital, Cristina has a patient that uses porn as a pain killer and Meredith takes care of an Asian girl who needs to see a Shaman before surgery. for everyone ripping on this scene, it is iconic. Meredith was a woman who had a very bad avoidant attachment style. She never knew love, her mother neglected her and dad was never there. She never took men seriously and kept friends at arms length. Then, one night she goes home with a guy she hits it off with at the bar & it is fireworks. Her entire character arc is her battling against her coping mechanism (avoidance), because Derek was the one. And she did everything she could to push him away and fuck it up. NOW, Imagine that point when you are dating someone and you realize that your feelings are turning into love. That awkward stage of a relationship where it is casual turning into something more serious. Well, that was the point where Derek's estranged wife (they were separated) decides that she wants to reconcile with her husband after being out of his life for a year. Derek wasnt a player choosing between two women, he was a separated single man trying to move forward with his life, beginning to find someone right for him & he realizes that his complicated relationship with his ex wife needs closure.

I just did this exact thing. There is this girl I really liked for some time now and who I have just been too afraid to tell but I had the feeling she liked me too. Every time we spend time together it just made my heart feel happy and we shared much laughter. So the pain of hiding my affection grew so strong that just recently I ended up calling her and telling her. She said she was very overwhelmed and replied a day later that she would like to just stay friends. Of course it made me a little sad, but you know what? The happiness of no longer carrying around that burden was so liberating. I feel free now. And while she may not be the girl in my future I feel like it definitely helped me a lot to come clean with myself.

One thing, some of you guys don't get is that Meredith NEVER had love all through her life. She was neglected by her mother and abandoned by her father. She didn't have any siblings growing up. She never knew what love was. Then comes in Derek, the first person to EVER give her love and he wants to leave her too. Of course she would beg. Is it pathetic? Yes from a third person POV. Is it bad? Maybe. Is it understandable? YES. Some of you guys should learn to look at the context first. Child neglect comes with a lot of issues. idk, I’m at season 2 currently, does he get any better? because anytime I’m almost won over again by his (admittedly) great hair or very much soothing voice he just turns around and strings along these two women like an utter hypocrite. am I supposed to pity him here? like, I was kind of still on his side when Addison first came in and the conflict was just about him not telling Meredith because he couldn’t deal with the pain or whatever, but now that he has taken her back in a heartbeat after running his mouth off about how ‘evil’ she was for an eternity and literally BEGGING Meredith for a date in season 1?? yeah no he deserves neither of them at this point, has has some serious damage to undo if he’s gonna get my sympathies back.
As much as this love declaration might be nice in my eyes Lexie's love declaration to Mark in 8x22 is the best one. Its so much more raw and emotional and what she says is so deep and unfiltered and love filled and relatable and the emotion in her voice and her stumbling over her words make it so real. That love confession isn't perfect but that is what makes it perfect. Not to say that this isn't good because it is but it's just my opinion.
