Kemper Stage/Kabinet or Kemper PowerHead/Guitar Cabinet???
While I agree- I like the form factor of a traditional head- it's hard to beat the value of the Stage. Especially when factoring in the additional foot switch needed for the head and it's portability
@@LiamPolinski that’s exactly the reason I got into the stage first. I was still pretty on the fence about kemper tech, so the price attracted me, as well as the fact that I wouldn’t need to go all out with a remote, cable, cabinet etc. I’m a believer now lol
I completely understand the points you made in the video. I have a powered Kemper head, some standard cabs and 2 Kemper Kabinets (unpowered). I prefer Kemper with real cabs. My favourite setup though (and what I am using) is Guitar -> tube compressor (Effectrode PC-2A) -> Kemper -> Fryette PS-2 Power Station -> real cabs. That with the tube bias etc turned to 0 in Amplifier section of Kemper sounds the best to me.
@@volv That sounds like an effective chain! Probably some nice tones coming outta there! Do you always run stereo?
@@DanMmusic I like to run stereo but cannot do that now with Fryette PS-2. It's not a stereo power amp. I have a Palmer Mach 402 stereo solid state power amp which does the job well for the price but not as good as Fryette. I was using it with 2x kemper kabinets in stereo before. These days if I specifically need stereo I usually just use my studio monitors. Otherwise I am fine with mono connected to two different cabs. I have both options connected at the same time. Ideally I would get a stereo tube power amp (Fryette has some but they are expensive!) but I bought Fryette PS-2 as I wanted to have a great attenuator as well.
Hey dude - really appreciate your videos. We have a lot of overlapping preferences and gear choices (so maybe I’m biased! :)), but thanks for doing this. I also am continually impressed with the quality of your videos, and frankly am surprised you’ve not got 100x more followers. I read somewhere that building a CZcams base can take 2 years of grinding…so please keep it up! Best of luck, and thanks again for the good content. Ps. I have 3 Filmosound 385s, 2 el84 versions and a 6v6 version; let me know if you’d like to do some Kemper profile swaps! :)
Thanks so much man! Words like those validate what I'm doing here!
EL84 Filmosounds huh... those are some rarer models for sure! Can you send me a contact form over my website, lets talk there!
Great content brother. And I love your studio. You got a new subscriber today.
Hey thanks so much! Tried a bit of a new backdrop arrangement on this one, I think I'll keep it!
@@DanMmusic That Matchless looks amazing as well. What model is it? And how versatile is it?
@@jeremystone2658 Its an HC-30r from 2019 I believe. Very versatile, albeit heavy to take to a gig so it mainly stays in the studio. Sounds GREAT through the Ox too. The cabinet is actually a 1995 ESD 2x12, but the guy that owned it before me swapped out the original speakers for Vox-branded greenbacks. I've heard theres some magic in the original Matchless speakers, so I'm on a casual hunt for the original set.
I'm just curious what do you find makes the most accurate profiles of your amps when playing thru your powered toaster... making profiles with mic's or using a loadbox like your Ox? I have a powered toaster and want to capture my amps to play thru a cag also. Curious what method you prefer for making profiles.
My favorite way of using the kemper now is to run it through a real guitar cab. I just grab some direct profiles off the ox box when I do that, although a buddy recently said that he thought the mic'd profiles through the guitar cabinet felt more lively. I'd always just say experiment and find what you like the best.
Kemper stage + seymour duncan power stage 700. That’s what I use now. The exact sound of the powerhead BUT with a STEREO power amp to run 2 cabinets. AMAZING
Stereo powered amps sounds incredible!
Powerhead through a Recto 412. Using high-end profiles that are profiled through the same cab, so it transfers beautifully live and loud moving air, along with the benefit of the perefct mixed tone to FOH.
thats the ideal situation! I'm checking out more merged profiles and using IRs on direct profiles now, experimenting with getting the tone as correct as possible.
I just bought one and I am going to be using it with my in ear monitors so no more lugging amps, I will use the mixer's monitor channels for my mix. Easier on da back with no amps or cabs to haul.
Definitely nice for the convenience! Which did you get? PowerHead or Stage? Or Rack?
Hi. Are kemper rack more powerful and sound the best than kemper stage? How about you?
I made the switch primarily because I wanted that integrated power amp. So it could be called "more powerful", but on a basic level, the stage can do everything the rack or the head unit can do, and in a smaller and cheaper package!
I run mine through a Power Station PS100. It sounds great through many profiles but the majority of profiles sound terrible that way. I just don’t use those. The Tone Junky “Direct” profiles are mostly usable and he has quite a few. Michael Britt has just a select few direct profiles. But his are great.
I'm finding I like the direct profiles the best, as opposed to whatever Kemper does when they bypass the "cabinet" block. Luckily the kemper still sounds great through studio monitors with the mic'd profiles.
I've really been enjoying the MBritt Bass pack, and all the direct profiles in there. I happen to have a nice JBL 1x15 cabinet, and any of those profiles really gets the floor moving when it comes to a bass amp sound.
Some people says the Power Kabinet sounds best at bedroom volume. Do you have an opinion on that ?
It sounds pretty decent at all volumes given that it is a full range speaker, but that's a good and bad thing. If you are looking for the power Kabinet to sound like a guitar amp, it may not get there. But for it to sound like a Kemper through studio monitors that slightly leans towards different speakers... it gets there at all volume levels
@@DanMmusic thank you !
I’m gonna agree with you. I appreciate the innovation and products coming from Kemper. The stage has the remote built in. Bonus. But if I’m buying today l would go for another toaster, powered, white. I love Kemper. Kemper 2.0 is gonna be epic.
I'm a big fan of the powered aspect, its not something I thought I'd be wanting but its something I'm very happy to have now!
I run my Kemper to the house. On the monitor out l remove the cab impulse and run into a 2x12 or 4x12 cabinet with GT 75’s. It sounds great to me and hits me in the back.
I love my tube amps and pedals. I do have a Kemper and a helix. The Kemper needs a pedal to help it with sound and feel. The helix as well plus a lot of tweaking. The best modeler tbh is overlooked and much less money and comes with power is the Yamaha 100hd double modeler. Overlooked and underrated $800 new and less used. I mostly play my amps and really just one pedal. Took years to learn and yrs to get good gear. if I get that quad cortex and it needs a pedal I will return it. I don’t need another item I have to tweak. And it should come with power as well. The price has gone up too.
Huh, I haven’t checked out that Yamaha modeler. Hopefully the quad cortex is the answer to all modelers. For new tech it certainly seems promising.
@@DanMmusic I just saw this. I just took my name off the quad cortex list. I end up going back to my amps. We need money and I can’t keep buying modelers/profilers that I barely use. Yep the Yamaha double modeler. Nobody talks about it. It sounds and feels great. It comes with power. I believe either their marketing was not on par with it or I’m not sure but may not be loud enough on stage. I don’t gig so I just don’t know. But yes just bring the head and it just needs a regular guitar cabinet. Doesn’t even need any pedals and I’m a huge pedal addict. I swear I think players just like tweaking all day. I want to plug in and play and as I said I’m letting great amps sit there while I struggle to get a good sound and both units I mentioned before need a pedal to help sculpt it’s sound. Anyway, going to check out your other videos and see the latest. Cheers.
@@Utubewrk123 I feel ya on the quad cortex. Amps are king for a reason. Personally, I'm finding myself relying so much on just one or two Kemper profiles right now, it almost feels like I've only got one amp when in theory I have the sound of thousands.
I'm surprised at how boxy the Kemper Kabinet sounded in comparison. And a little disappointed.
Yeah it's definitely got a boxy quality to it. I think its a jack of all trades, although its far from a master of any of them.
Title kinda misleading. It is kinda obvious the stage is meant for live use. I would never expect it to have a power amp. Now try using your toaster in a live set up. You need all you described plus a remote. You now have the exact same amount of pieces to carry to a gig as you would with the stage. Stage, power amp cab/ or power amp and cab. 3 total pieces. Toaster with amp, remote and cab. 3 pieces. The point is kinda moot.
Hey Matthew, thanks for the comment! The point of the video was to say that getting the stage/remote with the power amp option was the better choice for me. I've actually already been saved by having the power amp option at a gig, as for whatever reason the venue we played at didn't think we needed monitoring (!?). It was a quick jaunt to the car to grab whatever passive cab we had, and just have it acting as my own guitar amp.
I definitely dont think the stage is worse in any way. I could see using both at some point, but for right now the powered toaster/remote made the most sense for versatility's sake. In a way, thats sort of the beauty of the kemper, as you can scale it down or up fairly substantially and still have a great sound. Not sure if you saw one of the comments way down at the bottom, but he's suggesting everything sounds like garbage until you bring a tube power amp into the equation. tbh, that's where I draw the line as to what I'm willing to bring, mainly because I'm sick of the reliability issues with tube amps. This is all my opinion and yours may vary a ton from mine. I appreciate you checking out the video though!
Why the heck did you buy the stage in the 1st place?? I think it's "your bad" you should have educated yourself more on the capabilities of the Stage..
thanks for sharing your criticism? I guess? I'm not the first person who's ever changed their mind after using a product for a little while. All I did was get something with more features. I had gigs that the stage was great for over the last few months with reopening, now I have other gigs that the powerhead is going to be better for. Might even still keep the Stage if work warrants it.
Your sound with the power head is terrible. Powered cab the same. Through the matchless was bad. The people that think they sound best through tubes are right. Did you try. Your gonna come on soon and admitt this inset it. Just my opinion.
