Every time I watch this, as much as a liberated woman as I am, just like Meredith, I get exactly why she told him this. This kind of love in particular SUCKS because no one else (like Derek) gets just how much it takes to put it all on the line and to say this face to face to someone you feel like this for. All you're seeking in this moment (though humiliating) you just want and need is reciprocity. Sometimes in "The Ex-Factor" (song by Lauryn Hill who sang about it beautifully, it's not quite as simple as putting all your cards on the table. Though Derek and Meredith are the exception because of their love story (which IS A TV SHOW!), it's still hard to get here in REALITY. Finding someone to defy the odds with you and run off into the sunset or moonlight is hard in today's dating pool or whatever we're calling it because people don't court, people don't want relationships or need what they once did. So much has changed and it's a shame because it's a breakdown I don't see being repaired.

Gosh I was totally this generation! We crowded around the one TV in the dorms to watch this show like it was crack. Shonda was a star from the beginning! But wow yeah! This was happening simultaneously as Sex and The City was on so there was quite a bit of this kind of Carrie / independent but hopeless romantic character.
