France declares state of emergency in New Caledonia following deadly riots

- France declared a state of emergency in New Caledonia on Wednesday after lawmakers in Paris voted in favour of a bill allowing French residents who have lived in the territory to vote in provincial elections, prompting deadly riots in the region.
Government spokesperson Prisca Thevenot said the declaration, which will come into force at 8 p.m., was “precisely to bring back calm and serenity.”
The unrest in New Caledonia resulted in the deaths of three young Indigenous Kanak, according to one official.
Supporters of New Caledonia’s independence fear the move allowing residents to vote in provincial elections will dilute the vote of Indigenous Kanak.

How are we going to get Europe back to the way it was? I grew up enjoying Canada and now when I want to move to Europe where I'm from... Now it's a mess there. So disappointing. I'm sorry but after 10 years those French citizens are New Caledonia citizens as well, it's now their home, they have every right to vote in provincial elections. And the local people have absolutely no right to declare independence unless they make up the vast majority of the people on the Island, which they do not. If they can't live in peace under French democracy then they are going to be violent and murderous no matter what government is in charge. Could you imagine what they would do to the French that live there if they ever did get "independence". Sounds like warmongering to me. Put these riots down and then move on.
