- NOTE: This video teaches the Gounod version of Bach's Prelude. Basically, there's a bar around 2:40 that "doesn't fit", but appears in the Gounod version. Read more about it here:

In this video you will learn to play Bach's Prelude in C Major, from his Well Tempered Clavier. The piece will be performed, with full notes & fingering shown in screen. Then, I'll discuss some of the points you should watch out for while practicing. Bach's Prelude is a great piece for late beginner / early intermediate piano players, because:
1. It sounds sophisticated and mature, and:
2. It's easy to learn to play, relatively speaking. This is because of its fairly repetitive nature: the bars all follow a very repetitive structure, so you really only have to learn a single pattern and then just change the notes from bar to bar (except for the last couple of bars).
Bach's Prelude in C major is one of the 24 pieces in his Well Tempered Clavier. From Wikipedia:
"The Well-Tempered Clavier (German: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier),[1] BWV 846--893, is a collection of solo keyboard music composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. He gave the title to a book of preludes and fugues in all 24 major and minor keys, dated 1722, composed "for the profit and use of musical youth desirous of learning, and especially for the pastime of those already skilled in this study." Bach later compiled a second book of the same kind, dated 1742, with the title "Twenty-four Preludes and Fugues." The two works are now considered to make up a single work, The Well-Tempered Clavier, or "the 48," and are referred to as The Well-Tempered Clavier Book I and The Well-Tempered Clavier Book II respectively.[2] The Well-Tempered Clavier and Twenty-four Preludes and Fugues are generally regarded as being among the most influential works in the history of Western classical music"

Bach's prelude is a really great piece to learn is you are a beginning/intermediate pianist, since it's (1) repetitive and not very complicated technique-wise, and (2) sounds very sophisticated (well, it's Bach, so it really IS sophisticated!).
For those of you who are interested, the "chords" played are also spelled out on the screen (technically, Bach's music is not based on "chords" so this is just a simple guideline provided by myself).
Enjoy!
Hey I think the link to the sheet music is broken, it's a shame because I really love this piece and the way you teach! Could you check it out please? Thank you!!😊

@@benjaming.5722 There is a book "How to Play Piano" by James Rhodes; he links to the piece on his site: www.jamesrhodes.tv/shop/how-to-play-piano/

The book is all about playing this piece, directed at absolute beginners.
the best success that ive had was by following the Turbo Piano Secret (just google it) without a doubt the most incredible plan that I have ever followed.
I have never played or touch piano all my life . With your tutorial I managed to play. Sat for 4 hours - my wrist and fingers cramped; but it was worth it. I am a zero but your method works for me. I wish I can let you listen to how I play. It won't be good but it has a melody! THANK YOU! YOU ARE AN AMAZING MUSIC TEACHER!
Thank you so much for your kind words. Everyone starts from zero, so don't let that deter you! It's all a question how much we practice. Persevere and I'm sure you'll do great! Good luck!!!

hey i wonder if you have continued to play piano, it has been 6 years i think you have mastered playing already 😄
Any updates on your progress?
@@VenomTheCat no I didnt continue. I didnt have piano , couldnt afford it.
This prelude makes for a great chord study, and it's so beautiful! I like how you label the chords in addition to showing people what notes/fingers to use - it's good to understand what it is you're playing!
I like the chord labels also.
I know this music since I was boy, never imagined myself playing this piece. Few months ago I bought keyboard and learned this music from your tutorial, & this is the first piece I am able to play completely. Just want to say thanks. -Regards, from Borneo.
Wow, I am honored! Your comment is very touching. I wish you all the best and lots of luck in your piano playing.
I just wanted to let those people commenting without a google+ account that CZcams has made it impossible for me to reply to you guys. Please do not take my lack of response to mean I haven't read your comment (I read all of them and reply to those I can). - MangoldProject
I don't have a frieking Google-Pluss account! I don't even know what Google-Pluss is. Maybe your computer is just old and you need to get a new one.
Anindita Chatterjee Perhaps if you weren't so rude you would receive a reply .
Maybe you could learn some manners before posting again .? ie. when a talented piano player goes to the trouble of uploading a series of FREE extremely helpful
tutorials the normal educated response is '' Thank You '' . Not sure if there are any
CZcams vids on Good Manners but , if there are , try watching a few.
+MangoldProject hi everyone ,if anyone else wants to discover learn to play keyboards try Lomonting Piano Player Mentor ( search on google ) ? Ive heard some interesting things about it and my work buddy got great results with it.
+Anindita Chatterjee you don't know what google + is??? laughs
+2msvalkyrie AMEN! hi 5 for saying that :D
Wow, I've finally found a great online piano lesson for a full song!!!! Thank You!!
Love this piece. Hadn't heard it until I heard Jace playing it on the piano when I watched The mortal instruments. It's really beautiful.
I am very excited to find this tutorial. It enormously boosted my confidence as a piano starter.
Like a kid on Christmas morning I can't wait to unwrap this piece. I've learned the first few bars and am anxious to complete this masterpiece. This piece has always haunted and shaken me. Never in a million years thought I'd come face to face with it in my now 9 month journey into the piano. I am sooooooo happy how you simplified it. Even though this journey is strictly for ME, I can only imagine how my F&F will respond if they paid me a surprised visit only to hear me inside playing Bach as they arrived on my front portch...lol. Thank you, thank you, thank you for this gift.
@Hiandbye95,
First, sorry for not replying directly to your post, but courtesy of Google+ it's now impossible to reply to some posts (I think you need to have a Google+ account).
Bach could weave masterful harmonies, but during the Baroque period people thought more in terms of counterpoint than "harmony (chords)+melody". If you listen to Bach's music you'll be able to hear this sort of writing, where there are many "lines" that interact with each other harmonically. I guess I was being a bit too cryptic and could have worded myself more clearly. I hope this clarified my intentions a bit :).
MangoldProject Thanks for sharing, it makes me realize how much I have to learn this year.
i am a beginner and this is the best setup i've found on youtube for learning quick pieces of music without reading knowledge! thank you, sir.
Hope you had fun learning, and good luck in pharmacy school. I remember having to balance my own studies and piano playing back in the day, but if you stick to practicing you will not regret it.
HEy...loved the Bach in C Major...and how its played, and your set of instructions! For me its been well over 60 years since I last seriously played anything...piano, organ, trumpet, clarinet, et cetera. I had ALWAYS been into music, even as a 5 year old...and a natural harmony singer (Church music of Bach of course!), the Naval Concert Choir (way back when) and later, even Barbershop Style (love it!)...but since my first (deceased)mentally ill wife took all the joy out of EVERYTHNG, I just listened whenever I could. Currently I'm thinking about getting an electric keyboard and doing what comes naturally...grins...
0:06 "welcome bach"... :D
Haha, I'll add that to my Liszt of composer names' puns :)
good one!
I would like to make more puns, but I'm too Bizet :)
@Paulo Jean Manalo: it's a Roland RD-700GX (two generations old by now, superseded by RD800)
oh thnx can you make a tutorial for moonlight sonata 3rd movement? please thnx
I cant wait to start studying this piece. Thank you so much for making it easier for us to understand the chords
Absolutely excellent! Thank you. Clear explanation of a beautiful piece. The labelling of the chords should outline the importance of this lovely piece to all beginners.
You are the best and most thorough piano teacher on youtube. Thank you and I can proudly say I know and play this beautiful piece!
Aimee Shaw a
Thank you! Never realized that this piece was so easy to play. I found it a good exercise to learn other songs as well. My problem is coordinating what right and left hand are doing. Learning this piece actually helped improving that :)
Your tutorials are probably amongst the best on you tube.
The time you take to explain it, and the way you play are amazing.
The world needs more people like you.
Thanks :)
Years later and you still have beginners like me show up and learn from your teaching. Thank you kindly, Sir.
Always happy to see old videos still going strong!
The way you teach is amazing. I have tried to learn the piano multiple times in the past but always given up too quickly. This is the first piece I have managed to learn fully (well, I still sound terrible but that will improve). I am going to check out all your basic lessons and this time stick to learning for good.
Thanks!
sanket baxi Thanks Sanket! I wish you all the best in trying to learn piano. It's not easy but it is also very rewarding and can be lots of fun. Just take things slowly and keep at it and you will improve!
Thank you so much! I was in desperate need for a suitable piece for my music exam in a couple of days and you've saved me! You're also an amazing player: keep it up!
Excellent tutorial...great teaching....Thank you Sir for creating this tutorial.
sameer k You are very welcome, Sameer.
+MangoldProject I can imagine you saying that....
Thank you so much for this tutorial. I learned so much.. This is my first piano piece i fully learned 😊
+Astral Underpass Wow I'm happy my tutorial helped you learn your first piece! Here's to many more to follow.
This is a very well-done video -- well conceived and well executed. Thank you.
I've recently decided to come back to the piano after some 58 years and this is just the right level to ease me into it again. Thanks for a great video.
That's great to hear! I wish you lots of luck & enjoyment getting to know the piano all over again.
Thank you. Happy to help!

Thank you! I am a physical comedian/character actor and I have spent my entire life as a performer. Over the last couple of years, Cirque du Soleil has been talking to me about different roles in several shows. They just contacted me less than a week ago about a new show that they are producing in Florida in conjunction with Disney. The character fits my description exactly, except that he plays the piano. I'm not sure at what level! I really don't play piano, although I do play the accordion a little bit. They asked me to send them a few notes being played on a video by myself, and I learned the first few bars of this particular piece for that reason. It was enough to make me sound at least like I wasn't a complete and total disaster. Thank you! Very cool!
EXCELENT.....THE BEST........ THANK YOU......................!!!!!!!!!!
I actually encourage all guitar players to learn this song as well. It functions as a fantastic arpeggio exercise and helps people to memorize the guitar fretboard. It doesn’t hurt that it’s a lovely piece of music.
Thank you very much for this video. I began piano four years ago at the age of 68. Classical pieces only such as Fur Elise, Chopin Preludes in E Minor and B Minor, Debussy's Clair de Lune and now, with your help, this is my first Bach effort. Wish you would do Malaguena for CZcams. That's my next up. Again, thank you for the great help with this tutorial. You provide easy to follow instructions with the notes on the screen. All the best, Elise
Thank you for this amazing class. This song is a masterpiece.
Really like the way you explain this in terms of Chords, Notes, and the consistency of the fingering pattern. Thank you for the video
thank you for this video, I learned the whole song now from this!! last night I was up till midnight playing it. my hands hurt so badly I had to take ibuprofen😁 thank you I paused it in every single line memorizing it. Finally I can play it!!!!!!
Thank you. I've been learning to play the guitar, and watched a video of this piece arranged for that. I'm also learning piano, and searched for an easy version of this prelude & found you. Thank you! Very clear teaching with your words & with your visuals. You've inspired me.
Thank you so much for this. Tried following the musical notation from James Rhodes' book which is great but found it too hard as a beginner. Having the notes A to G displayed with the fingering is really helpful.
This is better than the top results that were returned when I searched for a tutorial for Prelude in C Major. Glad I dug down. Thanks :)
Thanks dude! This really helped me a lot!
My dear friend. I don't know what to say... it has been a pleasure to learn this song. I had never played a piano before and now I can play this beautiful son (a friend told me ...that's not little song...that's Bach) without thinking... God Bless you... please post more complete songs in this tutorial format... The God of Abraham may bless you.
LOVE the notes above the piano. Don't get me wrong, you teach it really well, but me personally i learn best by seeing the notes as they're being played and the notations above really help me. I've just about got the whole song down!
Thanks, man!
Listening to you play this is delightfully relaxing. I am going to start on this piece in 2 days as I start a new easy classical piece every 4th of the month. (Beginner pianist with a music theory base)
This is a great video that explains and shows everything. Thank you. Do you have a lesson for the next part, prelude and fugue book 2?
Truly wonderful. Especially the fingering since I never had any formal lessons. This is a god sent. Thank you.
Wonderful, thank you for taking the time to share!
Great timing. I'm learning this as my first classical piece since it is so beautiful...and it is Bach.
Can't do better than a good Bach.
I'm going into pharmacy school but now I can focus on this! Thank you so much for teaching me how to play this.
This video is very useful, my 5 years old daughter get her hand on it very fast , she did halfway within half hour , the notes and fingering really helped her ,
The only thing that is missing is the sheet music, the notes on the staff on your notation area at the top of the screen helping to learn to read sheet music. Great job!
great video thank you very helpful
This video of yours is the best. Very well done. I am sure many people will have fun with this to show up or even get inspiration to learn on piano. Awesome video. Thank you
It helped me a lot!
then,I love classical music w/ your tutorial this makes me motivated to learn piano
Your tutorials are very informative and with the fingering too. Please upload more such videos.
I got the sheet music for this, but l can't really read music, just count up the lines 'every good boy deserves fruit' and f,a,c,e, on the top staff, and good boys deserve fruit always/all cows eat grass for the base and work out what the notes are that way. But it's very slow. Then l discovered your video. So glad l found it. You've made it so easy to learn this. I'm getting on at a cracking pace now. Can't wait until l can play it from beginning to end, and as beautifully as you do. Thankyou so much for doing this. Very much appreciated. 💕
thank you
+1000000volts You're welcome.
Thanks a lot for this very accurate tutorial.
Your explanation is very clear , very well done.
I'm looking forward to see other videos of yours.
I had piano lessons as a boy and it is one of the biggest regrets of my life that I did not persist with them to become an accomplished pianist. Seeing and hearing this video inspires me to believe that I may yet be able to master at least piece of music, and a phenomenal piece at that! Thank you!
Sure thing. Look at the bright side: If your biggest regret is not learning piano, then you've done pretty well for yourself in life :)
MangoldProject Yeah I hadn’t thought of that, that’s a good way of looking at it.
@@alantrowbridge4931 l'm same. I had lessons from l was 11 to 13. Was just beginning to do well when l gave it up for whatever reason. Can't remember why. BIG mistake! I'm 66 now and it's so hard to re-learn. You definitely pick it up much, much more quickly when young. Hope you have learned to play this anyway, (l'm working on it), it's fairly easy. Keeps the old grey matter active too. 😄
This is great! And thank you for providing a sheet music with your tutorial.
Almost 10 years later and it`s still de easyest way to learn how to play this beautiful piece on youtube. Thanks buddy!
Thanks Rodrigo. I appreciate your kind words.
Great video, good technique and explanation. Also the links below are very useful.
Thank you!
Have been learning playing piano for more than a year! Thanks for your sharing and teaching! Prelude always be my amazed piece to practise. Thanks again for your basic managing of fingers to handle those loving chords.
Hi Sung! You're very welcome. Always happy to hear a video helped someone out. Keep practicing!
Thanks and appreciated your feedback
You are an amazing teacher. In addition, your very generous with your time. Thank you.
Very well explained and easy to follow with fingers and notes written on the screen, thank you!!
Superb piano lesson! Thank you!
I have the sheet music for Prelude in C. It does look a bit tricky with the timing, as I am new to piano music reading, coming from Violin and classical guitar. I wish there was an easy way to interpret the rhythm to this beautiful piece. I found another piece I have been playing *Green Sleeves* thou I am not happy how someone has put other words into it. Its also very lovely with the base hand and then right hand echoing it. I love this kind of music.
Thank you so much!! You've helped my play this
Can't wait to learn this! I've only been learning piano a couple of months. I don't have a teacher, so I have to go off of tutorials. This looks very fun to play even though it looks WAY harder than the stuff I already know. Either way, can't wait to sit down for hours and get mad at my fingers for not doing what I want them to!!!
i bought a piano few days ago
thanks a lot for your videos you ll make me win a precious time !
great job
Before I try I watch the whole video first and on a none serious note
Right hand
DAD
I found that entertaining
same lol
I just learned this as my first piece and can play it well. Now im checking this video to see if I could have learned it easier 😅
Great piece of art
Excelente !!!, derecho para la practica que recomendaste en la otra lección, Assaf, eres un grande en todo aspecto !!!!, como siempre muchisimas gracias!!!, abrazo
Thanks Guillermo!
Thank you very much for this! Fantastic tutorial
The notes on the top are really helpful
LOVE YOUR WORK!! You are my go to instructor - esp for the great genre of jazz.
Best tutorial of this song ever!!!
Glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you. Took me a month of 30 mins a day practice but it was worth it. My friends thought it was a complex piece at first, I still need more polishing though.
Great tutorial. Thank you so much.
Thank you very much for your time and sharing. Very very commendable.
Thank you, great tutorial which helped me to learn this piece!
Thank you so much !!! This is one of my favorite song!!! You're amazing! ❤️
Excellent tutorial! thanks dude!
Awesome thanks. Have been playing this for a while, but didn't know about the GEb BCEb, sounds even better now 🙏
i love how you play the piano
Thank you very well presented
Wow..its so easy to learn,
By seeing Hands, notes, finger nos. & chords Displayed while you played, was very useful.
Thanks you very much.
Pls continue to do more.
Thank you so much for your work!
I really enjoy your videos and have learned a lot from them. One observation though: the next to last bar in the music sheets I found has the left hand playing C B instead of C C. So it should be LH: C B RH: G B D F etc.
Thank you for taking the tone for us!
You're so kind and good. Thank you.
Wonderful I started to practice it
Thank you for your teaching
Farhang from Sweden .
Very informative and helpful. Thank you.
Awesome lesson! thanks for sharing this!
Thanks alot for this.
and by the way, i think theres a little error there, in 2:40. im not familier with notes but from hearing other versions its seems they played one less "note" in the pattern.
Great! :)
Thank you very much. I learnt a quarter of it just from this video. I will have to delay Handel's saraband for this. I am trying to make a come back after 26 years! Practice make perfect as you say.
That's great! 26 years sounds like a long time, but I think that some aspects are ingrained in our minds and cannot be erased even after a long period, just like riding a bike. It's just a question of getting back into shape.
FANTASTIC PREACHER, U R SIR, ITS SO PLEASANT TO LEARN EACH LESSON FROM YOU
Very nice and easy to follow, Thank you very much.
Thanks for posting. great to be reminded how to play and re learn
many thanks
