Fun fact: almost no one in this country knows the lyrics.
We have no national pride.
Another fun fact: French people looked down on the Wallons so they started replacing counting words like 'septante' and 'nonnante' instead of their 'soixante-dix' and 'quatre-vingt-dix'.
So in Belgium, when French people are trying to be dicks, we say: "En Belgique, on calcule avant dire le numéro" which translates to: 'In Belgium we calculate the numbers before saying them' which is a diss because the French numbers translate to: sixty-ten and four-twenty-ten.
More fun facts: one of the prime ministers once hummed 'Le marseille' when asked for the national anthem.
EVEN MORE fun facts: French used to be the only language, but people in Flanders were still speaking Flemish (variant of Dutch). So they revolted (I think in the 1970s), demanding for Dutch to be recognized and spoken in schools. So they made Dutch and German (there is a little small part that speaks a belgian variant of German) official languages too, and creating regions (Vlaams, Brussels, Waals) and communities (Vlaams, french speaking, German speaking).
Because of this, our governmental system is very complicated; we have a federal, 2 regional and 3 community governments (the Flemish is overlapping). We have begun defederalizing a lot of things causing a devide, which is why we hold the record for 'country to have the longest time without a national government' for we cannot see eye-to-eye.
It's ironic because our slogan is l'union fait la force, eendracht maakt macht which translates to 'The unity makes the power', and the unity is what we lack.
Other fun facts: Van Rossem, a person who had a political party and was know to be a bit shady, yelled at the inauguration of the, then new, king Albert: VIVA LA REPUBLIQUE!!!!
He had to go to jail, but only for a day or so, because he got elected.
So now you know more about Belgium, the land of dialects !
